I don't have a source but I remember reading somewhere a long ago that one of the reasons why they have yet to make a new game is because Spike Chunsoft couldn't think of a good story
The reason they haven't done a new game is because the last couple of ORIGINAL games to the series (not the Switch remake of Red and Blue Team) were not received well enough to warrant a whole new story, hence why they remade the OG MD for Switch. However, according to the Tera Leak there IS something coming down the pipeline for this series and despite the absolute silence from Game Freak.. Nah, that's exactly why I believe those few bits of leaked info were true.
In hinsight PMD is probably luckier than most Pokemon spin offs. Rangers and Orre games are almost certainly done for, while PMD got a four games AND a remake
This and the Shadow Pokemon games Colosseum and XD were the best spin off games. While people would say Pokemon Ranger was also good, that series died off in the DS era much like the Shadow games died during the GameCube era. Believe me people were displeased when Revolution came out for the Wii when it was just back to Stadium, but I think worse. Even add more salt to the wound when Pokken came out and introduced Shadow Mewtwo with a Mega Evolution. I kept praying for another game to follow up after XD but it looks like it won’t be making a comeback. Mystery Dungeon I thought died off during the 3DS era until I saw the release of the remake for the Switch. I thought the series was making a comeback but we haven’t heard word of anything in development for this series for something new since. It’s sad because it enjoyed this game as it does give you a bit of D&D meets Pokemon feel if you look at it.
I fully agree that an Explorers Remake will soon get released in 2025 or early 2026, as it fits perfectly into the 5 year time interval between modern PMD games (PSMD got released in 2015, while Rescue Team DX got announced in 2020). Also Mega Evolution are a thing again thanks to Legends ZA and are most likely also returning in Gen 10, and Megas are the one gimmick that returned in Rescue Team DX, so Mega Evolutions would most certainly be a feature in a remake of Explorers as well for reasons of consistency alone. If Megas return, we will get all the Megas from Gen 1-4 and perhaps we some new Megas as well (if new forms get added in Legends ZA). Finally in Gen 8-9 especially, some evolutions from earlier Gen Mons were released (e.g. Ursaluna, Farigiraf and Annihilape), so that translates to even more potential content.
But the same team that makes pokemon mystery dungeon just got done makeing shiren the wanderer 6 in 2024, 1 years of development time seems a bit low even for a remake, a new mystery dungeon is unlikley until 2026 and probably more like 2027 or 2028.
@@KeinNiemand I don't think it will take all the way to 2028 for an Explorers remake (and specifically a remake on the Switch or Switch 2) to get released, as well over 75% of all the Pokémon models up until Gen 4 have already been implemented on the Switch system thanks to Rescue team DX and basically the entire story of the Explorers games and most of the necessary dialogue already exists and can easily be re-used in the remake. The situation is different compared to Shiren the Wanderer 6, which needed to be developed right from the very beginning. Also I believe Spike Chunsoft already did some preparations for another Switch PMD game in the background, they just needed to wait for the right moment until Mega Evolutions get put back in the games, which is happening this year with Legends ZA. If Spike Chunsoft plans to release a completely new entry of PMD instead of the remake that goes all the way up until Gen 9 or even Gen 10, then I agree that a release between 2026 an 2028 is more likely though.
Thank you for this video because I’ve been wondering if this game is still in the mind of the developers. It’s sad how something so crucial in some people’s child hood gets left behind due to authority rights or money.
Whilst I agree with most of the sentiments about Pokémon mystery dungeon, I think that given that you’ve said Pokémon accounts for over 70% of all mystery dungeon sales, the series is not dead. It’s just the consequence of modern development time’s increasing so releases are more spread out.
I understand why Mystery Dungeon has mainly entered a hiatus but with how much passion the Red/Blue remake has I’d be shocked if we don’t receive a Sky remake on the Switch 2 somewhere in the near future. That game was peak Mystery Dungeon so it would be weird if they don’t bring it to modern hardware.
At this point I’ve submitted to the idea that maybe Super was meant to be the last entry, and I’ve made my peace with it. That being said, in one of their livestreams earlier last year Spike Chunsoft said they’d be open to make a new PMD given the success of their new Shiren the Wanderer, but TPC would have to greenlight the project. Ultimately it would be up to the Pokemon Company as to whether or not we get a new game or another remake, which personally I don’t think is likely.
@ Then say it like this. Don't say it like people are obligated to you to do as you want. Aside, of course, from your point itself being weird. If someone doesn't like to know leaked information - they'll stop reading after the words "in leaked material". No one is here to babysit twenty (actually, more like ten) percent when thirty want to know and fifty (closer to seventy) are indifferent.
One thing to note is that Kadokawa is actively trying to get Sony to buy their shares. Because before Sony stepped in, they were on the verge of a takeover from a Korean company.
