    Well then guys.......
After watching Mark Bryan and Fils rally battles, in particularly their slalom race between their tto2 and fazer mk2 rally it was time to take things further!
Whilst chatting with Craig at the OAG a few weeks back he stated that he believed that no rally car would be able to match the XVO1 on the slalom challenge.
So me being me told him to set me a time and I would attempt to beat it with my vintage Porshe 959!
I was shocked at how good Craigs attempt was when the video went live -
    7.41 seconds!!
After seeing that, I was instantly worried!
But, I had called him out..... and in the spirit of true sportsmanship set out to give it my best shot with my 38 year old Tamiya icon!
Will the yoda be left with egg on his face, keep watching to find out! 😉

It did very well out there and I say it a very close race. Considering the fact the 959 was engineered almost 40 years ago only being a few seconds behind a modern rally chassis is very impressive and I almost consider it a tie . Giving it a 1/2 second handicap for each decade it is behind they are neck and neck!! It was cool seeing it run around out there and you guys gave it all she had!! Great run !!

Ah mate, awesome comment, thank you Sir! 🙏 😊
Yes indeed, this chassis really does handle very nicely...... especially as it is 38 years old, as is the technigold motor that it is running on!
Hats off to Craig, his run is really going to take some beating..... he done me good and proper!
Must admit though, the Porshe did seem to be lacking punch!
I usually run lipos these days, but couldn't fit one in this vintage chassis so had to use a very old NMH that was past it's best.
I think with a new battery, and turning the timing up on the technigold motor I may be able to get a bit more power to slide that end out a little and pull away a bit quicker out of the end cone..... potentially saving a second perhaps? 🤔
Who knows..... but for now, I've had my arse whipped by Craig!
The best car/driver combo won, and I'm cool with that, it was great fun! 😊

Yes mate, I can relate to that one.....
As you saw, I hit more than my fair share of cones, and even put that shockingly fragile rally car on her roof...... 🙄🤕
But sometimes it's nice to get the old classics out for a run, and being a rally car the odd dent and ding give it character!
Besides, I have my fully restored mint condition one on the shelf to admire..... this one's for enjoying!

Love that Addam has made a brave attempt to save you here Yoda 😁 I think there is way more in this chassis and I think a little more work you would be able to get down into the lower 8s with it.

Fair play to Addam, I had to pin that comment buddy!
And yes, I think with practice, and some tweaking I might be able to shave a little time off...... but I don't think 7.41 is achievable!

"Onyx's balloon knot!" 😂😂😂 - Sorry I'm so late to the party on this one, fellas! I've been submerged in Family visits the past week and a half and just getting caught up now.
Good on ya for taking out the 959 and putting it to work. Honestly, it was pretty darn quick! It's a rare sight to see one in action.
Excellent stuff guys, lots of laughs as always!

      No worries dude!!
I thought things had been a bit quiet on the Poor boys rc front for a while..... but family is always important.
I thought balloon knot was a less offensive description and more suitable for You Tube..... although with the amount of 'F' bombs Taylor drops I honestly don't know why I bother! 🤷‍♂️ 🙄
Yeah man, I think the 959 done particularly well for a 38 year old car...... it beat my attempt with the Fazer mk2.
Just gutted I didn't manage to beat Craigs 7.41 with his XVO1!

Wasn't planning on going upside down..... but a few dents and dings give these rally cars that realistic look, and each one tells a story!
I actually built this one as a runner....
I done a full 'as new' restoration of a 959 and a Celica GRB a few years back (videos are in our back catalogue)
Both are totally mint condition and stay on the shelf!
I built this one with all the left over parts..... with the intention of having one to run.
This one is far from mint, but mechanically sound.
I fitted it with aluminium wishbones and suspension arms to make it tougher, as the original plastic ones have always been an issue on these from back in the day.
I run this one regularly, and it's a joy to drive...... pretty reliable to.
Check out our Porshe 959 and Toyota Celica GRB summer photo shoot video from last year if you fancy seeing the fully restored examples!

I had the exact same issue with my TT02 and it killed the run times! I must say well done to Taylor, his little go showed he could also be a contender! You almost beat me mate, I need to get out there and try again... but got a few "issues" at the moment that is limiting my play time!!! This was great fun to watch, Taylor's commentary had me in stiches! Craig is still on top of the pile then! Respect! 🤗👌👍

It started off bad, but slowly improved as I got to grip with things.
The car was definitely lacking punch, I don't think that battery is in great condition..... tempted to try again on a brand new NMH and with the timing turned up on the technigold!
And yes, the back end was stepping out every so often...... but overall this vintage chassis does still handle exceptionally well!
Still didn't manage to catch you though mate, got close though!!! 😂
As for Craig's time, that's going to take some beating dude-
Great chassis and great driving on his part.

