Some English mistakes I have made to make you feel better:
-I thought colonel and kernel were two separate ranks in the military (navy? army? I don't know the distinctions). I thought colonel was pronounced "Col-en-el".
-I was 21 before I realized I had spelled and pronounced the word "revelation" as "relevation".
-I until last spring I have always said "RVSP" instead of "RSVP".
-I thought the idiom "for all intents and purposes" was "for all intensive purposes"
I hope that makes people feel better about their own mistakes.
Spiffleh I thought it was "For all intensive purposes" as well, my family speak quite fast so I always heard it wrong even though they were saying it right

colonel one i didnt know how to pronounce either also hard as hail i thought everyone was saying hell lol we all trip up when it comes to languages
I didn't realize I said the word "coconut" with the north Texan "r" until I was in high school & my boyfriend pointed it out (he thought it was funny that was the only part of Southern that was in my speech pattern). So, I basically said "KOH-kur-nut" for my first 18 yrs.
Intensive purposes is an eggcorn :) Lots of funny eggcorns out there!
English may have some insane spellings, but I will always be grateful that I only had to memorise 26 base characters. Kanji has so many different characters, it's no wonder people make mistakes!
Only 26? What about the naturally confusing differences between upper and lower case? The way A and a look pretty different? G and g? When I was quite young I found F and E a little confusing and I understand how D becomes d, but then shouldn't lower case B have two little loops?. And no love for thorn, eth, yogh and ethel? Wait. Who names a character ethel?

I don't remember how much difficulty I had learning upper case, but they are different enough that they can count. 52, then :) My first major struggle was with my original middle name (Louise). That was way too many vowels in a row for my poor little kindergarten brain to handle haha.
I've never even heard of those four. I just looked up yogh and Google says it's Middle English, not in our current alphabet, so no, I'm afraid that in Australia we don't use that one. It is pretty though.

Sorrow, I like all the consonants in your original middle name. ;) I've always found thorn interesting because it still gets used in modern English in a sort of weird way, showing up in names like "Ye Olde Coffee Shoppe", where the "ye" is a very old way of typesetting Þe, that's thorn followed by e if you can't see it, pronounced "The". Strange huh? I don't think that Olde and Shoppe are real words though. People think the "Ye" is an olde ;) form of You.

It's not a kanji mistake, but I always mess up 殺める (murder) and 謝る (apologize) when I'm speaking. I've gotten some awkard stares from that...

I don't know what kind of conversation are you having but i think the "murder" part (Even when pronounced correctly) will still make people stares at you awkwardly (Maybe teriffied too)

Atleast your not as dumb as my friend, she asked our history teacher(cause we were learning about like the old and ancient people) "Was water a thing back then?" cause the class asked stuff like "were *insert a modern thing here* trending? Did they use it? Etc etc"

heteronyms, homonyms, and homophones can give you a lot of examples. Also words that a lot of people read buy rarely say so when they say them it's the wrong pronunciation (example: "epitome" as epi-tome instead of epi-tomy)

Not only is English a composite of languages of many different languages (Romance Languages (French, Latin, etc), Germanic (Saxon, Some of the Gaelic languages and old Norse), Welsh, Norman (French by way of Vikings), Greek and even a smattering of High Egyptian), English has many contemporary spelling and phrasing variations (UK English, US English, and my personal favorite Australian -Bloody-English). Not to mention that the way English was spoken and written has mutated explosively over the past few centuries (S's were written as F's for a really long time) in comparison Japanese. If you look at it that way it's a huge ask, if you look at it from the cute friendly normal view it's not as bad.
Fun fact: The necessity to specify relative age between relatives that's built into the Japanese language can backfire in unexpected ways. For example, what if you're translating a book from a language that doesn't specify this information?
In the first Harry Potter book there's a sentence that goes "Mrs. Potter was Mrs. Dursley's sister, ..."
Which word would you use? 姉 - older sister, or 妹 - younger sister? I suppose the translator could have reworded the sentence, using the word 姉妹 - sisters, to get around the problem, but she didn't. Instead she had a guess and got it wrong. J.K. Rowling clarified in a later book that Petunia was the older sister, and the mistake was corrected in later editions of the Japanese version.
Consequently, I have a paperback edition that says
「ポッター婦人はダーズリー婦人の実の姉だが、。。。」
and an e-book from PotterMore that goes
「ポッター婦人はダーズリー婦人の実の妹だが、。。。」