There was a 13 years, 1 month gap between Shiren titles, not 15. There were also several spin-off titles and ports in that time. Such as the Shiren the Wanderer pachinko machine, 2 android titles, and Vita, Switch, Steam, and Smarphone ports of Shiren 5.
I love the PMD games, I would be so happy if a new PMD game or a Sky remake release :) I really hope on the Switch 2 we will get more big Pokemon Spinoffs. They are always so much fun ^^
I was convinced we would get an explorers of sky remake for the switch when the 4th gen remakes came out, and then especially after the dx remake, now I’m loosing hope aaaah
I would've loved a remake of explorers of sky,I loved playing it,and I would love to play it if it ever got a remake....I've been loosing hope on a new mystery dungeon game and remake mystery dungeon games....I guess the game company doesn't like us anymore ;-;
No, PMD is far from dead...the fans on DA keep the series alive with stories, tributes, and comics. Even though we may never get another game. The fans will always keep it alive.
It may also depend how much Chunsoft want to work on a Pokemon game. PMD might be the most popular Mystery Dungeon worldwide, but Chunsofts real passion seems to be Shiren which they have a sizable enough if niche fanbase. I wouldn't doubt they would be open to another PMD but I think its important to remember that thats on probably on a low priority list compared to their flagship product.
it's kinda sad how when you think about it. This started on Gen 3 and roughly ended on Gen 6. With the remake of the 1st Mystery Dungeon is basically just OR/AS but with the chance to recruit very few shiny pokemons.
I honestly prefer the MD games than the mainline games. Dx was the only Pokemon game I bought on the Switch Era and its money well spent. If only we could get a Dx Explorers of Sky
Let's not forget that the community is open to create their own stories and games. Sky Temple was the thing that they needed to make PMD rom hacking accessible like the main series. There is also PMDO if you want a different experience with the gameplay and be able to just play a native PC PMD game with an editor to make your own PMD. Not a lot of content was made in PMDO yet but what was done looks promising.
13:58 "I don't expect Astro Bot Mystery Dungeon to be coming anytime soon." Though, as someone who's both a PMD fan and an Astro Bot fan, it would be kinda fire ngl Also, there was a Pokémon Mystery Dungeon trademark that was filed as recently as October 2023 and the registration for it was confirmed in July 2024, so who knows? Maybe there is something in the works.
I really do hope that we get another instalment or at least a remake of explorers this franchise really touched my heart and i want the best for the franchise (or at least another game which i could enjoy)
PMD is alive and kicking my friend. The Pokémon company know that pmd has a huge fandom and acknowledges that we want a new mystery dungeon. It was even featured in a questionnaire for what we’d be interested in seeing over the next years for Pokémon.
People seem to have mixed feelings on the PMD remake. I like the artstyle, and they clearly managed to take advantage of better system (the whole Sky Tower sequence is such an upgrade, GBA/DS would never be able to pull it off). The original games were filled with some... questionable design choices here and there (why does your team disband at the end of every dungeon, why are some recruits way harder to get than they should be, what were they thinking with Uproar Forest), that DX fixed. I suppose that Friend Areas getting reworked into menus is a big downside, but honestly, as someone who put many hours into original, the original Friend Areas were... weirdly executed. If you played casually they were fine, but if you were aiming to truly complete the game, things started to get ugly (I love having to go inside Friend Areas every time I need a HM guy for a dungeon trip cause the team gets disbanded for no reason hahahaha). The real ?????? is Western Cave getting its roster turned into Solar Cave 2.0 for whatever reason (which lead to the Grass-type starter evos slipping through cracks; they're one of the very few Pokemon you can't obtain directly and have to evolve, cause in original they only show up in Western Cave and for some reason they're not in remake's take on Mt. Faraway; the only other ones are some of the new crossgen evos).
I for one would love a new game in the franchise. Super, while many hate on it, has been a wonderful entry in the series and it really increased the scope and scale of the PMD world. Game being set on multiple continents, the Dark Matter storyline (and Bittercold's in Gates) opening possibilities for non-standard Pokémon storytelling and the general charm with a hint of darkness really opened the floodgates for something really interesting coming out of PMD. I would obviously prefer a new game because of this. I know SpikeChunsoft have said on several streams that they don't entirely like the PMD community and that they don't know what to do with PMD storyline, but I am sure they could get over both of those problems pretty easily. Heck if a hackfraud tabletop campaign writer like me could write several campaigns worth of script set in PMD world, then surely someone actually paid to do so could do a million times better job than me. Anyway, imagine a game with even bigger scope than Super? Maybe apply a bit of Ultra Wormhole-esque storyline that was sorta hinted towards with aforementioned non-Pokémon foes of Gates and Super. Maybe add online multiplayer so people can play in a dungeon together or experience the story in a cooperative way? Honestly, imagination is the limit here. And budget, obviously. Heck even a remaster of Explorers of Sky would be pretty good. I know a lot of the PMD community was a bit disappointed when the DX remake was for the first game. It was wonderful but EoS objectively kinda improves on the original in nearly all possible ways. I think the Friend Areas are the only thing the OG has over EoS and as far as I remember they did not make it to the remake anyway. But yeah, good video. Hopefully we will get some kind of announcement soon and if not, at least the series went out with a bang via Super.
