thanks for this Mike, I was going to buy a recess tool but like you could see the need to come in at an angle to avoid the center, so after watching this I just made one out off an old file works perfect and took a short time to make. Folkestone UK
@@boneyard-glasshouse-walk Be very careful. Files are known to be be brittle and crack because of all of the grooves. You might google what you can do to reduce the risk. Main thing is be aware of the risk and do not stick far off a tool rest.
Wow. I had this exact same problem (creating a dovetail with tailstock in place), and looked for a tool out there that solved the problem. Couldn't find one. My conclusion was to build my own. Great to see somebody already put together the whole working plan in this video. I'll be building "your" tool idea this week! Thank you so much.

I also shared the link to your video in the video I made. good information deserves it thank you again
After hollowing out the recess to the desired diameter and depth, I make the dovetail part of the recess with a tool that I ground from a small (~1/2") spade bit. It works for me. In fact, a set of miniature detail tools can be ground from spade bits, and you can embed a 6" extension in a wood handle for them. Look for extensions that have setscrews.
Good idea. I have two Nova chucks. One with the T handle , a G3 and one with the two bars. This video helped me a lot . I want to make the tool for the chucks. Thanks for the help.

Skew chisel works great - as long as the tailstock and live center is not in the way. If you start your bowl between centers this allows you to make a recess when a skew could not. I guess you did not watch to the 7:20 part where I illustrate this.
Appreciate the post on making the recess. I love the tenon and can get a good one made in very little time but I've always struggled getting the recess done accurately and in good time. Very helpful.
Great tool Mike, I gave you a shout out at a recent demo I gave. When it came time to mount the demo piece to the lathe I used the tool I made, and showed the group how well it can work. When I made mine I adjusted the angles a bit and shortened the business end to reduce the catches I was experiencing with the cutting end as wide as yours, I also adjusted the presentation angle so I had more of the tool shaft support on the tool rest, and of course I ground the dovetail angle to match the jaws of my chucks. Thanks again for posting the great inspirational videos.
Good video with detailed explanations...Your hand is a little too dense to see through. :) Not a problem though, I knew what you were talking about.I have a question on your dust collector seen in this video. Is that something you purchased or did you fabricate it yourself. I assume it is used while lathe sanding primarily.
+Gil Grace The actual DC is a HF 1 1/2 HP model. I replaced the bags. My bottom bag is disposable plastic bag from Jet. The top is a five foot shaker felt bag. I use a Thien baffle pre seperator to collect the larger chips.
+Mike Peace I'm sorry, I didn't make my question very clear. I was referring to the sort of square "funnel" shown just behind the bowl blank and chuck. I am attempting to make one like that from thin plywood to eliminate some of my sanding dust.

i will have to give this a try, thank you. i got the $20 box of 8 lathe tools (not high speed steel) at harbor freight might have to grab one i never use and try this out.

Sounds good. I guess you annealed it first so it would not be too brittle?

Most of us already have this tool; it's called a skew chisel. The manufacturers of several scroll chuck even recommends using it.

it looks like it would catch so easy cutting from so many areas at once, does angling the handle up catch often?
It is not far off the tool rest. I have never had a catch with it.

What are the sharpening angles (bevels) of the two cutting eges of the tool.
Somewhere between 70 and 80 deg like many typical scrapers. It is not critical as long as it is less than 90.
Show us how you grind that "Special Tool" please.