@@issecret1 Some languages have different words for younger or older brothers and sisters, others don't. I speak (or understand) more languages and I like changing subtitles and audio for movies to different languages to see how the translation deals with certain situations. For example Call Me by Your Name is a movie where 4 languages are spoken in the original: French, Italian, English and a little German. It's very interesting to see how they tried to replicate the same international atmosphere of the movie while they had to replace one language with another.
For Japanese movies I need to use English sub and I often feel that something went wrong in translation. For example in Your Name when she is in his body and she uses the wrong personal pronoun - for the body. You only understand that scene if you know a little Japanese.
What if your uncle is the twin of your parent, so they're exactly the same age? Would you then use 叔 or 伯?

He says it doesn't matter if they're twins; one of them has to come out first. Good lord I can't imagine having to have a different kanji applied to you just because you were born two minutes before or after your sibling lol.

I tried to learn Japanese. I memorised the hiragana "alphabet" and tried the katakana too, but after i saw the kanji i gave it up.

You only need kanji to read/write, not speak it so as long as you know Hiragana, you can always learn the language using apps/books that only use hiragana. It's just like in English, if someone says: Bore, Boar, Boor - it's all about context. So long as you know what is being talked about, you don't need to know the kanji for each correct word.
For conversational Japanese, you don't need kanji. I'm almost 2 years into learning Japanese on my own and I've only recently started learning Kanji but that's because I'm going to Japan in a year for vacation so I'd like to know how to read signs :P
Trust me, not knowing kanji isn't the end of the world. Japanese students only start learning kanji in middle school so think of all the children who can speak Japanese w/o kanji. So you can too :)

I always thought that, but kanji is not that hard if you take it easy... I'm having classes in an online course PT-JP called Nihongo Kakumei and it has been the best thing to me... Don't think about kanji in the begging, it comes naturally.
I use duolingo to learn Japanese it's quite good although I have basicly finished all the lessons it teaches u harigana and then works u up after that
As a Chinese reading "Kanji" (漢語 or HanYu is what we call) since birth, it's really confusing because there are many, and I mean MANY words that are similar like 己 and 已 or 微 and 徽… so you're not alone if you get confused
P.S. Please do not attack me by saying Kanji is different from Chinese writings because they are similar just in different languages…

I speak English and Spanish and use the “autocorrect” option on my phone just in case if I don’t know how to write a certain word, especially since in Spanish you have accents and marks(?), it’s really helpful. I got way better at writing when I started using my keyboard more. Looking at my screen all the time, especially when I’m reading.

These are actually imported words from Chinese. That’s why I can still get the sense of Japanese without knowing every word, which is really helpful when I play games like kancolle~

Interesting! I'm mainland Chinese, I think 完璧 came from the ancient phrase or story '完璧归赵’ (I protected the jade perfectly and returned home) , in 283BC, there was this general who proposed to save a city by offering his opponent in the war this piece of jade, but his enemy set him up. But he finally got out with nothing lost, and returned the perfect jade to his own king. 璧 basically means a piece of treasured jade, as there's 玉(jade) at the bottom. By the way, in Mandarin we use 完美， and only see peopl use 完璧 within the phrase.
English isn't my first language, and I thought for the LONGEST time that Arkansas was pronounced "AR-kansas" as well. The first time I heard someone say it out loud I was incredibly confused lol. But apparently it's because the name is French in origin.
A LOT of names are either French in origin, or from one of the Native American languages. @.@ It took me a lot longer than it should have to learn how to pronounce the city Oconomowoc...and I don't live far from it. XD
A lot of inconsistencies come from the fact that English has so many different influences from other languages

