Ahhh my bad. Honestly I literally just got switch online and the pass for the first time and didn't know they were different. Ive been emulating on my laptop and steam deck for several years so I've been out of the switch loop Thank you for clarifying.
Despite being a huge Pokemon fan since it came out, I never played the GBC game. My first time playing this game was about 2 months before the mobile game came out. I had a few Pokemon cards when I was young and never learned how the card game worked either. By the time I finished the GBC card game, I couldn't believe they didn't continue it as a series. It held up surprisingly well for a game more than two decades old.
Dude you nailed it. Pretty much the whole time I played this I was like "man I wish there were as many of these as there were yu gi oh games". thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate you.
A sequel was released for Japan only. Featuring the rocket set cards. It didn't make it here because the GBA came out and they thought translating and releasing a GBC game whilst the new GBA was the in thing wasn't worth the hassle 😢
@@Livvvid It really drives me crazy. Especially how Pokemon TCG Online was this secret thing they never talked about. Then they replaced it with Live, which has NO revenue stream! Why do they hate this product line so much??

Amazing game that definitely still holds up. Played it on the virtual console last year, and the only big bummer is that you can beat it in a day or two. I really with we could get more TCG games that aren't live service...
My coworker the other day showed me his recently downloaded Pocket TCG. I began to tell him about the OG pocket TCG and remembered I had it loaded on my Miyoo Mini which I had with me. Since, I fired up the game and now finding myself replaying it. OG mobile/portable gaming is where it's at...no micro transactions, no artificial grinds, no ads, no being "timed out" on a feature...just gameplay. Memories of picking up the game on launch day at Kmart after bugging my parents to take me there. It taught me how to play the actual TCG but in the end, spent more time playing the gameboy game than the physical cards...as to keep them from getting messed up.
Man, I played this game when I was 13 or 14 on my cousins Gameboy in Germany, I beat it, I was there on vacation for the entire summer. That was a little overs 20 years ago, the game does not look how I remember it looking.
I've only heard about this game in passing and never looked into it after that but after watching this I really wanna check it out! Great video as always, man! Thanks for the information!
I will always sing this games praises. Pocket TCG WISHES it could be as rewarding and fulfilling and even just plain fun this game and even its sequel are. And the music will always live in my head.
This was one of the defining games of my childhood. Played this thing everywhere I went. As I got older, I always wanted it back - 15 years ago I even found a Fan Translation of PTCG2 (only released in JP) and I STILL have that rom to this day. Up until Pocket TCG, I was playing it every year!
Its the game that got me into playing the card game back in early 2010's when i was around my early teens. Back when Pokemon Tcg wasn't as popular as Yugioh and Magic
The sequel to this game is so good as well. It's a bit longer, and there's some battles that force new rules onto you that may make you have to change your deck around, but it's still great, and made me wish we kept getting digital TCG games like this.
My cousin gave me a bunch of the original Pokemon games when I was younger. I was a Gen 3 kiddie, so it was really exciting to play what came before me. What surprised me then was that TCG GB would remain my favorite - both as a kid and to this day, and I will adore it forever. One of my favorites of the entire Game Boy lineup
I absolutely love this game. I wish there were more like it but I understand why huge companies choose not to make more (since they tend to not be very profitable). The closest thing to this in recent times is the second part of Inscryption (which I heard was inspired by Pokemon tcg gbc).
Of any game I’ve ever played THIS is the one I wish the most would be remade today. You can do it with the old cards, hell you can even do it with the new cards, just as long as I can fight trainers, get new cards and build my deck how I want when I want without having to worry about limited cards or unobtainable old events.i want to just get all the cards. Build whatever deck or play whatever self set challenge and have full access to the whole games list of cards whenever I play it.
Give tcg live a try. Talking about microtransactions. I went to my local card game shop and bought 100 code cards for 5€. I was able to build 2 decks and got plenty of ingame currency left. Ik the app sucks, but it's still the most accurate application that is based on the physical game.
