'Song of the South'- Briar Patch Scene

- This is Day 7 of 12 - of our "Song of the South" 75th Anniversary Tribute. This Scene is a Part 3 of the "Tar Baby Scene". It features: Brer Rabbit, Brer Bear and Brer Fox. Brer Fox finally catches Brer Rabbit and is trying to decide how to kill him. Brer Rabbit uses one of many tricks to escape the clutches of the fox. He tells Brer fox not to throw him into the briar patch. Using this reverse psychology, Brer Fox throws him into the Briar Patch which was Brer Rabbits home all along. This scene inspired the big drop on the ride 'Splash Mountain'.
Using intelligence to outwit and defeat your enemy. A good lesson for kids.
That is why the MAN is trying to kill this off
There is some splash mountain vibes
I love Uncle Remus. Cancel me for saying so, only DON'T throw me in a briar patch!
Um actually, I don't really think that is a... cancelable offence. At least in my humble school of thought!
This is an important piece of history. Disney needs to own it and distribute it. Next generation could learn something from this about our history.
I agree with that. I didn't know what this was about until my mom told me about it when I went to Disney World and rode a ride based on the "Song of the South" and enjoyed it very much! :)
I agree too bc Disney cannot run away from its past
Disney banned it 'cause they think it's racist.
The actors and sound characters were proud paid well and proud to make it
Exactly! Hiding it doesn't do anything good!
R.I.P. Splash Mountain 😢
🫂
It’s still alive at Tokyo Disney at least
"Now who's tellin' this here tale?"
"You are."
"Then you just sit and do the listenin'."
Now that's how you tell kids to pay attention.
I love how after all the threats they paid their respect to the “dead” 😂😂😂
God I love Brer Fox’s animation
Milt Kahl was the animator. One of the best animators from the Nine Old Men.
This movie should be released on Disney+ and home media.
It should!
When I went to Disney World and went to Splash Mountain I asked my mom what the ride was about. She told me that this ride was based on the story "Song Of The South" she had learned about as a kid. And after the ride was over I was amazed by this. This is truly a piece of storytelling history espeically in a difficult time in history. It's always important to tell kids about this- so we learn and continue to carry this story with us so future generations can enjoy this story, learn a thing or two about the past and even eventually become the next generation of storytellers. :)
Lesson here in this scene: Don’t ever pick a rabbit up by the ears in real life, it’ll hurt them really badly, causing permanent damage.
Yeah, but Brer Fox isn’t trying to be nice here. XD
This is a perfect example of reverse psychology.
I remember doing some research on this the first time I watched this movie
I remember going to the theater and watching this I was like 8 years old I am now 61 still love this show❤❤
I took my step daughter at age 6, her dad, who would be 62, had never seen it. As poor as my family was, we got to go to the drive in once in awhile after picking cotton and working in the garden.. I have a CD of this. My sons loved it as well.
Brer Fox: Ima skin yuh
Brer Bunny: Sure that’s fine- YOUR GUNNA WHA-
It's Br'er Rabbit and Br'er Fox not Brer Fox and Brer Bunny
When I was kid uncle Remus would put me to bed. Some really good wisdom in the stories, bare rabbit wants to run away from his problems but as Uncle Remus says theres not a place that far. There are people in this world that want to do you harm. You have to keep your wits when dealing with them. Don’t get needlessly offended, always works against you. Some problems get bigger the more you mess with them. I’m older now but grew up in the south. The ways these folks looked and talked was almost exactly as they are portrayed, it was a reality not a racist stereotype. It endeared me to them with deep respect due to the wisdom of Uncle Remus.
Just like in Splash Mountain
that's actually the whole backround of the big drop
that's because this is the movie based of the ride
@@realbrian639 I think you meant the other way around
@@ryandalton2834 no actually the movie is based off the ride
If I may clear up this confusion:
-Song of the South (1946)
-Splash Mountain (1992)
I love how Br’er Bear doesn’t get Br’er Fox’s sarcasm AT ALL. When the Fox is like “we wouldn’t do that would we,” the Bear just goes right back into “We just goonnna knooooock his heaaad cleeeaan offffff.” ROFL
"But you said..." Yeah, he's oblivious, and I appreciate it. Not everybody understands good sarcasm.
