@@ArnavKhode Because unless people can’t a read charts diesels are here to stay. As much as I hate to say it, steams engines are beautiful hungry inefficient and expensive (really expensive) machines, diesels are cheaper and more reliable than steam.
Steam engines are nice, but there time has passed and it will never return.

I have NEVER heard an engineer on a diesel make there horn "sing" the way a steamer can. High... low...
It's unfortunately not the same design. The steam engine is based on pressure whereas the diesel horn is activated by a controller.
Check out boats, they have some cool horn effects.

Steamship whistle could, maybe. But about only that. And it would have to be the whistle of one of the great and departed ocean liners. A riverboat won't cut it.

Unfortunately such a smooth, sleek, fast ship will never sail the seas again, ferrying passengers across the Atlantic. I'm not saying I would want to go back to 1950s - 60s America, but if I could bring back something from that era, it would be that ocean liner.

The irony is that Congress and the Navy wanted to keep her available to them for so long - because of her potential as a soldier transport in the event of the outbreak of another enormous war - that they prevented her from being sold when she was still in condition to be fixed up and put back to sea. Because they wanted her to be available to sail, they prevented her from sailing, thus meaning she fell into disrepair so bad that she can't be made to sail again.

The fact that 4014s whistle is loud enough to start to overload the cameras microphone from what I assume is a couple hundred feet, should tell you all you need to know about her.
Lol i was in Denver when she left station, my family and I had left after she departed and even 2 miles away we could still hear the beasts horn.

Big boy horn : uses steam compression as offset of furnace chamber to create noise in a whistle
GE loco : uses electric motor to compress air and blast through an air horn
Obviously we know who has the bigger bark.
#4014 has a whistle, not a horn.
The whistle draws steam from the boiler itself, same supply as the engine. In fact blowing the whistle too much reduces how much power the engine has, making the fireman sweat to get it back.

What an amazing & aggressive sounding whistle that big boy 4014 has, this whistle was an excellent fit for this locomotive and you really have to love the sound of it.
I was lucky enough to see this thing in person twice. The first time I was lucky enough to catch it as it was just ready to leave. I got to be pretty much 30 feet away from it as it pulled out of Omaha Station, blaring it's horn. Suddenly I understood why the Adeptus Mechanicus believe in machines having spirits. It certainly sounds like it does.

Its an engineer thing, kinda like pilots. Big Boy won, anything else the BNSF engineer would have done would have just been embarrassing, so he was silent!
As a resident of KC close to where this is, the area is super strict on train horns due to the fact that this line basically runs right through the middle of Kansas City.

And even though today’s diesels are a lot stronger than they where in the 1940’s, I still think 4014 would give them a run for their money.
@@nathandeal9703 wrong dude diesel engine aint strong you can notice there are 2 diesel trains in long cart and diesel trains cant carry those carts at high mountains it only produce 1500 HP it is only design for passengers but Big Boy can produced upto 7000 HP by itself

I was trying to find a place to park so I could see Big Boy just it was pulling into San Antonio. The visit was not largely announced to the general public so many people had no idea it was coming. It pulled part way out onto a bridge over Nolan St., stopped, and blew two whistle blasts. A man was walking along the street below. After a moment I saw a "wait a minute!" look slowly come across his face as he realized that what he had just heard was something he probably only knew from old movies. He stopped and slowly looked up at the bridge and saw the massive locomotive there. A complete look of incredulous disbelief slowly crept over his face as he walked right out into street to get closer, spellbound and utterly astonished at the sight of something he had only heard about from his grandparents and had only seen in old pictures. He could not believe his eyes.
I will never forget his reaction.
There is absolutely no sound that can compare to a steam whistle blowing, whether it's a polite toot-toot because the big thing (or any other steamer, big or small) is in a dense populated place and signalling a crossing, or a long, bellowing blast carrying across open prarie. A massive steam locomotive's whistle is the sound of our forgotten past. There was an awful lot of darkness and ugliness in that era, as in today, that deserves to be relegated to the dustbin of history; forgotten, except in museums where those who perpetrated the evils are castigated as vile.
The whistle of a steam engine is _not_ one of those things that should be forgotten.
I refer to the Big Boy whistle as the Iron Shofar. Sounds heavenly majestic!

I love how loud and proud 4014's whistle sounds. It makes me proud knowing that the world's largest locomotives were American built and is a symbol of our railroad history. I hope they keep 4014 pounding the rails for years to come.
That was great. Seen the horn battle a few times. Chased 4014 on the race to Ogden, then through NE Oklahoma during the 1st system tour, then through SE Oklahoma during the 2nd tour. Cant wait to chase 4014 in 2024!!!

That was at Kansas City Union Station. I was there but didn't get to hear that. I did on another trip when 4014 went through Jefferson City. Holy C*** that is a magnificent sound.