“Game freak doesn’t want them to make mystery dungeon to eat into their sales” is one of the dumbest statements I’ve ever heard in my life They do NOT compete lmao.
Super was originally intended to be the final game in the series. While I would like a new, original game to be made, I don't think it's likely, and if PMD ever comes back, it'll likely be another remake. Spike-Chunsoft did say that if the new Shiren sold well, that would give them leverage towards convincing TPC to let them make a new PMD game, and since Shiren 6 sold well, that could be a good sign for PMD's future. At the end of the day, if you want more PMD, there's plenty of things out there that might scratch that itch to pass the time. PMD Rom hacks, PMD Origins with fangames being made with that engine, Star in the Desert (a fangame that combines PMD with combat from the mainline games), and more. Hell, I would actually recommend other Mystery Dungeon games as well. Yes, Shiren is hard, but if you're willing to take on the challenge, you'll find a very fun and satisfying game series.
dead implies it didn't have a finale they advertised very heavily that super mystery dungeon will be the last game. maybe they will make more but the last new game was sold as the last new game
Very in depth video! It's such a shame that the Mystery Dungeon series came to a halt. The remake of Red and Blue Rescue team was nice, but it's not a good sign that Super was their last original story as it was released almost a decade ago, but I try to keep my hopes up. I do miss the graphics and sprites of the first two gens though... Something about it just feels so right, and it's not nostalgia speaking because new ROM hacks are created to this day, which are awesome as well. We can only hope. Keep it up man! :)
I feel like Sony taking over kadokawa shouldn't affect much to Spike Chunsoft, they also made the arena fighter anime games and it would be dumb to only locked in on like one console like Playstation. And I think that Sony just want to control the anime-side of Kadokawa anyway. But what you said about PMD is true though, it will easily outsell the Shiren games, that's literally the easy way to make money. Though the standard of selling games might be different to TPC since they are so used to game selling like 10 millions even for the lowest effort they out in developing the games lol.
I just want Rescue Team DX, and if no future games, could they at least add the new starter Pokemon? I want to run Litten/Sprigatito and Chimchar/Grookey man
Great video, it was intresting to learn about the ownership situation. Personally despite the possible pitfalls I feel this series is far from dead. DX on Switch was "only" 5 years ago, which again was 5 years after super. Heck Snap came back from the grave, and other Nintendo franchises such as Anothe Code and Famicom Detective Club have also been resurrected. Modern game dev takes longer and longer so 5 years is basically what used to be 2/3 years in the past when considering the life of a franchise. If we get to 7+ years then I'd start getting a bit worried, but just due to the way game dev works we can no longer have constant releases only a year or 2 appart.
PMD was perfect as pixel sprite graphics. It's a shame that it moved to 3D and with it lost most of its charm especially since they reused the unexpressive and tiringly overused models of the mainline games
This has nothing to do with the topic of the video but everytime you say enjoy the rest of your day makes me smile because when you upload in my time zone it is moring so it really feels good when you say that and I will enjoy the rest of my day ❤
i feel like the spirit of mystery dungeon lives on in pokemon legends: arceus, and likely the future legends game pokemon game about being isekai'd into a new world, joining a guild, going on missions, having a deep story, a moment of being betrayed and abandoned from the city you called home but then coming back after proving your innocence.. they share a LOT of the same ideas and imo pokemon legends really just feels like the successor to mystery dungeon
This is a video ive been hoping someone would make for a long time. Mystery dungeon just aint hitting the way it used to. And they've taken ages to update the content soace with something fresh.
A new Mystery Dungeon game is the only way I could start liking Pokémon released after Alola. For me the main line is dead and I don't have any interest on it
I started losing interest into Mystery Dungeon when they shifted from pixel art to 3D. Sometimes, the artistic direction of a game changes completely the way you experience it, down to the feel of the gameplay. I had a super hard time having fun in dungeons not in pixel art. Then stories started becoming really lackluster and lazy, like the one with Jirachi (whose personality could just have been Victini from the previous game) etc...