This video game was fantastic. Taught me how to play the TCG. It's amazing how faithful it is to the real card game compared to say Yu-Gi-Oh! Dark Duel Stories. The pixel artists faithfully adapted the real card illustrations and the music is fantastic too.
As someone who always traveled around a lot, it was pretty much my only option to play the TCG. It’s why I was hoping for a 2nd game. All these years later I played some online then finally the pocket. Still think it would be cool to have another story for a single player though, but I get it if it’s not for everyone. Maybe I’ll find a good fan mod someday for 2nd, 3rd, 4th game with new cards.
This is a super fun game and I recently replayed a rom of it. The one tiny thing that bugged me I'll breakdown: this game is very easy to spam especially against later "stronger" trainers by using simple cards like Ponyta who have a decent amount of attack damage from only a single energy attachment. You can literally beat 95% of the game with the original "Charmander and friends" base deck if you focus on Ponyta. As you progress in the game the opposing trainers start to focus evolution and using more powerful attacks which require multiple energy cards, both of which cause your opponents to go multiple turns without doing any damage at all. Remember, they aren't going to get the energy cards they need every turn and many of these really strong attacks make the opponent skip an attack and/or discard energy cards they attached. With Ponyta you start hammering them by turn 2. By the time they evolve, stack energy, etc etc... you've already won. This strategy even works against elemental mismatches, for example playing a fire deck against a water deck. Using this strategy the game actually gets easier as you progress. Now the part that bugs me, if you use this strategy you will basically have one deck you used the entire game and that deck DOES NOT WORK for the final trainers (what are basically the "elite four" stage of the end game) and you have to have different decks for each one and really know how to use each one of those decks. Regardless of your strategy the game isn't all that hard until you get to the very end and the difficulty jumps up substantially.
Thank you for sharing. I love how you can learn little strategies like this and we can share them. I appreciate you watching and this comment. Thank you.
@@Livvvid When if first got this game as a kid and when trying to replay later as an adult I essentially tried to play it like an actual pokemon game: by focusing on evolution and powerful attacks. I always got my a$$ handed to me and got really frustrated. One day I said "screw it, I'm going to just spam these low energy quick constant attacks" and it worked. I breezed through the rest of the game this way.... Until the end. I still never beat the end because at that point I didn't feel like going back and making multiple decks and basically starting over.
I'm one of the luckier people when it comes to this game. Like a ton of people, my mom bought me this game in 1998 along with Pokemon Blue version. The holo promo Meowth card the TCG Gameboy game came with lived in my original collection binder, in my closet from 2000-2021 when I ultimately opened it and sent it off to PSA for grading. Upon getting it back, it got a PSA 10 grade, and when I went to look up what it sells for, I realized there were zero of them sold on the entire internet for years since it's apparently nearly impossible to get a PSA 10 on those due to print lines and damage from packaging. To this day, out of a total of 3,600 graded Meowths, only 69 have gotten a 10. It sold immediately for $2,000 back in 2021. Pretty solid investment, mom.
DUDE! When I was a kid, I would have this up on my gameboy for hours while I laid in bed just listening to the music. It is the single greatest soundtrack for any video game ever. I will die on that hill. I still listen to these songs to this day as I work.
I was one of the few among my peers who actually learned to play the game and even attented the Pokemon League when Fossil was released. As a new player you received a small booklet in which you collected stamps for various activities like playing a match or teaching the game to another player. Once you got enough stamps they gave you a promo card and a pin which depicted one of the badges of the real game. You could get all eight of them. I´ll never forget beating the shit out of Charizards with my fast Rattata deck. Good times, good times.
Always love seeing vidoes that shows off this gem of a game. Was good back then and its still good now. Also the music, dear god the music, absolutely fantastic.
I regret not learning to play the card game when I was young, especially since it doesn't seem as complicated as I thought it was. I do like to buy packs though, even if only to look at the cards and give them to people who might like them. I once got the entire Flygon line in a pack!...Though, given Flygon's reputation, I'm not sure if that's an accomplishment, heheheh! Daring of Gamefreak to make an electronic version of their TCG (and even before Yu-Gi-Oh did), but I'm glad it holds up.
