- Xbox has had a hard time with mixed messaging lately and while the latest Xbox news has been exciting, I hope they keep building hype. There has been a lot of weird messaging lately that has them saying one thing and doing another that has had fans upset for weeks. Here's my plea for Xbox to start making sense and to stop with the messaging that makes them sound like they're constantly operating from a challenging place. Get us hyped again.

A great video Destin, I've been playing Xbox since the OG Xbox to the Series X and it's always been my preferred place to play, I do own a PS5 and Steam Deck but most of what I own are on the Xbox eco system. Whilst I don't always agree with what you are saying, I do feel there isn't consistency in what Phil is saying and for me personally there are things I've been disappointed about this generation.
So here’s the situation as I see it, with no intended disrespect for anyone.
- Xbox has told us their strategy and they’ve stuck to it. Moreover, they’ve just said they’re profitable and fiscally sustainable in expediting that strategy. Yes, sometimes top level executive messaging (gaming for everybody, exclusives are not sustainable or desirable, Xbox’s core brand identity is as a set of services, not a single platform, we’re commmited to guiding our brand through future generations of both new hardware AND software and service delivery models with a portfolio approach) is muddled a bit by lower level marketing excess (meanwhile, while we get to our desired strategy, we’ve got some exclusives for you). Marketing is always on autopilot. Their job is to sell games, not to debate or reveal strategy. And until they get specific instructions to change things up, they’ll just keep selling games the way they’ve been doing it for a long while. That’s not mixed messaging. That’s just how large siloed organizations work.
- PlayStation has recently told us, albeit buried in a lot of corpo speak, they need to reassess their strategy from the ground up, their current business model either isn’t profitable or is rapidly becoming unprofitable, their prioritization of sales growth over sustainable performance is killing them, their costs are out of control, their average revenue per console user and their attach rates are abysmal, and change is in the cards. They haven’t told us how they’re going to change yet, except that cross platform on PC is going to be a key part of it, but we’re only 9 days into the current management regime, so they likely don’t know yet themselves. No doubt, they’re having crisis meetings all over their organization to work it out, and we’ll likely hear from them by the end of the year what their future plans are. Marketing is on autopilot, blissfully unresponsive to all of this drama, as it is at Xbox. Because that’s marketing’s job.
- Failing to respond to fanboys, pundits and social media influencers with their preconceptions and conspiracy theories isn’t mixed messaging. It’s just prudent management. Your strategic messaging isn’t confused just because your fanboys and the competitor’s fanboys aren’t paying attention and making up their own narratives. They’ll always do that no matter what. Ignore them and move on.

@@benjamincurtis1412 :) Well, not so much over promise (however they have a legacy of breaking promises - remember the "we believe in generations" thing?), but I was more referring to the under delivering - which is why my PS5 pretty much because a dust collected within weeks of purchasing (and I was a day one preorder).
Don't even get me started on the disaster that is the PSVR2....
My point is, whilst it is fun to rag on Microsoft for the current mixed messages and lack of (apparent) direction they have, Sony (and to a lesser extent Nintendo) are no better.

@@saesang352 Lol, YES, that is EXACTLY the point I was making. PSVR2 was worse than anything Microsoft has ever done since it costs a small fortune, many of us (including myself) invested in it and then it gave you NOTHING - not a SINGLE game that makes the system worthwhile.

For one Xbox has exclusive stuff as well and even more exclusive stuff if you played at launch. Also This game has been out since 2018 are you that upset over an older title adding other players… I play sea of thieves and having a ship set doesn’t do anything… Xbox had the same and it can’t be used or bought by PlayStation players… do you even play this game or do you just cry about older games?

@@FighterChamp. only issue I have with things is that their shouldn't be any exclusive content at all for playstation. As for old games going to playstation I am fine with it as long as old playstation games also come to xbox...you simply dont give your games away with no games gained for your own gamers

The leaked MS emails literally explained that he has a cult following, with Phil himself saying that The fan base will "evangelize" anything he says... They literally called their fanbase "cult like" and they're still defending him, proving he was 100% correct 😂
Phil has fullfilled many of my wishes at least. Now when we will still get COD and Crashbandicoot to game pass this year, Im quite content.
Xbox has always had messy messaging.
I think it's time to clear it up a bit.

