Carson Graham "mi mi mi mi dani I have a question" literally the entire cast. Lmao she knows everything there is to know. I, still trying to figure out how she knew benny and Nina slept together
I fucking cry every time. This is one of my favourite songs in the whole musical cause it encapsulates the feeling of changing immigrant culture today so exactly. It's like this perfect snapshot. It's so fucking bittersweet, when you realise/witness the celebration that is just a total release of pent up emotions, and everyone is giving it all for that one last night, yet it's punctuated by Vanessa and freakin' SONNY who both don't really know how to feel, who don't want to let it all go and who want to leave so bad... the line "We are powerless, we are powerless" is just so... powerful. And when Usnavi sings his solo bit "maybe we're powerless, a corner full of foreigners" and "can we sing so loud and raucous they can hear us across the bridge in East Secaucus" just hits me so hard because that just encapsulates it all so well. The feeling of diaspora, of not knowing where you belong, of being estranged in a corner of a country that you will never fully integrate into, and the dying of what culture you do have/have managed to hold on to. That burning feeling of being powerless, yet refusing to let it die. Fucking amazing.
And if you watched the movie they changed the lyrics that made me sad because when Carla and daniella said “everything changes today…usnavi leaveing today..off to a better place” and when Benny said “ everything changes today..goodbye mr.Rosario…im taking over the barrio” then Carla and Dani said “we’re leaving the barrio”
i love how the girls in the back hug when usnavi says "maybe this is our last night together" it mustve been so hard know this was their last night together.
No lie, this is the show that made be want to be proud and become more a part of my Cuban heritage. I didn't realize what it meant to be hispanic until this show and I became very proud! LA BANDERA CUBANA!
This has got to be the only live concert/performance where I find the people singing along to the songs endearing instead of annoying. Like, you can hear it in the video. Every single lyric? The people know it. Where to come in, where to laugh, where to sing loudly, shout, or answer back... it's awesome and precious. This show has truly touched many.
I cannot even with the perfectness of this cast. They seriously look like they are having the time of their life an would love to be up there with them!
Can I admit that it is going to take every last ounce of my self-control not to bring a giant Dominican flag to wave during the song when the movie comes out I'm also going to have to control myself not to bring my Dominican fur ball Cujo with me honestly he's the best souvenir I ever brought home and that is including bringing home bottles of Dominican rum LOL XD
Cathy A find you the right people, and you good. Rep your city proud! Let that flag fly! If others don’t like it? Give them the F you! Sneak that fur ball in.
You should go watch it with your flag embracing you over your shoulders 🇩🇴 (Although I suppose we're all gonna have to wait a little more for that to happen)
i cant help smiling during this whole song and performance, lin crafted such amazing music and the actors brought it to life and i just love it so much
This may be a stretch, but you know how there's the little reprise bit before Atencion, and the last phrase they sing is 'la bandera Cubana'? Well I'm pretty sure that Abuela Claudia is from Cuba (she says so in Pacienca y Fe), so suddenly that last line becomes all foreshadowy :(
that’s exactly it!!! also, the last lines of the song (not the reprise) are “alza la bandera...” and so on, and they get through DR, PR, and Mexico, and then don’t finish and say Cuba. because the lady from Cuba just died!! more foreshadowing for ya
Nala Hodjat yeah like a 4th cuban. abyeta claudia was 1) full cuban and 2) one of the most important and loved people on the block. just accept the symbolism lmao
I can`t stop watching the "We all know that he loooooves you!", "Haven`t you notice you get all your coffee for free!" and "I heard you and Nina went for a roll in the hay!" parts. I love the way Andrea delivered those lines. And I love Carla`s voice in "Look at Vanessa`s face!"
Wow this brings back memories, I flew over from Scotland to be at this, the atmosphere in the theatre was the most amazing ever. The ultimate party ,everyone had a ball