Epic effort with the old girl. RC channel makes adaptors for the original hubs to fit 12mm hex modern wheels...Or apparently drive hexes from the Astute fit. Think some modern wheels and tyres will help. 40 year old rubber ain't quite got bite they once had.
Awesome seeing the 959 being driven. My runner 959 is ready to go.. might throw some cones out too.

Yes, you have a good point with the tires.
Although the slicks don't seem to age the way the rally blocks have.
The rally blocks go rock hard and split over time, but the slicks all seem to keep lovely and soft!
I wasn't aware that the Astutes hex fitments were compatible, enabling different wheels to be fitted!
Cheers for the tip, I actually have a vintage Astute that I fully restored (featured in our back catalogue of videos)

Fair play for wanting to drive it mate, they do drive really well.
Unfortunately, the design of the front and rear arms/wishbones and the hubs was inherently flawed from day one.
As well as the plastic being too brittle, the actual plastic components were not thick enough at all the points where the parts were mounted together using pins and screws mate.
In my eyes the only way they can stay true to the original design would be to re cast the original wishbones and hubs in Aluminum rather than plastic.
I know this would be expensive, but it's not going to be a cheap kit anyway..... and I'm sure people would be willing to pay anything to own one!
Unfortunately, knowing Tamiya, the issues will not be addressed at all..... but at least there will be parts available again if it was to be re released.

I knew the XVO1 was good, as I've driven Daz's a few times...... but I wasn't expecting you to get down in the sevens!
When you posted your entry I immediately knew I was potentially in trouble!! 😬
The 959 handles well, bloody well for a 38 year 'relic' as you called it!!
It did however seem to lack the power it needed to flick that rear end out and propel itself forward.
My NMH packs ain't great, and are definitely lacking oomph.....
I'm wondering if it's worth a pinion change, new battery, and turning up the timing on the motor and have another go,?

Mate, that slalom challenge is not as easy as it looks..... but I think my 38 year old relic done itself proud against the far more modern, and highly regarded XVO1.
She did seem to lack punch, and you could clearly see the battery depletion as the runs went on, it wasn't a good battery in the first place.
But not making excuses, Craig well and truly done me on this one.
In all honesty, I think a superstock would be too much for this old timer, the plastics are so brittle, and shatter just by looking at it wrong!
But, I may turn up the motor timing and buy a new NMH pack (I usually use lipo these days, but it's too tight in this one)..... and perhaps have another go!
      Watch this space matey.
Cheers for stopping by buddy. 😊

@@greenhawksrc6806 Yeah mate, I heard the F Bombs.... but fuck it, all in good fun... At 38 years old it's still younger than you by far... LOL. Also, looked like slicks not rally block tires, that's right, TIRES not tyres, one don't say or spell, "Man I'm Tyred" LOL... Or I'm now retyred... LMAO.... Just busting your balls mate... Yes Sir, Craig did a great job....

Oi cheeky..... I'm not even 50 yet!! 😝
      I'm still in my prime!!!
The 959 first came out when I was ten years old..... I got my first 959 kit at age 11,and built it all myself, much to my parents amazement!!
Oh boy, don't start Taylor off on the whole tires/tyres thing..... we have had so many arguments over that one!!! 😂
Regardless of how it's spelt, all I care about is how well they grip for the surface at hand, and more importantly -
      How nice they smell!!
You are not a true member of the UA-cam RC community unless you have a severe tire/tyre sniffing addiction, however you want to spell it! 😂 😅 🤣 👍

Looks like the diffs are unloading in the turns and causing the car to veer sharply.

Very good comment fella, think you make a good point there.
The rear end was definitely snatchy at times as I went into the tight turns!
This old girl usually only gets a light run around the garden..... It doesn't usually get pushed this hard!
But it was fun to give it a go at beating Craig's time in his XVO1.
      Cheers for watching buddy. 😊

I have to say, I do not think using sticks did you any favors, I'd swap controllers and I am sure you can shave a bit off, but doubt it will beat Team OAG 👍🏁
On another note with that 959 you should raffle it and buy yourself a little van to tour the UK model shops with 🙄

Oooooh..... I don't think I could ever raffle off any of my original rare vintage models buddy, that would be a real 'kick' to the balls!! 😉
      As for the tires-
Unfortunately getting parts for this car is very hard, and shockingly expensive!
You are looking at around £400 for a set of new old stock rally blocks for one of these, and that's if you're lucky enough to find any!! 🤑
Unfortunately they are a smaller hex pattern on the fitment which rules out using anything else.
But I certainly get your point mate.
Overall, Craig's time of 7.41 seconds is shockingly quick..... he done me good and proper this time!
Hope some other channels step up and challenge him.
All in all, great fun though.
      Cheers for watching guys. 😊