That statement is categorically false. Xbox has been bad with messaging since the Xbox One. They were very aggressive and transparent with the OG and 360 and trailed off since they've been doing damage control during the One and SX era.

It’s unfortunate but they are a publicly traded company, their focus isn’t to make things make sense to us as fans. Shareholders are their number one priority and focus.

If you are acting treating your fan base that there concerns are secondary, then people are just going to go somewhere else. Which a lot of people already are. the only other option is to shift to just a software company. I personally dont care where i play games -- alot of my favorite experiences this year have been third party. Hell, Playstation straight up said they are not out putting exclusives out this year, yet they still managed to publish a few.

Comparatively PS has not had to do much PR. Xbox is constantly trying to correct their errors and explain what means what. Like Green said, Jim Ryan said 2 things and they were stupid as all hell.
Last place Sony has zero games all gen to compete so nothing to talk about other than Sony's daily L's and being the most anti-consumer company on the planet.

Helldivers 2 is killing it, Stellar Blade is selling like hotcakes (zero games?). These are facts. Okay, sure, you like Xbox. That doesn't mean you can just invent your own reality about what's happening. To have a conversation you actually have to use facts and speak from reality because you're not even close to that.

Fundamentally a huge problem is that the flagship Xbox Series X is routinely not a better place to play Xbox games than the entry level Series S and when people point that out they're told to play on PC
Its hard to believe they care about the future of Xbox if they cant even make their games play better on their own hardware

Xbox doesn’t seem to understand that the message they’re sending is they don’t believe in their own brand. See the plan through. Don’t get second thoughts before you even really begin. Build your brand back up with conviction.
I think the pressure comes from somewhere above. Phil dont own xbox or Microsoft. ABK deal was crazy expensive and they need to show investors that they are making the money back and every year more growth and more profits. More, more more all the time and faster $$$...new models of phone, cars, games, computers every year...which needs to sell.
Business in capitalistic societies creates lots of pressure for those who runs or leads them but also for consumers. Everything is so short lasting and short shighted.

For me its allmost feel that Phil and xbox team has or at least had big visions but cant straight forwardly go for it. If they didnt/dont hit their end year goals, they might be pressured to do something differently from above or because investors start to drop out. Thats why the confusing messaging. But who knows...

That kind of funny podcast was very telling about the mindset of xbox. Phil made it clear they were very aware and ok about being number 3. He said they dont focus on trying to put out 10 out of 10s. That they can look at a game and be happy with a 6. That blew my mind because not every game has to be a big AAA game to be good. It can be a lower budget or smaller scale game and still be a hit.
The weakness of Series S and Game Pass basically guaranteed mid and underpowered games. There's going to be a low profit ceiling due to Game Pass, and the Series S needs to be able to run it so 10/10 powerhouses are unlikely.

@@TheTomorrowProject I don’t think those things attribute to their stance on being complacent with producing quality games. Because with that mindset there could be no good games from generations prior. They have unlimited money and powerful consoles, they could still put out bangers on a budget. The issue lies with them saying we are ok with making a game that reviews at a 6, promise features in games and never deliver like with halo infinite, or put out totally busted unfinished games like redfall. Hell even starfield was missing basic features like a map. I’m hoping that this changes and games like Indiana jones, gears 6 and fable slap tho. I think their focus on keeping employees happy and being inclusive as opposed to having talented programmers and creative writers is hindering their their output of quality.

Don't worry, their next blog or podcast will make everything clear, with more doublespeak, open ended statements and slogans that can mean anything and contradictory subsequent interviews. But at least their balance sheets have huge numbers on them and they have great legal victories left and right, which is what gamers are here for.

Same here, I saw writing on the wall after I bought that stupid xbox one x bc of the promises Phil was spewing ... I wasted $500 for absolutely nothing and I abandoned the brand immediately. Here we are again as xbox is using the same blueprint with Series X, over promising and then under delivered just to get your money ... Nah not this time Phil, nice try tho...

