Whether you go quail or small chicken breed, please remember that they don’t only need a coop, but they need a yard as well. They need to feel the grass under their feet and hunt bugs and graze for weeds. Chickens make great pets in small numbers. If you spend time with them and love them like you would your dogs or cat, you will have an amazing relationship and be rewarded with the best chicken cuddles and more eggs!

Our quail would often lay their eggs wherever, we'd find them in different areas daily. Please remember they need a run, so they can scratch around on the ground, find bugs and have as much of a natural area as possible. If startled they fly/jump straight up, so the enclosure should have high ceilings to prevent neck damage.

I took care of quails when I lived with my ex. Granted, they had a bigger walk in pen, but I’m sure they’d fare well in that coop. They are tiny. And people will pay a good amount for their eggs as well. You can split them up between meat birds and egg layers, if you want. We only did eggs but we did sell ones for meat birds. We did not butcher them ourselves, that was on the buyer.

Okra is a beautiful plant that looks great when planted amongst your front yard landscaping. The flowers are beautiful! I like 'Red Burgundy'. I know Priscilla loves her pickled Okra! Pickles are so easy to make. Maybe this will help "sweeten the pot"! Take care!

I was widowed in 2016 at the age of 38 and my husband was a UNION LABORER for 33 years (he was 12 yrs older than me). He was SO handy. He could build anything. Since his death and with Covid, I started to begin planting a lot of vegetables etc. I have rabbits that eat my lettuce amount other vegetables. I miss him so much bc he’d build me something raised like you are.
Do you WANT TO TAKE A TRIP TO LI to help a girl out? lol these videos remind me a lot of my late husband which is bittersweet for sure.

As someone with front yard chickens (no room in the back yard and the front yard gets more sun as it is south facing, I highly recommend about 6 chickens. I have an Easter Egger, a Buff Orpington, 2 Rhode Island Reds, a Cinnamon Queen , and one whose breed I cannot remember, and I get plenty of delicious eggs every day. I used PVC piping, chicken wire and hardware cloth to predator proof the coop yard. I have 3 tiny coops that the girls all love. Also, go to your county extension office and see if they offer a class in composting. It really helps and gives great ideas on how to do it. I don't know if oak leaves are going to be great for compost, as they are relatively high in tannic acid and I'm not sure how that would work in a compost heap. I know it works great for tanning leather, though. I am getting ready to put in raised beds out front and I'm thinking about using the "lasagna method" to build them up.

Thank you for showing me a way to get leaves up easier.
I say it like this because I have a physical disability and it’s hard to do things with my hands without dropping and breaking things in general.
Not that you can drop and break leaves but this seems so much easier to do.

If I may suggest doing with the rest of the leaves the same as you did in the beginning with the blower/vac that mulches it to help it start to break down and hopefully break down any possible weed seeds so that they can't grow.

I just watched your fatherautism where tou showed the quail. Good selection. Coturnix quail are awesome. My family are big breeder for them. They are awesome for both meat and eggs. The egg ratio is a 3 to 1 ratio (3 quail eggs to one chicken egg) the rabbit hutch looks amazing for them. Their poop is awesome as fertilizer. We sell thier poop to people as fertilizer for thier garden. If you ever have questions about the quail or want more we can take care of you. Our farm is Beam Farm

    Hey Asa,
if you are going to put birds in there, I would make it so that in the months where you aren't really growing any plants the birds can roam in those gardens.
Bird droppings are actually pretty good vertilizer, so having the birds roam those gardens is basically a natural automatic vertilizer system.
