Whether you go quail or small chicken breed, please remember that they don’t only need a coop, but they need a yard as well. They need to feel the grass under their feet and hunt bugs and graze for weeds. Chickens make great pets in small numbers. If you spend time with them and love them like you would your dogs or cat, you will have an amazing relationship and be rewarded with the best chicken cuddles and more eggs!
Our quail would often lay their eggs wherever, we'd find them in different areas daily. Please remember they need a run, so they can scratch around on the ground, find bugs and have as much of a natural area as possible. If startled they fly/jump straight up, so the enclosure should have high ceilings to prevent neck damage.
I took care of quails when I lived with my ex. Granted, they had a bigger walk in pen, but I’m sure they’d fare well in that coop. They are tiny. And people will pay a good amount for their eggs as well. You can split them up between meat birds and egg layers, if you want. We only did eggs but we did sell ones for meat birds. We did not butcher them ourselves, that was on the buyer.
Looks great! If you put casters on the raised bed you’ll be able to move it. Then Abby can walk around it and if you get bad weather, you can move it to protect the garden.
Okra is a beautiful plant that looks great when planted amongst your front yard landscaping. The flowers are beautiful! I like 'Red Burgundy'. I know Priscilla loves her pickled Okra! Pickles are so easy to make. Maybe this will help "sweeten the pot"! Take care!
I was widowed in 2016 at the age of 38 and my husband was a UNION LABORER for 33 years (he was 12 yrs older than me). He was SO handy. He could build anything. Since his death and with Covid, I started to begin planting a lot of vegetables etc. I have rabbits that eat my lettuce amount other vegetables. I miss him so much bc he’d build me something raised like you are. Do you WANT TO TAKE A TRIP TO LI to help a girl out? lol these videos remind me a lot of my late husband which is bittersweet for sure.
As someone with front yard chickens (no room in the back yard and the front yard gets more sun as it is south facing, I highly recommend about 6 chickens. I have an Easter Egger, a Buff Orpington, 2 Rhode Island Reds, a Cinnamon Queen , and one whose breed I cannot remember, and I get plenty of delicious eggs every day. I used PVC piping, chicken wire and hardware cloth to predator proof the coop yard. I have 3 tiny coops that the girls all love. Also, go to your county extension office and see if they offer a class in composting. It really helps and gives great ideas on how to do it. I don't know if oak leaves are going to be great for compost, as they are relatively high in tannic acid and I'm not sure how that would work in a compost heap. I know it works great for tanning leather, though. I am getting ready to put in raised beds out front and I'm thinking about using the "lasagna method" to build them up.
Thank you for showing me a way to get leaves up easier. I say it like this because I have a physical disability and it’s hard to do things with my hands without dropping and breaking things in general. Not that you can drop and break leaves but this seems so much easier to do.
If I may suggest doing with the rest of the leaves the same as you did in the beginning with the blower/vac that mulches it to help it start to break down and hopefully break down any possible weed seeds so that they can't grow.
I just watched your fatherautism where tou showed the quail. Good selection. Coturnix quail are awesome. My family are big breeder for them. They are awesome for both meat and eggs. The egg ratio is a 3 to 1 ratio (3 quail eggs to one chicken egg) the rabbit hutch looks amazing for them. Their poop is awesome as fertilizer. We sell thier poop to people as fertilizer for thier garden. If you ever have questions about the quail or want more we can take care of you. Our farm is Beam Farm
Haven't commented or watched your channel for a while but it's because l am working my ukw off. New job sorta not new now but lovin' everything lm doing. So happy you are all climbing up and progressing in an awesome way. Sometimes you should pat yourselves on the back and be proud as punch. ❤😊
A nice piece of side yard, loving the ideas of raised beds, shed etc. Yes I agree your mom would be the best to give you some ideas or suggestions. Blessings.
Hey Asa, if you are going to put birds in there, I would make it so that in the months where you aren't really growing any plants the birds can roam in those gardens. Bird droppings are actually pretty good vertilizer, so having the birds roam those gardens is basically a natural automatic vertilizer system.
I live on a farm in outback Australia your weather is similar to ours Asa you can plant all year, just make sure you soil temperature is around 60 degrees f.. I deal for beans, cucumbers, watermelon corn,... I'm sure you garden will thrive you do seem to have that green thumb. 👍💖
I am going to try growing peas, tomatoes, carrots and onions this year in pots. Also our own pumpkins for Halloween but I've never grown those before so fingers crossed 🤞
You should set up a worm farm. You can make them at home from an old wheelie bin. It's great to put any scraps in and the worm pee is incredible fertiliser for your plants.
Ace chickens. You will get an egg production. You need to build an enclosure. Easy to look after. And Cilla would prefer chickens. She can treat them as pets..chicken poop also makes good feed for your plants. So chickens are more productive.. just a thought bud ! 👍❤️👍
Hey why don’t you grow cucubitaceae. It’s a natural loofah. I think it’s in the pumpkin family. The day program my brother use to have a green house and they grew them and would sell them and plants of course. They are great for several different things. Just a thought.
You should get rabbits. Their poop is incredible fertilizer. They sre super sweet. I also have friends that breed rabbits for meat for emergencies on their homestead. You already have the hutch!
This is going to be really nice! Now, if Priscilla said she doesn’t want quails, I say go ahead and fix the coop up and you and the quails will enjoy your new home 🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️😂😂😂😂 But hey, you know your wife better than us 🤷🏽♀️🤷🏽♀️🤷🏽♀️
I love how you refer 2 Abby as a lil or tiny human, eventhough she's the size of a grown woman. She actually appears tall 4 a female, how tall is Abby??
My dad still calls me his little girl and I’m in my 40s I wouldn’t want him to stop.. He also calls me Grem which is short for Gremlin as in the movie as I didn’t like getting wet when I was small
QUAIL - worst bird. They hate noise, they hate disturbance. My sister tried - she lives in rural UK countryside. They would literally kill themselves with the smallest abnormality. If you want to go small - go Bantam Chickens
It always really annoys me when 1 person would like to buy something or do something and their partner just says NO! it’s like married or not, who are you to decide what another grown person does just because you aren’t interested? 🤷🏼♀️ It’s why when my husband proposed I told him that he will never get the final say in something I want to do, I refuse to ASK, discuss yes but I’d never ask permission