I have the same regret. I really wish they'd try again but I doubt it will ever happen in this form again. They'll make it about microtransactions or something. You're always in my comments giving your thoughts and I just want to say thank you sean.

My parents made me leave it on the counter every day before school after that and I was so sad lol. Jesus, just listening to the music again in this video sends me right back to 13 years old. Great video!

Haymaker will carry you through most of this game, and there’s a girl in the Water Club who will battle you for 2 prizes and gives you packs with most of what you need to make it. It’s a quick and easy way to get packs.
Im taking a break over the weekend but kept playing and yeah that's exactly who I found in my second play through. She only has 2 prizes so she is quick to beat for new cards. Thanks for watching and commenting. I appreciate you.
@@Livvvid There are multiple mods of the game. Ptcg Neo changes all cards into gen2, Generations changes them into gen 1-9. I've a gymleader/anime version as well. Even a Digimon version ^^
The legendary dragonite did get a card with his in-game art which coincidentally came as a promo card from the japanese version of TCG1, unlike the rest of the world who got the stinky meowth.
yeah i was going to mention that. There are always little changes from the japanese versions that get stripped for western releases and I always took it personal lol
@@Livvvid it's even worse with the lugia promo card from TCG2; i love the tcg and mostly collect vintage cards with artwork from ken sugimori, and the price of that promo lugia is just gross, the dragonite at least is very affordable and a really beautiful card.
Had this game when I was in 6th grade. Beat it, loved every minute of it, and was in awe of how much better the colors were than in gen 1 and 2. Also was in awe of my character being able to run 😂
I regularly go back and replay this and the sequel. I remember being a kid and not understanding how to deck build and getting so mad I couldn't brute force my way through the game. There is a Japanese rom hack of Fire Red that combines the events of the 2 TCG GB games and the region of Holon and the Delta Species from the TCG. Game is really good if you can overlook that it is a Moemon rom hack
I love this game. Played it a lot as a kid and recently played it in a ROM emulator and then I purchased my nintendo switch to be able to officially play the game. I love my Nidoking deck and using toxic.
I loved this game as a kid and it sucks they never made a newer version of it. There are modded versions of this game that fans have made it even better.
I played GB2 for countless hours back then. Always hoped to see another Pokemon TCG game with similar style but that's not gonna happen any soon imo.. Interesting random fact I've heard since back then is - all the important named characters such as Mason Lab members, Club Masters and furthurmore, got their names from actual people behind development of TCG, or ones who have won the Japanese championships. (At least with the original JP version)
I wish they made new versions of this game with new cards and with perhaps old school pixelart and without the option of buying cards with real money. The soundtrack and gameplay of this game is timeless!
In college, I ran a pokemon tabletop game that had 6 regular players for the entire year. It was my first game I ever ran and I was fully winging it. The only thing I knew was I was going to use that guy that always played cards that made him lose, while acting like it was all good things. I couldn't find info on him, so I based him on a vauge memory of him and gave him an nearly indestructible shiny shuckle, that didn't have any attacking moves. Best. NPC. Ever. He was pretty much the quest giver that would love to show up at the most impossible places, introducing himself through heavy nerd breathing. They would be miles deep, underground, needed to get through multiple puzzles, that I made a point of saying closed behind them, and then he would just show up and be like "Hey... I got a request for you guys... I need you to help me get through this here cave." Near the end, I decided to make him end up being Giovani in disguise. They ended up making their own team rocket :X They killed so many people...
Hahahha. Its cus i do this full time and I'm kinda crazy with it now. I wake up at 5am and do script/editing before streaming for 6 hours at around 3pm haha.
I too also owned this game as a Highschooler. I don't own it anymore, but Pokemon Pocket TCG has scratched the itch against the paper TCG is too expensive of a hobby for me.