You need to make sense. You sit there and say they shouldn’t have exclusives but great exclusives are what drives console sales but are complaining about their purchases because there’s nothing for Xbox but it’s because they are putting all their games on every other console.

Billion dollar moves are far from a new concept. I'd argue the tech inside the engines driving the games are more valuable than the studios themselves. Microsoft didn't buy game studios, they bought technology. As awesome and superior that IDtech engine is (doom eternal engine) are they making halo 7 with it? Nope they're using UR5. They buy game engines to kill them.
Sounds like things just changed due to circumstances and we’re acting like we don’t understand that.
I think that the Xbox business update should be a regular thing, like twice a year to update Xbox players about where things are and where they are going. Having said that, I think one part of that meeting that often gets overlooked is when Phil talked about releasing games on other platforms that don’t hurt the Xbox.

Yes, thank you Destin. This is the center of the frustration many of us have with Xbox leadership & their branding/messaging lately. I know theres some crazy console-warriors out there, over-reacting to every bit of news.. but the last 2-3 years, it feels like constant whiplash or muddied waters, when Xbox leadership makes public statements. It was getting so tiring that so many were trying to gaslight us into believing that this was "always the way Xbox was gonna go, its been clear as day!".. when infact, there was plenty to point to, to show that Xbox has been all over the map lately.

They should focus on more AA than AAA and give more creative freedom and more output. I don't care for the big budget third person interactive movies that reviewers and normies seem to love. I want the creativity to come back to games as well as greater output in the middle. There should be more between indies and AAA.
Creative freedom is why xbox is still getting 30 fps games when it is the "strongest" console. Redfall, starfeild and now hellblade 2 are all 30 fps. There needs to be some sort of standard in there games. Also them porting games to other consoles created such a stigma now. Even other reviewers and journos are saying shit like they will wait for the PS port of games instead of playing it on xbox.
February was the most embarrassing month I’ve ever seen for Xbox in all my years of gaming. Not only did PlayStation get like 5 or 6 exclusives, but MS started giving Sony its own exclusives, while those of us in the Xbox ecosystem got absolutely nothing in return. Not to mention the apology tour that Phil had to go on to explain the business changes.

Thank you Destin! You are literally the nicest commentator on Xbox's behalf. If you of all people is saying this, then truly they have an issue they need to address. Microsoft has lost the plot in terms of engaging the gaming audience and Phil can't keep his stories straight. As much as people think Phil has been good for Xbox he hasn't had a single release or cultivated anything reaching atmosphere of mainstream success that Xbox had during the 360 era.

It’s such a slap in the face having spent as much as I have in purposely getting all my games on Xbox because it’s my preferred platform and the one I want support the most only to see those games that make the platform alluring be handed to other platforms that won’t send their great games to Xbox in return. Might be good for investors but investors don’t buy and play your games Xbox and Microsoft, you should remember that.
That's why no more game should go to playstation till playstation starts porting games to xbox... even Phil made it known that he would have liked helldivers on xbox.. giving your games only works if your gamers also gain games from the other platforms... cause doing so with no gain for your own gamers only results in your platform dying while the others thrive it's simply bad business

The only thing they’ve made sense on recently is that, they’re fully onboard the DEI train. That should count for something, right.

I don't like how he's conviently been selected with Phil's words, especially about Bestheda. I research myself. Phil went on to clarified in another article that of course all of Bestheda games won't be exclusive. But he I guess whatever get you the views.

I had to unfollow Ryan Mcaffery for the same reasons and I followed him for years. Phil needs to step down
If Phil steps down then you're really not going to like what happens to the Xbox brand. Phil is the one keeping it together. Maybe you'd like a Tim Ryan clone so that profits start to shrink and Microsoft decides to pull out of gaming.

They announce a team specialized in BC, then one week later they announce the future closing of X360, out of 2000 games only 400 are BC, it is still better than the competition, but the thing is they say one thing but they do exactly the opposite while launching nothing new and exciting.