Carla is too cute for this world Dani is very dramatic Sonny cares so much for others and wants to be a great friend and be their for Pete Pete just wants to help people with his art and be the best friend he can be for Sonny Piragua just wants his business to go well These are my favorite characters and they are just as important as the other characters.
Maybe you’re right, Sonny, call in the coroners! Maybe we’re powerless, a corner full of foreigners Maybe this neighborhood’s changing forever Maybe tonight is our last night together, however! How do you want to face it? Do you wanna waste it, when the end is so close you can taste it? Y’all could cry with your head in the sand I’m a fly this flag that I got in my hand!
andrea and janet have the sweetest and lovely chemistry together. my two favs of the musical. andrea outstanding for this number. Remarkable musical, knew it and saw it twice almost 12 years ago. saw it once with lin and other with javier.
My favourite song in the musical. One of the best group musical numbers in Musical Theatre History. it's right up there with Tonight Quintet, Masquerade, La Vie Boheme and One Day More, for me at least.
This show is so amazing! I'm playing Sonny in my high school's production of In The Heights and it's our closing weekend. This is the best musical of the decade!
I'm watching this while in vaction in the Dominican republic and I saw the musical the night before ifl left for here I have never felt so much pride in being Domican as felt while watching this :D
I cannot WAIT to see this scene in the movie, it's gonna have me feeling so many feels!! (I also really like the little transition into Atencion at the end)
I love how Lin just randomly pulls out flags from his back pocket and also her voice sounds so good, and also Lin’s face at the beginning 00:13 and onward when she is singing makes me happy, and Karla as a character is adorable
Do you realize that Usnavi was going to leave Sonny, who is 16 and Usnavi is his legal guardian. And he thinks that money is going to help. What would have happened to Sonny, would he have gone to live with Dani and Carla or Pete. Or would he be taken by social services? I feel so bad for my bby Sonny his only family (I think) was leaving him.
I love how enthusuastic everyone is in this performance, especially Daniela, I mean they all sound almost exactly like the recording, dare I say better.
Thanks for sharing this! I didn't know about In the Heights when it was on Broadway and won the Tonys! Ever since the movie came out, I really wanted to get a feel for the original Broadway production.
I though the movie cast did really well. Plus, in terms of original cast members that appeared in the movie, Lin was piragüero, Chris Jackson was the Mr. Softee man, Olga Merdiz reprised her role as Abuela Claudia, Seth Stewart (Graffiti Pete) was the bartender in The Club scene, and the late, great Doreen Montalvo was one of Nina's neighbors in "Breathe." Janet Decal (Carla) made a voice cameo in the title song saying "I've never been north of 96th street," and Javier Muñoz made a voice cameo in "The Club" as the guy asking Vanessa to dance. Priscilla Lopez made a cameo as Camila, albeit only in pictures since she isn't alive in the film.
In the heights doesn’t even show Honduran culture and I’m not from New York but I’ve never felt more represented in a musical and movie than I do with this movie.
I feel like Peggy and Piragua guy have the same purpose, they're both very small roles yet everyone loves them
Ryan Fleur But Piragua guy actually gets a song.

I thought it was so funny when she said "Ask Me Why" everyone was like WHY!?

everyone else: DANI
True, so true
Carson Graham "mi mi mi mi dani I have a question" literally the entire cast. Lmao she knows everything there is to know. I, still trying to figure out how she knew benny and Nina slept together
Me: SONNY

me: CARLA
Mandy looks like a lost child sitting politely in her chair omg I love her
she's adorable
True. Also she is so cute!!
Same though
JUST ADORABLE
Mandy: 4:39
"Went for a roll in the hay HAY!" is my favorite part. Benny looks so mortified
Elizabeth Kim So much PAIN
He is slowly dying inside

That's why the opening number gives me chills. "In the Heights, I hang my flag up on display. It reminds me that I came from miles away".
Averyl Fong This is the best comment I have ever seen on UA-cam.

It made me sad when they didn’t put it in the movie because it’s my favorite lines of the musical
When the time comes, they really need to do a reunion for Hamilton and bring everyone from the original cast back.

Marlena B And I'll pay a million dollars to come see it

Lin might be the only person I know that keeps a whole full sized flag in his pocket.