Great video! Never seen you before, but I'm a subscriber now! This game is my jam that I found as an adult via emulation and it's sooo good to see it get some love. That all said, you're just gonna disrespect Ronald's theme and not mention it??? His theme is so funky, he should be allowed to join the DK Crew!
I've literally been playing this on and off since pocket was released. I miss the days when they would make single player RPGs out of TCGs like this one and the Tag Force games. Most of the card based games these days are roguelikes for some reason
I never played the tcg, just collected. Every time I got a card, it went straight into the binder. Magic was/is my go to tcg. Yugioh… I used to love it, just not for me anymore.
I think a large reason why they didn't want to continue the virtual TCG is because its price of entry is steep for kids and the fact that despite being veey similar to the real life TCG, the fact that collecting the cards online is not going to translate to collecting them in real life.
you can find a english subbed Pokemon TCG 2... it was never released in english and can only be accessed in english through fanmade translated roms.

It's 2025 and this is still the best introduction to playing the Pokémon TCG.
Enough said.
Wow, I had no idea that the same person made the soundtrack for both this and Bomberman 64. Bomberman 64 is one of ym favorite soundtracks of all time!
11:55 I remember being very happy and feeling like a genius when I realised a simple Rattata kills Mr.Mime easily, dealing 20dmg and being resistant to Psychic
Haha nice dude gj.
grew up with pokemon gen 1 but never knew about this game until a few years ago obviously the moment i learned about it i instantly played it and i liked it...still play this from time to time...
a few weeks ago a friend introduced me to pokemon tcg pocket for android ( i almost never play smartphone games but since its pokemon tcg i tried)...thats what i play right now on the go
I would honestly love to try pokemon tgc irl but from the start without all the bloat, even if there is a metagame.
Yeah I actually like the early game and have fear of all the stuff they add later lol.
I vaguely remember being surprised and happy to get a Mew card in the Psychic Club 🧿
I just played through this game a few weeks ago on Switch Online. Such a good game still!
I still remember being 12, having to beat the elite 4 in one go, and when I made it I was beyond happy
The pixel card art still looks great to this day. There is a sequel that released in Japan only but fans have translated the game to English.
This game save at each turn during battle so you can cheat by pressing A+B+Start+Select at the same time the game will reset (or just turn off your game boy)and you can do your turn again and sometime win the battle it was pretty cleaver at the time !!! I have this game almost at lauch it came with Meowth promo GB real card i still have it with the game complete in box ,still love this game it was so good for the time and i was sad that the 2001 sequel was never translate and release here ,i got a chinese bootleg translate copie a couple year ago but the save battery die so quickly i was never able to finish it !!!
This game made car trips as a child such a treat.
an updated hack of this with Gen 2 in it was just released, and its amazing.
Know where I can get it?
@@Livvvid There are multiple mods of the game. Ptcg Neo changes all cards into gen2, Generations changes them into gen 1-9. I've a gymleader/anime version as well. Even a Digimon version ^^
The legendary dragonite did get a card with his in-game art which coincidentally came as a promo card from the japanese version of TCG1, unlike the rest of the world who got the stinky meowth.
yeah i was going to mention that. There are always little changes from the japanese versions that get stripped for western releases and I always took it personal lol
@@Livvvid it's even worse with the lugia promo card from TCG2; i love the tcg and mostly collect vintage cards with artwork from ken sugimori, and the price of that promo lugia is just gross, the dragonite at least is very affordable and a really beautiful card.
why do you sound like my twin lol. Ive been rebuilding my gen 1-2 tcg collection for the sugimori art.
Had this game when I was in 6th grade. Beat it, loved every minute of it, and was in awe of how much better the colors were than in gen 1 and 2. Also was in awe of my character being able to run 😂
Just subbed. Good vid
Thank you so much for watching and subscribing! I appreciate it.
This is definitely one of my all-time favourite Pokemon games.
Those of us who have played it were introduced to Imakuni this way
I knew I should have talked about him....