Fun fact about Arkansas, we pronounce the state like "ark-an-saw" but when referring to the people you actually do call them "ar-kan-seans" like you would in other states. =)

Arkansas is just...I love my home state, but there is a town, Mount Judea, which is just called "Judy" because the people naming it pulled the name out of the bible without knowing how to pronounce it. Now the young still say "Judy" because the elderly wouldn't know where we're talking about. This was a mistake made by an entire area. Your errors don't even compare, Jun :)

There's an entire story behind the word kanpeki. If you knew the story, then it's basically impossible to make this mistake.
For おじさん, in Mandarin you have three different versions, 叔叔 (father's younger brother), 伯伯 (father's older brother) and 舅舅 (mother's brother), depending on who's side the uncle is on and if he's older or younger than your parent... It was cool to see that 叔 and 伯 are also applicable in Japanese.
Michelle Wang I was going to comment the same thing. 😊 If you know Chinese, Kanji will be helpful in understanding/knowing Japanese a bit more. Although not all the time. Cause like with perfect in mandarin isn't it 完美 it's 完璧.
Jacky Chew I know they are different. But they do have some similarities. Can't deny the fact that kanji is influenced by Chinese. I just checked kanji means Chinese words. Also note, I did say a bit and not all the time. And it did help me with reading (guessing the meaning of) certain words because I know Chinese when I was trying to learn Japanese. Making use of what I already know to make learning other things easier. Guess I'm explaining myself too much. But yeah that's how it is. 😊
Jacky Chew If that's the case, with that probability I guess my grandparents would be han Chinese if they came from 福建 and 广东。But there's still that 10% probability that they might not be.
dashjbitz it really is helpful. I'm taking Japanese at school right now and there's a lot of new kanji, but it's a lot easier for me to grasp the meanings even if I don't know the pronunciation since I'm familiar with some of the characters already.

i feel like every language has to have these types of mistakes. an english mistake so many native english speakers make is “i could care less about ____” when it should really be “i couldn’t care less” since you’re trying to say how much you don’t care about something! it bothers me so much lol

I've always wanted to learn Japanese as well. I've had Japanese-American friends who told me the best way to learn is to immerse yourself in it. I found a Japanese society club near me and have thought of joining to learn the language. Another suggestion from a Japanese friend who had to learn English was do as he did: start with Japanese kids show ( like their version of Sesame Street ) and learn in the same manor as they learned. He said it worked for him.

Well, when I was younger, I accidentally wrote "raped" on my presentation instead of "wrapped" if it makes you feel any better.
When I was in tenth grade, I handed in a book report for World History class, wherein I misspelled the word "wife" every single time. Unfortunately, the book was a biography of Nero, so the word "wife" came up a number of times. The teacher marked a point off for each individual time I misspelled it.
I still think my spelling _should_ be right, because the W sound in "whife" sounds, to me, more similar to the one in "where" and "when" than the one in "water" and "wet". Maybe I'm just weird.
I'm just starting in college Japanese classes, and these videos, while the content won't really stick with me enough to help me not make similar mistakes, just watching you guys talk about Japanese and being silly (like in your guide to Japanese apartments) and all that has really helped me to relax some and not be as stressed out about learning a new language.
I've had bad luck in the past trying to learn language, so the stress has been bad, but these videos really help.

The answer is Native American languages. I'm from Alabama, and I've learned USUALLY when there is a odd spelling and/or pronunciation it's due to that word coming from a Native American language or a foreign language.

