I had the same problem. Found this video. It was exactly on point. Solved the problem immediately. Very grateful! Saved me $ taking it to a garage where who knows what they would say the problem was to justify the cost. 😊
Thank you so much for this video. I had exactly the same problem and even noticed that the screw was loose but did not realize it made such a difference. I thought that maybe the top of the ball capture assembly had broken off and it was letting the ball escape. I was researching the cost of a new assembly ($275) when I did another UA-cam search and ran across you video. I went out and tighten the screw and to my amazement it worked. Add blue lock-tight as well. I love the fact that UA-cam and people like yourself take the time to do these. Thanks
Had that problem for years. Finally figured out it was the screw. There’s no straight angle to tighten the screw due to the sheet metal. Bit of advice, drill a dime size hole in the sheet metal to allow a straight line to the screw to avoid stripping the screw head. Also, use an impact driver. Cheers.
@@Brock_Fitness shoot, I’ve never taken the screw completely out for fear of it dropping into the door cavity. You might be able to locate it with an extended magnetic. My guess, it’s a .75-1” Phillips screw. Maybe a door schematic online will show the actual part number. Best of luck!
I put a hole in the sheet metal the second time I had to tighten it up, but it kept coming loose every year or so, and eventually I just put a hole right through the trim so I could tighten it in seconds with a screwdriver without taking anything else apart. Depends how worried you are about appearance... Last week we had a big ice storm that froze the door shut, and my wife broke the handle altogether trying to brute force it open. To my surprise, I could get an OEM handle for ~$60 online (the dealer wanted $85), and it was a really easy replacement. Having gotten entirely too familiar with this little screw, I removed the screw and added blue thread lock before I put the new handle assembly in. Hopefully at this point the handle lasts longer than the rest of the van.
Thanks, I have the same problem. I'm going to drill through the panel to get the screwdriver in there to tighten up the screw, instead of taking off the panels.
I’ve been tightening that little screw for 2 years now! I ended up drlling a hole thought the sheet metal so I can get the screwdriver square to the screw. Never loosened again!
Thank you for the video! I had the same problem. I drilled a little hole directly out from the screw so I could get a good angle on the screw. Worked great.I agree theses plastic tabs are a horrible system.
@@ford-fix Thought I would share with you that in my case the problem was the plastic clip that holds the bottom of the push up rod to the handle action was broken. I bought one in a pack from Autozone for $5, but your video was still extremely valuable to helping me get it opened and reassembled.
@@johnkullman9282 Glad you got it to work! I sure wish they wouldn’t use plastic parts, they fail and crack over time. Thanks for the feedback! -Robert
So needed this. Now my interior handle no longer works either. Had whole handle replaced and it failed in less than 2 months after cross country drive. It’s one of worst old Ford design flaws. Luckily I removed most interior covering in my V10 Club Wagon but still that screw takes a lot to get to which is labor charged if you went to a shop. I’ve had several mechanics flat out not even try n refer me to body shops. Stay tuned…. Let’s see if my screw is even there still. LoL. Thx for great support, simple video
You can access the damm screw without removing the bottom panel completly. Unscrew the upper left hand screw of the bottom panel and lift the Panel up clear of the plastic hooks and bend the front of the panel to get acesss to that screw. Thanks for this video.
Anyone know where the wires run into the van from the sliding door? The speaker in the sliding door used to work then stopped. So I when I replaced the new one didn't work either.
About a year after this fix, the latch went out again. I thought it was the screw again. However, when I opened the panel, the screw was still in place. Ended up that several plastic pieces of the latch assembly finally broke - after 23 years! I replaced the latch assembly and all is good once again.

This is the 4th time I've done this. I swear next time I'll use some lock tite.
Cool, you should make and sell a template where to drill the door and a rubber plug for the hole to reach in with a screwdriver.

Boom, 300 dollars saved
If you drill a 1/4 inch hole in the interior panel where you need to access the screw you can tighten it properly.
What’s the size and length of that screw? I dropped mine
thats the exact issue mine has on the 2006 e250
I need help with the INSIDE handle NOT working! Lol! I can’t find it anywhere on UA-cam!
What would be the issue if both handles don’t open ? I removed the cover and was able to open the door by pushing a lever inside the mechanism.
No sure, sorry!
Anyone know where the wires run into the van from the sliding door? The speaker in the sliding door used to work then stopped. So I when I replaced the new one didn't work either.
I am going to attempt this today on our bands e350. Im gonna laugh if its just a screw
Should use red lock-tite instead of blue. Red is more of a permanent type than the blue.

I am completely missing the latch assembly where that rod with the ball is supposed to go into. Any idea where i can get the assembly?