Appreciate you watching and commenting.
Sounds like a really interesting romhack. I would like to play the English translated sequel
@Livvvid it's super easy to find the english patch. Would link it but youtbe doesn't like external links on comments
@@LivvvidI have the translated rom if you’d like it.
Yeah if you don't mind. I have my discord in the description. Thank you.
Probably one of my favorite pokémon games. I always get excited starting a new game.
It has been a real missed opportunity that they haven't made a new game in this series. Mobile app doesn't count.
I think I beat this game around 5 times. Even played it 5 years again, after I first got it. Will definitely check it out again.
(At least with the original JP version)
to me it has one of the best osts ever, up there with DKC2 and Chrono Trigger. Every tune is flawless.
Water, Rock, and Psychic theme is goated.
Out of all games I regret getting rid of as a kid, I regret getting rid of this one the most. Thanks for the video
This needs a sequel
Man I was so addicted to this game as a kid. Of course I never got very far because I just did not understand the rules very well, much less the meta
I wish they made new versions of this game with new cards and with perhaps old school pixelart and without the option of buying cards with real money. The soundtrack and gameplay of this game is timeless!
The music had some great tracks in it!
I need you to help me get through this here cave."
Near the end, I decided to make him end up being Giovani in disguise.
They ended up making their own team rocket :X They killed so many people...
Dude that's about as unique a story I've heard hahaha. That's really cool though thank you for sharing.
Now I want a walking (or running) RPG adventure in Pocket!
i used to play dis on da play ground at school .-.
The Yugioh TCG games on Gameboy advance slap. You get a pack for winning a duel. It’s that simple and so good
I played Eternal Duelist Soul and a few others a lot, I want to make videos for those eventually.
i played the game all the way thru on the switch, it was awesome. i went with a blastoise deck for the most of it. got super lucky and opened multiple
I played TCG 2 last year and I definitely recommend it! There are some things that are frustrating but it’s just as fun the original!
I remember having this. It would never save so i gave up on it. I bought 2 different copies too. It was fun until I had to turn off the Gameboy.
I'm surprised at how quickly you make your videos, keep it up I think that soon you will double your subscribers or even more.
This game is seriously so good. Any tcg fan needs to play this
Great video!
I would love a modern day remake of Pokemon Tcg from the Gameboy. I liked it more than the mainline pokemon games
Awesome video. Loved this game as a kid! Keep up the good work.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I've literally been playing this on and off since pocket was released. I miss the days when they would make single player RPGs out of TCGs like this one and the Tag Force games. Most of the card based games these days are roguelikes for some reason
One of my favorite games of all time
Bro this game felt so difficult back in the day 😵
try it :).
Thank you for watching and commenting man. I see you all the time and appreciate it.
This game was a masterpiece !
Play the second one, it is huge, with much more battles and bigger card pool
I never played the tcg, just collected. Every time I got a card, it went straight into the binder. Magic was/is my go to tcg. Yugioh… I used to love it, just not for me anymore.
Let me have a dragonite card I know you have multiple
Yugioh just went all in on power creep at all times
I still play through this game at least once a year. One of the all time best
4:32 Are those color combos an evangelion reference?
Def recommend the sequel and would watch your review of it! Great vid
I think a large reason why they didn't want to continue the virtual TCG is because its price of entry is steep for kids and the fact that despite being veey similar to the real life TCG, the fact that collecting the cards online is not going to translate to collecting them in real life.
I didn’t know that you can Collect special cards by linking up using the sensors on the gameboy color
Crazy
Fun fact: Ronald's name in Japan is "Land", as a MtG reference.
A DS version of this would habe been so great to play
I didn't absolutely fly home to watch this video
That would be illegal
;). Have a great weekend quinn. If you play soccer, score some goals for me.
I will buy it on Gameboy, it always been on my radar but your video convinced me!
It's a classic, you're gonna have a blast.
I remember always reading that Charmander and friends was the best deck to start with 👀🤔