“I’m gonna knock his head clean off”
Ouch
“Not the mama!”
@@HimeRoseChibiChan lol 😂 I love Dinosaurs!
Disney needs to grow a pair and own this movie.
They couldn’t grow a pair to save their company
Unfortunately they did have a pair, but they TRANSitioned... tragic...
@@CarWashReviews-Ethan they’re stupid idiots!
@@CarWashReviews-Ethanlol, nice kne
It’s weird that this ride exists and is so iconic but most of the stuff about this movie has been purged from society
And its pretty much just because the live action portion is boring and regressive in a post civil rights society.
I feel like if you mentioned song of the south to anyone nowadays they only think of racism love you mention splash mountain people generally think of an actually good ride in Disney World/Disneyland
Bootleg DVDs are available online. I saw this as a child and have recently seen it again; Uncle Remus's plight is not disguised and the mother is clearly a racist. The opening of "darkies" singing as they return home from the fields may have contributed to the bad reputation. I always wanted my own Uncle Remus, and the film contributed to my appreciation of Black people while I was living in a racist state in the 50s.
The ride has been set for a redo. My seven year old has been crying for days since we just went on the ride the other day. His cousin told him that they are making it the frog prince ride in 2024. It only made him mader.
@@xavierdiazmcguire4667 Yes, the rides are going to be rethemed around Princess and the Frog. It is strange they originally made the ride(s) so late in the controversy, but the last reminders of the film are about to be purged this year.
Imagine how much better this would be if instead of being narrated by Uncle Remus, it was Uncle Ruckus.
I would absolutely love that.
I'm in the log flume ride, beginning to climb up the hill to the top. Seconds later, I reach the top and then, drop down the other side of the hill, then into the briar patch! (SPLASH!)
How did you text that😭😭😭😭😭😭
2:22 Br'er Rabbit I bet his heart is pounding
I know. Poor little fella was so scared.
Poor Wabbit ;3;
Well, I’ve read that a rabbits resting heart rate can beat 60-90 minutes per beat, and considering the dangerous situation he’s in, probably increased higher than that. Poor guy.
3:11 BRIAR PATCH!
Like a demon
Seriously, I love these shorts of the brer animals SO MUCH......I would trade the 'Road Runner and Wile Coyote' cartoons for more of these!
I know, different studios! Merely a figure of speech.
Only went digging for this movie after hearing Splash Mountain was shutting down. The live parts are boring except for Uncle Remus, the animated parts are wonderful. This is such a great scene and the Splash Mountain creators did such a great job building a ride off of it. I may never go back to Disney again, but I'm glad I can still see this part of our history.
This is a good movie.
My grandfather born in 1940 Lynn MA talks about this story often, he has this book among many children’s books. Even the term tar baby was misappropriated as a racist. The story is to show the lesson of the hare outsmarting the fox.
Honestly if the live action parts of this film were of equal quality to the animated bits, Disney might still sell this with only a disclaimer at the beginning like they do for their WWII propaganda stuff
The animation and voice acting 💯
This is actually one of my favorite scenes from "Song of the South"!
:)
I love the Song of the South and this was one of my favorite parts. So sorry they have made the foolish decision to try to take it away.
They did. It was banned worldwide in 2001 and it's not even on Disney Plus.
@@musiciangal02453 Huge mistake...it is a great show.
@@sharonhoyt2133 I know I have yet to see the whole movie and I won't be able to find it anywhere now. Soon it'll be completely forgotten 😞
@@musiciangal02453 I watched on TV in Canada as a kid. People still have the video cassettes. They should preserve it to show future generations what was acceptable TV in the 1980's in North America
@@RandoLePerson dude it used to be on TV in the 80's and I watched it in Canada as a kid. Just was saying that it was socially acceptable to show it on TV in the 80's. Kind of like Chief Wahoo wasn't even a thing in the 80's. Yet when you watch the Three Stooges it seems much more politically correct than a lot of newer stuff. No nudity and no racial undertones. Maybe a lot of objectifying women but they were always portrayed as being way smarter than the Stooges. Hope I remember it right. TV exposed kids to values back then and had a real influence. The Bugs Bunny but also He Man and Scooby Doo generation
this needs to be revamped i miss song of the south so muchh.
