As a 76-year old that grew up in Cheyenne four blocks from the Union Depot, this always gets the old heart going again. Thanks for the continuing coverage.
Hi Rickie my old driver had a special whistle 2 say goodbye 2 his daughter when we went past his house He wanted 2 introduce me 2 her but I was 2 shy Still have not met her till this day
really. Kind of like junkyard dogs, but instead stock yard cows. They just seem to be hanging out in the parking lot as I don't really see them as being fenced in.
Another memory: riding the night mail from Cheyenne to Omaha, passing through Cozad around midnight, and the distinctive smell of the alfalfa refineries.
I have no idea how you were able to get to so many places for this video, but you sure nailed it....what a great video, cheers from Central Florida, Paul
I really appreciate you keeping us updated on the activities of 4014 (and of course 844). Do you know if the UP intends to keep 3985 running? I really hope so. UP Superpower Trio.
UP intends to move the Challenger to static display i think, but it was officially taken off the roster a bit back. It didnt pass the inspections, and the steam program funds can only support 2 engines
That was a good day to be in the chase on highway 30... I got 90 minutes of prime chase time... I did see myself in the earlier scenes and was watching at Cozad off to the right of your camera angle. i was in the pack at 10:08-11
Amaazzzing! When the other go woo-hoo or whooooo this gorgeous goes mauuummm wooomm heheheh Just like my 7 y-old neighbor says Ty for posting, this is just great (= Hugs from Brazil. Tc
Three tenders? Are they for water?seems like fuel is available, but water may be hard to get because the old system is not available? Great video thanks for posting.
Wouldn’t be surprised to see the tender getting filled by a fire engine pumper hooked up to a hydrant. That’s how they would fill the tender on C&O 614 when she did her excursion runs in the late 90’s in NY.
It'd be Kool to know how much steam pressure they're utilizing as their going down the line. I bet it's not more than 100 psi to keep this train chugging along
It's finally got dust covers on the cylinders. The steam injector could do with a lick of paint or leave it as it is & the modellers should paint the injector rusty. There's no modeller that l know of whom has a model of 4014 exactly as it is today.
As a retired English railWAY staff member it seems a great shame that such a magnificent, vast locomotive should be hauling such a short train of just 16 other vehicles. Presunably the diesel loco in the train (or "consist" to use your term) is being hauled and not providing any tractive effort. The fraight train seen in the background in some shots is more what I would expect of one of the "ships" of the Great Plains of the Western USA. Ten foot high containers double stacked would NEVER get through the tunnels, bridges and suchlike of the railways of mainland Europe, never mind the on the English lines with our even smaller structure gauge.
4014 is delivering all the power. The diesel is there to supply compressed air for braking to the cars to make the consist legal to operate on Class 1 track. It also serves as a backup if 4014 suffers a failure requiring a removal from mainline traffic to a safe siding for repair. Big Boy is hardly working with this load compared to when it pulled heavy weight up and down the mountains. Coal has been replaced with fuel oil for the restoration. Two firemen could not shovel coal into the firebox fast enough to keep the steam pressures up to maintain track speed when it was in revenue service. Conversion to fuel oil allows us to see him in operation again. Otherwise, Big Boy would be parked in a museum somewhere silent and sad. Now, the world comes to the tracks to watch the largest steam locomotive ever built travel the country loud and proud! Breathtaking…
@@alexwilliams9900 No, the electric generator car is further back. Search for 4014 Houston, and you’ll see the train as it is on its tour through Texas. Absolutely magnificent!
I love seeing the Big Boy in action just as much as everyone else, but how about letting it pull a real train between outings to make it earn it's keep.
Renewing the grease in the rod bushings, which must be done within 150 miles of last renewal. As it's about 50 miles from North Platte to Cozad, I'll guess that they are exceeding the minimum requirement. Lubrication is relatively cheap insurance--certainly cheaper than cooking a bushing!

I filmed the big boy at Cheyenne WY
That whistle still gives me chills every time I hear it!

Lovely Footage. Enjoying from the UK.
At 2:50 I like those cows hanging around the stockyard office.
really. Kind of like junkyard dogs, but instead stock yard cows. They just seem to be hanging out in the parking lot as I don't really see them as being fenced in.
Great videos. Would love to see it pulling a real load of freight cars like it did back in the day.

I remember that smell from traveling through Nebraska on US 30 on several summer trips out west with my parents back in the 1960s.
I just now noticed polished cylinder head covers , very nice.

