RIP, Dan. He passed away yesterday, June 24, 2018. I was a devoted WCBS 101.1 FM listener when I was in my teens in the early 1990s. Thank you for introducing me to 1950s-60s music.
Dan Ingram was no doubt one of the greatest DJ's and influences (humor wise) in my young life. Listening to him again just opens the flood gates of memories but please be assured I needed no reminders of how great he was. An icon of my musical life-cheers to you Dan.
I had the great fortune of sitting in with Dan Ingram at WABC on a rainy Saturday in February of 1972 ("when I was 17, it was a very good year") It was a life-changing experience! Dan taped the microphone of my Hitachi cassette recorder to his on-air mic and let me record everything he said on and off the air for about 90 minutes. I still have that recording, now on a CD. Dan was and continues to be a huge source of inspiration for my on-air work, which began in 1971. How can I ever thank you adequately, Dan?
"It's our eighth year.....I wonder how long it will last?" Said Dan. Well Dan, it lasted another 13 years, 10 months and 6 days. (May 10th, 1982, when you and Ron Lundy played the last regularly scheduled music on WABC.). And you had some more happy years after that on WCBS-FM 101 and I thank you for it all!!!
Before “uploads” CDs, cassettes, etc, there was AM radio, being a 10 year old with a transistor radio in 1975 as a kid in NY was a treat listening to “Big Dan”
Dan was one of those D.J.'s who evoked gut-level laughter. What a radio giant back in the day. "Run Around Sioux": just one of a million laugh out loud gems from Dan.
The memories. He was an amazing talent, he was so unbelievably quick. I have a friend who sent a T&R to Scott Shannon, who interviewed him personally, couple of decades ago. He told him, you're good, you're really good, but here, it requires a smoothness that very few have. Please don't take it personally. Dan Ingram was totally Hall Of Fame with his presentation, so few do have what he had, and the ability to put it out there every afternoon. I miss Dan Ingram. Very much.
Dan Ingram is the kimo sabe of my music listening days starting when I was around six or seven years old 1963-1964 and ever since then he has made me laugh with his jokes and his humor and it's because of him I now have deep appreciation for all the great music he played on his show and most all of the great music sits in my CD collection as a tribute to a great DJ and happier times for being a kid
I never have lived in New York, but I understand that WABC was a great top 40 AM radio station. All the songs featured in this video, Dan Ingram from July 4th 1968 that I have grew up with when I was listening to radio station WLS AM 89 in Chicago.
I grew up with WABC in New York, but moved to Texas in 1968. At night, and especially in a car, we could pick up WLS Chicago. It took some of the sting out, but I couldn't tell you one DJ's name. I could tell you all of them from 77WABC.
I met dan 4 times.i used to tell him inperson-that I was his biggest fan of all time for a billion technical and emotional reasons.i was lucky enuf to be a music RADIO broadcast instructor during his fantastic years at wabc .so I taught my students the Ingram techniques of verbal and technical hosting.(I was also one of the very few people in on this planet-to be in my car...and heard him live...when he mutters the now famous words after Anwar Saddam was killed...when Ingram said...this shit has got to stop.( I knew at that very moment-Not only was I listening to the GREAT TOP 40 MUSIC RADIO BROADCASTER OF ALL TIME...but I knew......how fantastically complex of a human Ingram was...BECAUSE in all of two sentences he managed...to sound apologetic to the audience for saying shit has to end...and simultaneously..he was emotionally stern that THAT HAD TO BE SAID.wow.(Yes Ingram was so talented...BECAUSE he was God of broadcasting in all categories.(I used to take college tours of the wabc RADIO days when he broadcasted...he was so fast that you could never see him giving the engineer the cue finger.(your replies are welcomed at: meetup8@aol.com)
And another great thing about Dan among many others was he wasn't above working on the holidays. These self-proclaimed kings of media today would never do such a thing. Yeah, in later years he didn't, but he deserved not to. He really was the best & not nearly enough is said or written about his dominance as the #1 jock on the #1 station from the Beatles early days until the disco age.
Oh, yeah. I listened daily from the dunes at Fenway Beach in Weekapaug. Grew up in NJ listening to Dan and all the All Americans. No other radio station in the US could match WABC, esp during the “summer music power” years ‘67-69.
@@patriciagullickson9591 Their signal was MUCH stronger in the 60's in that direction anyway. Antenna system must be degrading over the years or they changed their directional pattern.
UA-cam great job with your videos thanks a lot for all the great memories we are part of Jeffrey's New Jersey radio w m e m he's away in the Poconos so we're taking over but from our station to you happy holidays at a great New Year I keep up the good work with your great videos Thanks for the Memories

There are ways to fix your muddy audio. There are phase shift devices that bring back the highs. If this is on a cassette, take a jewelers screwdriver and attempt to get the playback head into alignment.
This is an amazing artifact. Everything they advertise is something that kills you or kills the earth (other than "Gorilla Milk"). And that is a crazy news bulletin near the end! Love the music and the DJ is great.
Sorry to bust your little bubble and doing a spot check on this show. I did not hear any Motown songs. No big deal though. we have plenty of our own Station.. Nice Isn't it.....
Dan Ingram was the greatest voice in top 40 radio.

Dan Ingram and my (teal blue) transistor radio were my constant companions in the 1960s.
Such was my life as an only, lonely child
I grew up listening to The Ingram Mess on WABC and CBSfm. RIP Big Dan Ingram

The most creative jock ever in New York Radio DAN INGRAM on WABC
Dan was one of those D.J.'s who evoked gut-level laughter. What a radio giant back in the day. "Run Around Sioux": just one of a million laugh out loud gems from Dan.
Dan Ingram, Ron Lundy Harry Harrison, Bruce Morrow and Chuck Leonard made AM and FM radio 📻 from the 60s until 2004 awesome.
The best top 40 dj ever to hit the radio. We'll miss ya, Keemo-Sabe.
Jack Specter was pretty good too

R.I.P. Dan.You were the BEST.
RIP Dan Ingram. I was probably listening the day this one aired. You can hear newsman Bob Hardt trying very hard not to laugh.
America was such a better place back then.
Agree but that s because we were such better people back then
It was. And people were much more intelligent then. But the Vietnam draft wasn't fun.
Yes and so much more was the radio and TV broadcasting. They still had professional standards back than.
Great radio back then , Jersey Boy here.
Dan passed. As did the last remnants of my childhood:(
RIP Dan. The best there ever was.
God speed Sir may you Rest in peace. Thanks for the Memories.
Wow, Lenny, Being a native of Queens, this really brings back some nostalgic memories. Thanks.
Great memories - thank you for being a part of my youth
My favorite DJ on WABC
man fifty years later i listen and i think. wow. they played a LOT of commercials, you don't get many songs before more commercials!!
One of my favorite DJs.
back when radio was great! summer in the 60s with 1010 wins, wmca good guys and wabc!
wish i had been alive and in ny to listen to wabc in its heyday with dan harry and the rest. nice little time trip!
Thanks for putting this on the web. It's a great history lesson.
I think FM was around but nobody listened to it back then!
Dennis Lyons didn't have fm radio in a car until after 73, and also a portable am/fm radio around the same time. WPLJ & WNEW ruled then.
When radio was actually listenable.

6:47 This Guy's in Love with You by Herb Albert, number 1 song Summer 1968.
Great aircheck. Sounds so familiar.
Dan really knew how to inject personality in that BossAM radio format. Kept the music playing, but you knew who was playing it!

Who cares, anyway?
Oh yes they did.....The Porcupine Love Song...I Can’t Get Next To You by The Temptations.
