  • Psychosomatic or functional conditions are when people have symptoms that are not currently explainable by an organic disease. Major examples are fibromyalgia and myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME). These conditions which can have very severe and debilitating symptoms have no known organic basis, i.e. at present we cannot find anything wrong with the tissues of the body that would explain the individuals having these symptoms. One of the current leading theories for these conditions is that the symptoms arise within the brain rather than from peripheral tissues. This is called the psychosomatic theory and due to its popularity the conditions are often called psychosomatic conditions. This theory is not proven and it will be interesting to see in the future whether it continues to be supported or whether it is dropped.

Anxiety and depression can sometimes be disorders of the brain, but in most cases they're psychological.