I like train videos on UA-cam 👍
Waiting to see Hobo Shoestring riding on one of the sand cars!
How awesome that would be!!!!! Love me some Shoestring!!!
LOL , I got $10 dollars to see that ! Classic !
롤 모바일 게임 하고 있는 중 가장 큰 이유 없이 그냥 내가 더 좋을
the shot at 4:15 may well be one of the best shot of the 4014 ever taken
Some fantastic views under steam! Really cool shot coming out of the bend. Thanks for post!
Superb video of the 4014, and a doublestack train passing by the 4014 near Kearney, NE (to avoid confusion with another Kearny in NJ)
As long as this magnificent Big Boy is alive, the glorious ALCo will live on!
Your Awesome 😎 Nick ! Making Videogates and History worth Remembering! USA 🇺🇸 Railroad 🛤
This is what's I saw in Wagoner Oklahoma last Thursday. The whistle nearly blew my ears out.
That steam whistle, DAAAAMn!! :D I love it
Great clips and sounds especially from the bridge when the train is leaving Cozad! Thank You For Sharing!
Fire breathing American monster 4014, let her roll awesome.....Thanks Nick....!
Goosebumps. I miss steam engines.
Very nicely done! Thank you!
Fan bloody tastic 😎👌awesomeness
Thanks for the video, very cool! I wonder why they picked those old discolored hopper cars to add to a clean and shiny consist?
Agreed, makes it look old and junky
The nicest tea i drank was made on a steam engine when i was a fireman
I was the guy dressed in black getting blasted with steam in cozad.
Looks like the front right cylinder is leaking steam again!
One day I'll get to see This beauty
It would be great to see it pulling a lash up from the forties with vintage cars from fallen flags.
I really appreciate you keeping us updated on the activities of 4014 (and of course 844). Do you know if the UP intends to keep 3985 running? I really hope so. UP Superpower Trio.
i watched some thing and 1 thing they said they were going to use parts from the 3985 to help rebuild the 4014
UP intends to move the Challenger to static display i think, but it was officially taken off the roster a bit back. It didnt pass the inspections, and the steam program funds can only support 2 engines
@@AndrewLieb Thank you, but boo hoo. Sniff Sniff.
Thanks Nick I really enjoyed this! On a side note, I didn't realize that UP used concrete ties. Interesting.

Absolutely wonderful videos Nick. Keep them coming! I am wondering why no passengers tho? Anyone know?
Amazing video!!!
Nick, I can’t thank you enough.

Wish this engine would go down old Tennessee tracks through Cowan ,Tn this would be amazing because of tunnel and mountain it would cross
What an engine!!!
Best beautiful sharing
Nice, only the train is not too easy for the 4015??? , Greetings from Berlin/ Germany. Sven
Great shots.
Great footage you got.

Great footage Nick. Subscribed.
I saw the X4014 come through and stop in Fort Worth on the 14th and leave at 8AM the 15th!
One huge locomotive until you see her passing a double stack “ normal” train at around 12 mins…. Wonderful to see in steam again.
Well done-! Where were the closing credits-? Appreciated the town locations added to your video.
love to see this train
The power of steam is king!!!
Die train veel rook .goed gevoel good filling
wonder how much weight bb can handle how many cars could he pull loaded would be fun to see that and they could make money also
Thanks for a great video!
I made this engine, coal car, and water tender out of black walnut and teak wood. It is about 5 ft long and it took me around 6months to complete.
I wish my Dad who worked the steam locos in India for 35 years could see this . By the way his name Maxwell . Cheers from Australia .
Comparatively a smaller train. Is it freight train? There are more curious onlookers to watch and take photos than are there to board!
excellent quality video. What are you shooting with?
Gonna have to get an N scale one and run it on the layout along with 4449!
It'd be Kool to know how much steam pressure they're utilizing as their going down the line. I bet it's not more than 100 psi to keep this train chugging along
I was there on Saturday

Grrreeeaaate video
Keep em coming
I hope they come to Seattle!
They wont. Its only going about as far west as denver and cheyenne, and as far east as New Orleans and St. Louis
Is He pulling freight because it's a licencing thing? or for revenue. and the passenger cars at the front are they accommodation for the crew?
Freight cars are for extra braking force. Passenger cars at front are for the crew and act as a mobile autozone for steam locomotives.
4:15...most awesome view!

I saw this in Cheyenne WY
Is the Steam under load, or is the diesel loco taking the strain

@@dickdaley9059 The more later engines used mechanical stokers to deliver the coal to the engine.
I like the Diesel there to help Grandma make it to the supermarket.
I believe that the diesel is there in case of a break down in the 4014.
I believe it’s just to provide electricity to the passenger cars
@@alexwilliams9900 No, the electric generator car is further back. Search for 4014 Houston, and you’ll see the train as it is on its tour through Texas. Absolutely magnificent!
Good to know, was always under the impression it was for generation power for the cars, and dynamic breaking.

An that whistle so lonely
What are they doing at 7:33?

They are certainly maintaining it to a high standard for longevity
I really prefer 3985 the whistle is much better no one can beat 844
Need an audio amp.
Wonder why they are towing some ratty looking outside-ribbed covered hoppers on this train.
I heard its to meet the axle count requirements
@Richard Harrold No, it was said its not revenue
@Richard Harroldif have you the money to restore an engine as big as 4014 revenue probably isn't important
Andere weet niet dat train kom
What are the two six axle cars between the loco’s tender and the diesel loco?
They are tenders as well just more water and maybe fuel.
Auxiliary water tender cars
I wish they would remove that annoying dinging damn bell. It really spoils what is otherwise a magnificent locomotive.
It's what was on it originally and its an FRA policy, so.........
Give her some smoke.
0:34...I think I wet my pants.
🚂 💨 😂 😅
Why extra cars
Why not?
With overcast skies, a UV filter would help.
Rip 3985
The old girl will return, thanks to a Midwest group, and gave UP the option to buy her back. :)
As a bonus: They will restore TO RUN, UP 5511!
Woulda rather seen the locomotive then steam when it first got going~
