  • 4K Live webcam feed from the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale Marine Sanctuary off the island of Maui. The Sanctuary, which spans all the way to the mysterious island of Molokai and Lanai in the distance, is the birthing and mating grounds of the North Pacific Humpback Whale population. They can be seen breaching, fin, and tail slapping in large numbers here from December to April. This live feed rotates from the north (tiny Mokuho'Oniki Island and Kahana, Maui), west (Island of Molokai) to the south (Island of Lanai).
    Just in front is the Kahekili Marine Reserve - one of only three conservation zones on Maui and a popular spot for watching green sea turtles feed on seaweed. Spot the occasional pod of dolphins or a rare sighting of the critically endangered Hawaiian Monk Seal. Morning rainbows are common and the sunsets in the evening are spectacular. To ensure the privacy of guests staying at Maui Sands 4B, the sound from the webcam is not live but was prerecorded from this exact spot earlier.
    This is the exact view that guests of Maui Sands Unit 4B experience right from the ground floor lanai. Unit 4B is a carbon-neutral, eco-friendly, and fully-equipped condo. Maui Sands is one of the original condo resorts in all of West Maui and it has retained a lot of the old Hawaii vintage feel of the '60s before the hotel boom. If you would like to experience this view in person, visit www.mauisands.com to find out more.
    The researchers at the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale Marine Sanctuary at NOAA have asked for your help in spotting Humpback Whales. Specifically, they want our viewers to report anything unusual with the Humpbacks such as vessel strikes, entanglements, etc. If you spot a humpback and more importantly see one in distress, please make note of the day and time (time on the bottom left of the video) and email the details to whalesighting@mauisands.com. We will forward your report right away to the Maui Island coordinator at NOAA.
    If you spot any other marine creatures such as Hawaiian Monk Seals, Spinner Dolphins, or Sea Turtles (Green or Hawksbill) you are encouraged to report it in the live chat.

    Ummmmm humpbacks tail slap all the time. I’ve watched one do this in Maui for a good 15 minutes with no humans anywhere around . I’ve watched this same behavior off the coast here in Ca for hours right from the shore ! I was lucky enough to be on the Pacifica pier a few years back when a mama humpback swam right next to the pier ( so close I could see her eye !) along with her calf next to her 😊. It seemed like she wanted to show off her baby because she circled round the pier with baby in tow three times and everytime they’d swim past us the crowd that had gathered would cheer in delight !!
    Such a beautiful experience .

      I was going to say the same thing… I feel like mama wanted to show her baby off here. Also, everybody throwing in their critiques - they don’t know the whole story. Those people may have been out kayaking, and paddle boarding and the whale may have just appeared out of nowhere. It’s not like they were chasing her! I can’t tell from the frame of the video, but it looks like they moved out of the way to give her plenty of room once they figured out she was there. Anyway, I agree with you. This looks to me like a joyful display. I understand we need to respect wildlife and not encroach, but so many people on here deem themselves “experts” without all the facts 😉

    These people are too close. The mom Hump Back Whale 🐋 probably was upset these people were this close to her baby. It is against the law to be that close. Those people could have been killed by that whale 🐋 mom's tail. Great capture of the whales. Thank you for sharing.

    Mahalo for posting this segment so we can save it and share it with others. We watched it live and had the same feelings as noted by others; this is absolutely beautiful and amazing, at the same time, these people who are out there with the whales are too close! They could get hurt by momma’s huge tail…and it’s illegal to be that close. Maui was our happy place (before the Lāhainā fires) for many reasons but seeing whales will always be number one for us. I Love Whales!!! Respect their space and keep them safe. 🙌🏼❤️✨❤️✨❤️✨❤️✨❤️✨❤️✨❤️

    Yes. You would not have to tell me twice that I'm in the wrong place with my little personnel paddle boat or paddle board. I'm out of hear. I know these creatures can seem to appear out of nowhere. I've been out fishing and a Pilot Whale came up and had a look at us in my little 14' boat. It's an eerie feeling it didn't seem concerned that we were there. We just kept on course and made no sudden moves. By coming up to have a look at us. I mean we could have easily reached out with a paddle and touched it. However, we are also aware that provoking wild creatures could be at your apparel. All I can say please respect all wild creatures' personal space. It's one thing when they come close to you. But it's a completely different thing to barge in on them. Please keep your distance when dealing with wild creatures

      Tail slapping does not mean stay away. Humpbacks literally do this behavior all the time. I live in Hawaii and have witnessed tail slapping and fin slapping hundreds of times. If anything, it’s playful and joyful behavior.

      I love watching whales! What amazing joy, power & wisdom! While I don’t know whale behavior…. I do know they are our relatives, our ancestors; magnificent beings who should be treated with respect. We are encroaching on their “land”, the sea, every time we go into the ocean. It is illegal & unsafe to come close to whales. We need to keep our distance. (And definitely not be trying as get as close as possible to earn $$$. That not only disrespects the whales; it also dishonors the Native Hawaiians & the Locals. It dishonors Hawai’i. EMBODY ALOHA. Na’au.

    • @pbelle6263
      @pbelle6263 2 місяці тому +6

      Hmmmm. Think you’re jumping to conclusions. The mama whale seemed like she just wanted to show off her baby a bit, and the tail slapping may been a combination of a warning to keep a respectful distance while also showing off her baby. I’ve watched many many many many videos where humans encounter humpbacks in the ocean - scuba divers, kayakers. It is amazing how gentle the whales are around the human when they could easily kill one in a moment’s breath. But I have never seen a whale act aggressively towards a human being in any of the videos I’ve been privileged to watch! If anything, they seem astoundingly aware of how small and fragile we are compared to themselves, while also displaying a beautiful curiosity towards us. Of course, we should respect them, not disputing that. But it seems like everyone is a harsh critic and “expert” these days!

This humpback mom could have taken these ignorant people out with one breach, or well placed tail slap, yet SHE was being respectful of THEIR space...it's sad to see they couldn't return the courtesy! And, humans are supposed to be the more "intelligent" species?!?...hmm🤔(obviously I'm not referring to all humans, but it's clear there are still far too many who think the laws/rules don't apply to them!🤦🏻‍♀️)