I think she overdid it a little.
Nooo how did she ever do it? This is classic Southern Belle Beauty. That orange red lip with the leopard print outfit, it made her shoulder stand out especially with that v-neck, and her hair swoop to the side. It was a very good look for and especially bold considering. Many redheads look good in certain these colors unless they know how to make some. Redheads generally look phenomenal in Greens and blues and such. She did well.
Ooh the older vs younger uncle one is really interesting to me. The same difference (with the same characters) is in Chinese too, but in Chinese they're pronounced differently, so there isn't any confusion about it.
I remember something about that Ibaragi/Ibaraki thing having something to do with "gi" referring to both ibaraki and tochigi at the same time. That some people used "Ibaragi" to reference the border area between the two prefectures.

I’m from the Navajo tribe in New Mexico and in our language the family members names can be so confusing depending on whose older or if it’s paternal/maternal. So I understand that struggle!
Your example of Arkansas/Kansas made me think of how people say Illinoisss, with an emphasis on the S. It should be a silent S and pronounced Illinoii.

You should make another video on English mistakes that English speakers make (if that wasn't already the plan). One of the things that I find really annoying is when people say "I could care less" when what they SHOULD say is "I couldn't care less."
"I could care less" means that you DO care!

There was a mistake I use to make when pronouncing 餃子 I always thought it was (Gyoko) before I found out it was pronounced as (Gyoza).
I'm learning Mandarin and a lot of Kanji are also Chinese characters, so when the words showed up on screen I was reading them in Chinese, and I was very confused for a moment when the Japanese pronunciation was said :P woops!

I'm an american and if anyone wants to know an embarrassing story about my english here's one. So I play Magic: The Gathering and a few years ago there was a new card printed called 'Scythe Leopard'. About half of the nouns in MTG card names are made up words and I've only seen the word leopard written down a hand full of times so for a full month I pronounced the card name 'Scythe LE-OH-PARD' instead of Scythe LEH-PARD.
It's the first time I see Jun this happy and excited😁maybe it's because I see his eyebrows for the first time😄love you guys anyway❤

Kanji seems so hard.
Still easier than Chinese which is what Kanji was adopted from. In chinese (Mandarin) there are like 16,000 (not sure if that is the real number but trust me there are a LOT of them) characters. By comparison Kanji (while still way too hard for me to learn) is simple.
If you use mnemonics to memorize them, it becomes easier than you might think.
It's so easy for me as a Chinese. Well, for the writing and reading, at least. I don't understand how do they sound tho.
One of my Japanese friends who's an English teacher realized a few months ago that she's been writing 完璧 with 土 instead of 玉 a few months ago. She's been working as an English teacher for over 10 years, and as you might be able to imagine, she has to write 完璧 on student reports somewhat frequently. She was really embarrassed when she realized xD.

完璧の璧という字は昔、中国の王様が家来に玉(宝玉)を無事に持ち帰れと言って家来が無事に国まで持ち帰ったことから完璧という字は完全に玉(宝玉)を持ち帰ったと言うことで玉と言う字が使われた熟語になったらしいです。
I jokingly once pronounced Arkansas as Ar-Kansas to my English friend and she was briefly so happy, thinking she'd finally discovered that saying it that way was a legitimate alternate pronunciation (because other Americans had corrected her for saying it that way.) Sadly I had to admit I was just being silly.
Obviously, the best alternate way of saying it is: Arkan-sass.

I'm a Japanese but I didn't know the right kanji for 完璧 until now lol
I have a master's degree in my mother tongue and work as a linguist and I still make so many mistakes and learn new things every day. You can ever know a language perfectly, it's a continuous journey.
I recently learned the difference between maze and labyrinth in English. Had no idea they weren't the same thing!
I remember a while ago watching a show called "The Japanese that Japanese people don't know" or something about a woman becoming a Japanese teacher and not thinking about the things that she uses every day

Not all Americans are white...I'm a mixed race, but I was born albino with some red strands of hair, which is really rare. And my hair looks pink, also I'm much paler than Rachel. Some people call me a ghost, which kinda hurts. But Rachel is so pretty!

Even if I’m half Japanese Pakistani I’m still learning Japanese and khanji is the most difficult thing to learn. 😫😫 there r lots of words that r spelled the same but the khanji is different and it depends when to use them.