Your OG accent really comes out when you're working like your Mama does! Love seeing you doing this and seeing the accent come out.
Love this sort of video. Looking forward to how it turns out. 😊
I Love how you keep busy Asa 😀I never had Quail Eggs before..

Love these types of vlogs, looks awsome
Haven’t seen your mom in a while , she should come out and you two should do a gardening vlog for your channel.
We are going to show up for a visit soon. I am looking forward to it.
have your mom come and help we love her!!!
Looks great! If you put casters on the raised bed you’ll be able to move it. Then Abby can walk around it and if you get bad weather, you can move it to protect the garden.
This is a really great idea!!!! He could move it to more sunny areas as long as it can fit through the gate.
@@heatherfahsbender6583 thank you! I was thinking the same thing about moving it for more sun too.

Love it

I’m excited for you!! I think Pricilla will like the quail once it’s set up. Love the raised beds idea 👍🏻 good call dad
Hear me out . Bees?
I mean, I am an experienced bee keeper (23 years ago)

Cow poop and chicken poop are one of the best for fertilizer. I grew up on a farm. Mix with dirt

Hello beautiful Maass family ❤️ 😘
You can gather the leaves put in storage bin and they will break down for use as compose
Ah ha!!!, Mama’s gardening blood runs through your veins!!!! Well done Asa maybe raised beds made from skids be good too.
I hope you guys are having an amazing day. I love watching your videos.

Abby gardening again love it
What a perfect space for it.😊
Hi Asa,You probably should pull those two little trees out while you can. They will grow and ruin your fence.
A nice piece of side yard, loving the ideas of raised beds, shed etc. Yes I agree your mom would be the best to give you some ideas or suggestions. Blessings.
Good video. Abby is sweet
I love this! I can't wait to watch the progress! I want to grow our own fruits and veggies too. Hubby isn't as into it.❤❤

Epic Gardens on YT is a great resource for homestead projects and materials. How cool would a collab be!
What a great idea 😁 and I'm sure your mom can give you ideas too she's Amazing 😍

Cambriea & Bobby have Quail (they're here on yt) here in Volusia County. Maybe they would be helpful? Iam excited for this new journey!!

you have a big property! i didn't know you had that huge space behind your kitchen area. and that other area where the dogs poop!
You sound more southern while you’re doing yard work specifically 😂
I noticed that too!
I know this is way off topic Asa but your country voice comes out alot on this channel.
Hey why don’t you grow cucubitaceae. It’s a natural loofah. I think it’s in the pumpkin family. The day program my brother use to have a green house and they grew them and would sell them and plants of course. They are great for several different things. Just a thought.
Our Button quail laid on the ground my husband had them on the bottom of our bird flight.
Nice job, Asa! From a fellow ADHDer, I suggest a good quail hyperfocus! 😂😂
Quail are fine if raising for meat but for eggs chickens and ducks are best 👍🏻
Hold on... are you vacuuming the yard? 😂 I freaking love you all!
Yeah, have you never seen a leaf vac? It’s great for shredding leaves
@@moremaass I know I need to look into getting one!!!! 🤭🤗
Question: Why Quail? Why not rabbits? Or pheasants or chickens? But yes, you will need to revise the box.
the southern accent is sneaking into this one
It does that sometimes lol
🌸 💙💙💙
You should get rabbits. Their poop is incredible fertilizer. They sre super sweet. I also have friends that breed rabbits for meat for emergencies on their homestead. You already have the hutch!
but rabbits don't lay eggs and I'm not interested in butchering for meat
@@moremaass true story. An egg laying rabbit would be a site thats for sure.
You mean thats not where Cadbury eggs come from?? 😂

I’m 5’2’’ and I’m 50. 😂😂😂
I'm 4'11 haha my Dad calls me shortcake 😂
If I heard right, she's around five feet tall or something like that. So, roughly average for a woman.
Hi from 1stie
Hello Roz
Is this an old video or just now ?
But where are the pups going to go potty now?
This isn’t where they go to the bathroom.
I want to see it being powerwashed
QUAIL - worst bird. They hate noise, they hate disturbance. My sister tried - she lives in rural UK countryside. They would literally kill themselves with the smallest abnormality. If you want to go small - go Bantam Chickens
