  • How to Get In and Out of an Inflatable Kayak From a Bank, Pontoon or Jetty!
    Getting in and out is often one of the biggest challenges new paddlers face. Here's how I do it without falling in :)
    I'll show you in a Blueborn Coasteer SRE240, an Intex Challenger K1 and the Story Drop Stitch 1 Person inflatable kayaks.

    Yesterday was the maiden voyage of our Sea Eagle 385ft. 1st time kayak owners. Previous kayak experiences were all launched from a beach (borrowed or rented).
    We knew we’d be departing from a dock. Found your video, watched it once, went to the launch and successfully embarked and disembarked on our first attempts with no one in the water. Went very smooth.
    The paddle on the Matanzas River (Florida Intercoastal, South of St. Augustine) was quite enjoyable as well!
    Thanks for your video!

      Glad I could help! Incidentally, if you're getting in from a shallow bank i.e. you're in the water with the boat, one of the easiest ways is to straddle it, one leg either side, then just squat slowly into the seat and pop your legs in. Otherwise follow a similar procedure to this, hands on either side, lower your bum in, then one leg and the other :)

    I have a drop stitch kayak and I always find something to tie it to getting in and out. Makes it very stable and so much easier. Also lying flat and rolling can help as it distributes the weight and there is less rocking of the boat.

    This is something I had trouble with when I first got mine; not helped by the fact I was doing it on high banks on a river which is always going to be harder than a canal. I once saw a video of someone using their paddles by laying them just behind them and using them as a stabilizer but I haven't tried that method yet. Your way looks far more simple so thanks for the tips.

    • @MoreThanJustaCleaner
      @MoreThanJustaCleaner  3 роки тому +4

      Cheers. It's about getting a feel for the boat and where your weight is. And it's also about knowing where you are and committing to the movement. I found the more I dithered, the messier my technique was - does that make sense?

    Can you demonstrate from beach and from higher pier? From a pier, I find myself taking a dip

    • @MoreThanJustaCleaner
      @MoreThanJustaCleaner  3 роки тому +1

      Oddly enough I did a beach this weekend. Easiest way I found was to straddle the boat, squat into the seat with your legs dangling over the side, then pop them in.
      As for the pier question - I can't say I've done it. I've disembarked up a ladder by the side of the Foss in York but I had ropes front and back which I tied to the ladder first to secure the craft in place.

    In my - admittedly somewhat limited - experience, it's much easier to get in and out of an inflatable kayak from a bank/pontoon/jetty than it is to do it from standing in the shallow sea at the shore on a calm morning

    • @MoreThanJustaCleaner
      @MoreThanJustaCleaner  3 роки тому

      Haha I'm inclined to agree. Although getting in on the sea is much easier if you straddle the craft and squat into the seat 👍😀

    Are dropstich kayaks better bar none or what are the advantages?

    • @MoreThanJustaCleaner
      @MoreThanJustaCleaner  2 роки тому

      They tend to glide better on water due to their rigidity and are better for covering distance. It also makes it easier for carrying camping kit.
      In general I'd say low pressure, wide beam crafts feel more stable because, well they're generally wider.
      It really depends what you want to use it for...

      The pros and cons list would be quite extensive i think.

    • @robertd9850
      @robertd9850 2 роки тому +1

      No. I tried a friend's Sea Eagle Razorlite that he wanted to sell. It is less stable but faster. While I was on the water, one of the seams developed a leak. I was able to get back in but I have heard more than one reviewer talk about the seam leak issue with these. To their credit, Sea Eagle replaced the boat.

    one question not related to how to get in a kayak, but do you actually need a license to use these? as I've read online that going on say a canal and river trust waterway they require users to have a license. how true is it?

    • @MoreThanJustaCleaner
      @MoreThanJustaCleaner  2 роки тому

      That's a good question and yes. Although you can buy one that covers you for most of the British waterways 👍😁