I love the first two(RT & Sky) so much! I always do a playthrough (main+postgame) at least once a year! I just cant like the newer ones though, removing / 5dmg basic attack, pushing (like why?!?), pushing controls, too zoomed in camera, new iq system, no friend areas, an artstyle that makes it hard to differecciate wall/ground tiles, odd changes to missions and more that im probably forgetting. All that combinds to completely ruin the games for me. It's sad too because RTDX's artstyle was the first one where I kinda liked the 3D models. Really wish they could make an awesome comeback, I would love to play more of them, because I only really like mystery dungeon pokemon games, main series and other spinoffs never gave me much enjoyment
"artstyle that makes it hard to differentiate wall/ground tiles" sorry man but that feels like a skill issue. no seriously, go check your eyes at a doctor or something. the only dungeosn where I can see them blend in due to similar visuals are the Water and Ice-themed dungeons.
Super was a celebration of the series and takes 100 hours easily can't imagine getting 1000+ mon without dexit like gates if remade/ported volcaneon would likely be added Rescue had 5 million Explores made over 6 million sales total and rescue dx was seen as a success so explores dx when?
I appreciate this video for actually acknowledging the Shiren the Wanderer franchise. Message to all PMD fans: Play Shiren! They're just as good if not better than PMD! Shiren has japanese folklore/youkai inspirations. It's super fun! Don't sleep on it just because it isn't Pokemon. Support their original work!
Shiren is just more fun to play! PSMD is my personal favorite entry in the PMD series, because it incorporates Shiren's mechanics so nicely. (If only they added pots too...)
Be glad that it ended and they're not dragging the corpse of these games around like they're doing with the mainline ones. The real soul of PMD lies with the fans, the fanart, the fancomics, the fanfiction, that's all anyone should need to keep loving this world, if they cannot do the original 2 games justice, then it's better that they don't try.
As much as I want a new Mystery Dungeon game, I feel like it's probably for the best it leaves on a good impression with the remake rather than have some new company come in and completely tarnish the series with a bad game
I don't have a source but I remember reading somewhere a long ago that one of the reasons why they have yet to make a new game is because Spike Chunsoft couldn't think of a good story
Hahaha right spike can't think of a good story

I hope we get another PMD.
dead implies it didn't have a finale they advertised very heavily that super mystery dungeon will be the last game. maybe they will make more but the last new game was sold as the last new game
No they did not “advertise very heavily that super mystery dungeon will be the last game” lmao what utter nonsense are you on about
I just want this series to be what EoS once was, at this point I don't want more titles, and this comes from someone that stills play EoS to this day.
At this point I think the sales of the remake weren't high enough to potentially bring back interest in this franchise.
PMD is dead in mainstream. However, we the fans have kept it ALIVE & EVOLVING with our endless stories! ~ 😎
I would like a new pmd version to be coop playable, although that is very unlikeley as they would have to implement huge system changes
I feel the same. The remake's background art looks pretty good but the pokemon themselves look kinda bad
This has nothing to do with the topic of the video but everytime you say enjoy the rest of your day makes me smile because when you upload in my time zone it is moring so it really feels good when you say that and I will enjoy the rest of my day ❤
Hope you had a good day
doing campaign for pokemon spin-off?
i feel like the spirit of mystery dungeon lives on in pokemon legends: arceus, and likely the future legends game
pokemon game about being isekai'd into a new world, joining a guild, going on missions, having a deep story, a moment of being betrayed and abandoned from the city you called home but then coming back after proving your innocence..
they share a LOT of the same ideas and imo pokemon legends really just feels like the successor to mystery dungeon
If that's the case, then I'm worried about the future...no offense.
This is a video ive been hoping someone would make for a long time. Mystery dungeon just aint hitting the way it used to. And they've taken ages to update the content soace with something fresh.
A new Mystery Dungeon game is the only way I could start liking Pokémon released after Alola. For me the main line is dead and I don't have any interest on it
I want a new Pokepark more.
You know what else is massive?
Super was a celebration of the series and takes 100 hours easily can't imagine getting 1000+ mon without dexit like gates if remade/ported volcaneon would likely be added
Rescue had 5 million Explores made over 6 million sales total and rescue dx was seen as a success so explores dx when?
If Super ever gets remade in the first place, they should at least add in the starters from gens 7 and onward
Nope because I own the Mystery Dungeon games and can play them on my new Nintendo 3DS XL whenever I want to. 😶
The lack of Shiren players in the comments hurts me 😭
Shiren is just more fun to play! PSMD is my personal favorite entry in the PMD series, because it incorporates Shiren's mechanics so nicely. (If only they added pots too...)
It's over
Be glad that it ended and they're not dragging the corpse of these games around like they're doing with the mainline ones.
PMD lives on by the fan creations.
As a PMD Fan/Rom Hacker
Short Answer: Yes.
More than half of them don't even break 2 million. Worthless and annoying franchise.