I like Xbox, but the over promising and under delivering is a huge problem. Maybe Phil needs someone to help him with messaging. SONY is much better with this.

Nobody needs ps5 pro for remakes or 3rd party timely exclusive indies like rise of ronin.
Xbox has made much more big moves and took action and delivered in past few years than Sony.

Gamepass is still amazing, xbox delivered 11 first party games last year and many more games are on making and like last year this year too will start to come out from spring onward etc. What are u expecting... god coming to fullfill all your dreams?
And Sony delivered nothing last year other than Spiderman 2. This year only 1 first party, those 3 others are 3rd party timely exclusives. Rest of the year nothing. At least it will now start to bring all its games to Steam... good for other gamers :)
@susanna8612 like I said. I like Xbox. I have bought every single console they have released. I have even purchased some for my family. Gamepass is a really good service. I pay for mine and have purchased a years worth subscriptions for my two siblings. To me, it's bad timing as a consumer to release games on other consoles after studios have been purchased, and the promise of exclusive games has yet to reach its full potential. I am just saying my opinion. Redfall was a disappointment, and we are still waiting on Fable, and perfect dark. I think Sony's plan is not as consumer friendly, but it is good for their business. Xbox has been ahead of the curve, and for the most part, consumers have not appreciated it. I even liked the Kinect. I think it's important to recognize the potential the xbox brand has. To do that, they have to recognize the areas of opportunity. The messaging is not good, and there are many instances of delays. I want to see them succeed.
Yeah Xbox lost my business with their backwards communication and performance about 2 years ago, I was such a die hard too.

THANK YOU!!!!!! This needed to be posted! Sometimes It's like Phil knows he's in the gaming business but isn't observant about things like quality, consumer needs/wants, and updates on what teams are working on. Sometimes it feels like Microsoft is saying, "We have and make games!" but it's painfully obvious to everyone that Forza, Starfield, and Redfall needed more time to be polished and should have been in development years ago. Everything Phil is doing is reactive and not proactive. I don't understand the need to spend billions on studios when those funds could go toward shaping studios and improving the output of games. We all knew that Microsoft was going to be stonewalled by Japanese developers. The whole point of an American console was to change the landscape and make sure that the biggest market would start getting top-shelf products, and those gamers would be put first. Since the Xbox One, Microsoft was been crossing its fingers and hoping games end up on the platform.

Xbox has been all over the place since the start of this year. As a long time XBox fan I have, for the moment, given up on them and have started buying all my games on other platforms that actually PROMOTE their platform (I own all major consoles and do so every gen). Xbox has quickly become the platform that has absolutely no identity and no reason to own. Hopefully they sort themselves out and decide if they WANT to be a platform.... or just a publisher releasing on other platforms.

Only if you follow these you tube dramas. But if you just own xbox and enjoy playing games this gen and backward compatiple and gamepass... nothing has changed for you. My bought digital library is stored in external hardrive which can be played offline too, so I can allways play them. I would not be able to play them with PS or PC. And dont even own them.
Xbox is not my identity, I love Series consoles with backward compatipility and fast return facility, controller, my games from 360 times to this and Gamepass has been good. I have got more than enough for my money.
I dont care about exclusivity, all games from all platforms could and should be in all consoles.
Then people like u who buys consoles o ly because of exclusives would not need to waste money to buy every freaking system. Nobody has time to even play that much... and I at least have other uses for my savings
Like you, it’s all about the ecosystem that makes Xbox or Gamepass make sense, especially for the cost.
At least we have games, what does it matter if they put it on all the consoles and PCs? Exclusive games are not good for anyone, for example, Play Station spent a lot of money on Spider-Man and did not receive any profits.
Personally I’m sick and tired of the mixed messages, the 3 steps forward 2 steps back, I’ve had enough of waiting and I’ve been waiting over a decade it’s put up or shut up time now. I’ve personally god rid of my Xbox console and moved to pc and ps5, As an Xbox user of 20 years who now feels like a second class citizen I had enough. I think I’ve been more than patient. Their marketing over here in the U.K. is atrocious 95 percent of my friends have a PlayStation, it’s embarrassing that the flaws are coming from a trillion dollar company. I still have access to all Xbox games via my pc and get to play at higher frames etc so I’m not loosing out there at all. I gotta do what’s right by me and currently that means not owning an Xbox console.

Destin was supporting this decision and doing damage control for Microsoft but changed his tune after seeing Xbox community's low morale.
I do think its crazy that Phil said that about great games. I am a HUGE Xbox fan! I did end up buying a PS5 also because of the games that they have - great games! You might not be able to convert people entierly, given peoples library investments in a specific ecosystem, however, you are sure going to pull a ton of people over to feel the GREENER grass on the other side.
All these comments from Phil are genuine but when the Microsoft overlords demand XBOX starts making more money, anything is on the table.
Perhaps if the media did a better job, we would be clear on things. It often feels like Jason Schrier is the only journalist out there other than bloggers and influencers. I think you guys should be out there at Redmond demanding answers if you really want it instead of waiting or expecting a publicly traded company to come out telling you, their plans.
Omg I completely forgot about Perfect Dark. The biggest problem for Xbox these last 2 generations has been over promising on games, while not delivering on said games. Phil seems more focused on expanding the brand, rather than strengthening the brand.
He wants 100 million game pass subscribers 😂😂. US getting invaded by China and Russia sounds more believable than that.

Hi Destin, what is your perspective on Xbox building a sub tech studio that could service the other studios and build a game engine for example. They acquired and have a lot of talent in this field (idtech, slipspace). They could even license it out.
The entire industry is changing, and they know it's not going to be easy for the faithful diehards of their brands to accept it. There's no more budget to keep game exclusive. The demand for quality by the consumer, as well as consumer habits on where they play and how they purchase games, has driven this change. The entire industry is shifting and Xbox is at the forefront because they are the ones that need to change more than their competitors right now. Its only a matter of time though.
That’s essentially what is happening. Millennials and older are having a hard time accepting that it’s 2024.

That can be true. But Xbox needs to stop saying one thing, and then saying another internally or in an interview a few days later. Just be clear and concise and let the world react how they may.

Consoles sales do not mean anything if you’re not selling games. Sony couldn’t even make money off Spider-Man because of budget issues and they sell insane amounts of consoles. Something has to give.
@@DestinL True but I think they don’t know the exact answer themselves. They are in a volatile position where they know they need to change but they also know the consequences. Which is why Phil even said ‘A case by case basis’ when he was asked about game exclusivity.

I often wonder how many console sales were lost just under their chaotic naming schemes?
I think they want to start releasing all of their exclusives on other platforms, but they are scared to just come out and say it because they know they are going to lose a portion of their die hard fans. So they are gradually trying to ease into it which is creating the confusion in their messaging.
There is only one thing XBOX must do ....

Not an Xbox guy (not an anyone guy I have all consoles and PC) and while I’m not super psyched about Xbox’s plans but in the name of being positive I’m still very intrigued for Avowed. It’s not visually distinct but then tbh neither was New Vegas and that game was gold

I think we’ve got a couple different factions inside of Microsoft trying to do different things and Phil is kinda in the middle of it. I think Phil might have made some promises to the board and nadella in order to get activision
I 100% agree with that statement. I just commented on a different comment. Look at what Microsoft is doing and you can figure out where Xbox is going.
Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox One X… Xbox making sense? That ship sailed long ago.
(All they had to do was publicise development of the 1st console and name the prototype “Xbox” and show it around in public but then tweak its appearance or HDD or any other tiny detail and name the final release “Xbox2” and stayed in-step with Sony.
But instead of that super simple move, a committee got together in the boardroom and everyone had 4 shots of goofy juice and then came up with THE dumbest naming convention on any iterative device, clothing, vehicle, game console or just anything that is or ever has been iterative in the entire history of mankind.
It demonstrated right from the start that there was a seam of silly corporate nonsense running through the development of an otherwise great bunch of consoles and it demonstrated an insecurity around PlayStation already being up to PS2 when the first Xbox came out.
So insecure that they wouldn’t even use numbers to name their consoles.
The 3rd and 4th consoles had “one” in their names. You can’t get more stupid than that.
I love my PlayStations and my Xboxes, I love bespoke machines, but this meant a public perception of silliness and of Xbox always playing catch-up.

I think they should make an Xbox Arcade Handheld and an Xbox Elite Console. Xbox arcade has all 360 and OG games they can get with tons of indies, and exclusive indies, along with access of your library of supported games. And a Xbox Elite, a powerful PC box for your TV with a great Xbox app. Then continue the support of ROG ally and others. And make all games exclusive except Activision games going forward.
Why not tell people about paying more about Gamepass? Because suddenly those games will cost more.
Great video Destin. I’ve said it before but I’ve been an Xbox owner since the original console. I have stopped buying content on the platform. The messaging has been terrible. I’ve switched and it will take Xbox’s actions to win me back. Only exclusive and compelling games will bring me back. I don’t understand why they don’t understand that.

This is exactly where I been trying to come from. You put it in a better way than I can say. I have people thinking Im not an Xbox fan when I game only on the Box and PC.
I think it's the differing visions between the Xbox leadership and the Microsoft leadership. They aren't on the same page.
I wouldn't say there aren't on the same page but probably more of Microsoft looking for return on investment. For example they want to be on billions of devices, you won't get there just with the console not even console and pc market. Microsoft in big into AI, yet on the console/gaming side people don't even want to accept AI for gaming. You just got to look at what Microsoft is doing to know what to expect from Xbox. My last example is Microsoft is on everyones platform including the competition. Xbox say you should be able to play anywhere and on any device. I mean how many hints do people need. So all of this stuff happening and the rumors aren't surprising to me. They've been telegraphing it for awhile now.
Xbox fans rather receive less than nothing at all .. I don't blame them at this point 🗣
I've been an Xbox first guy (have them all, primarily play on PC), but I can't agree with this more. I'm a Systems Admin that lives in the MS ecosystem and I can tell you that MS in the business world is the same. Mixed messages, left hand not talking to the right, changing strategies mid lifecycle, etc etc. I don't think this is a Phil issue as it's an overall Xbox issue. Maybe they would be better if they were spun off of MS, but then they don't have the MS wallet to back them up...
The Activision Blizzard purchase changed everything for Xbox when it came to expectations. Its was so massive it has now put a giant spotlight on the Xbox division. Massive revenue and growth are now expected from the top brass and they can't deliver it just through their console and PC alone. I agree they need to be totally blunt about what's going to happen.

I like how Phil said exclusives won't change anything whilst at the same time paying £70bn so they can make some exclusives. Then a random AA game called Helldivers 2 comes out and everyone on Earth is playing it...
And the thing about Gamepass is it's all based on the assumption that gamers play many games in order for it to be good value. Most gamers play the same 2-3 games all year round. I've never seen the benefit of Gampass because of that. Throwing money away every month. People are also sick of subscription models. Look how much we have to pay out now on Amazon Prime, D+, Netflix etc.

The only reason I bought an Xbox 6 years ago was because I had friends in school who had Xbox, now at 21 and some of my friends don’t play, glad I bought a ps5 for my games and Xbox for some cross progression games just to play with my friends, I don’t give a crud about exclusives but PS has some fun games
This is EXACTLY how I feel! Well said Destin. My thought is commit to exclusives because the more exclusive that are on Xbox the more the other side gets curious and come see what's going on on the other side of the fence. Right now PlayStation seems to have the mentality that hey let's just wait those games will eventually come our way anyways right? All the while PlayStation is keeping everything exclusive to their console except for a few games going to PC. I get that we need change in order to make gaming grow but I feel like this is not the way
Xbox players want games like helldivers 2 and stellar blade. But they get starfield and redfall. Hellblade was a pretty but long art gallery but the gameplay was errrr an afterthought. If 343 is not working on odst helldroppers than it’s another fail for 343 and Phil.