Master in animation and dialog
I remember when my pawpaw used to read me dis story from da golden book series edition
My pawpaw even used voices for da characters
I miss him so much

RIP to splash mountain😭
You know this breaks my heart, knowing how modern disney is now its very sad to say the least.
These characters were in a special place in Walt's heart. He even loved the 'Uncle Remus' stories and wanted to make this film especially to tell those stories and enjoy loveable characters. It's sad that disney took the ride down, because I've never rode the ride ever in my life, cus i was to little to ride it a long time ago, and didn't had another opportunity to go to Disney cus its to freaking expensive now. I even love Brer's personality so much and even love the art style within the film itself. I just hope one day maybe Disney will shine light and look back into this classic and hopefully bring it back that it deserves.

I've noticed that Brer Bear's line "Now look!" had been used multiple times throughout this.
1. At 3:48 they could have used the goofy yell sound effect for Brer Rabbit.
2. I notice even though Brer Fox hates him he still took off his hat in respect for his death and made Brer Bear do the same.
Pfft. B'rer Rabbit always knows how to talk his way out of a problem. X3
0:57-1:00, blimey Br'er Fox, got enough firewood there?
I love how Brer Fox discus throws Brer Rabbit into the briar patch
More of a "hammer throw", shore 'nuff!
I mostly and mainly payed attention to the animated sequences and the songs of the movie. I nevertheless watched the whole movie with parental supervision. However I was only allowed to watch the animated sequences alone and they’re were all I was ever interested in. The songs too as pre-mentioned.
Funfact: Br’er Rabbit actually represents the slaves who used their wits to escape their masters.
These stories are modified from various african folklore and religions. The stories were created before the african slave trade, and modified to resemble greek fables (using animals instead of gods and goddesses) to avoid persecution by christian slave owners.
OMG
Did not know that. Thanks for sharing.
Did not know that thanks for sharing.
@@Robb1977 some of the folklore was also native american which have many stories involving the bear, and if you listen to the voices, the cartoon characters had black voices.
Disney can feel however they want about this film, but would it kill them to at least give some acknowledgement to the talents of James Baskett, Nick Stewart, Johnny Lee, etc?
I like how Brer Rabbit stutters
Porky Pig: Am I a joke to you?
I love when the protagonist outsmart the antagonist kinda like Aladdin did with Jafar
"Song of The South" isn't racially insensitive. It takes place after the Civil War, so the African("black") people in it are not slaves, and the movie is about the friendship between a young "white" boy and an old "black" man. It's a positive movie with positive messages. The only reasons that anybody thinks that this movie is racially insensitive are that they haven't done their research and assume that the film takes place before or during the Civil War, and the fact that Disney, thanks to Michael Eisner and Bob Iger, has not given the movie any kind of official release since 1986(other than some VHS and Laserdisc releases in certain countries), which only helps to perpetuate the notion that the movie is racially insensitive. If Disney had released the movie on VHS, DVD, and Blu-ray worldwide, there would be very few, if any, people who think that "Song of The South" is racially insensitive. Is it a great movie? No, but it is a good movie with a positive message of friendship, and it deserves to be defended, and I will continue to do so. Disney needs to release the film on Blu-ray and make it available on Disney Plus, with bonus features included, including a feature-length documentary on the film's creation, release, and legacy. Also, Walt Disney wasn't racist. The "black" actors who were in the film were not allowed to attend the film's world premiere at the Fox Theater in Atlanta,GA, but that wasn't Walt's fault. It was 1946 and segregation in the American South was a thing by that point. Walt hated the fact that the "black" actors weren't allowed to attend the premiere, but, obviously, there was nothing that he could do about it. Walt made it possible for James Baskett(the actor who played Uncle Remus and Brer Fox) to get an Oscar for his portrayal of Uncle Remus. #ReleaseSongofTheSouth and #DonotchangeSplashMountain.
I agree 100%
@@mrsr4640 There's nothing racist about the word 'uncle' and everybody calls Remus 'Uncle Remus'. Not just Johnny.
The issue is attempting to rewrite history by showing that black and white people got along “great” during the reconstruction era and Jim Crow laws. That and showing that recently freed slaves went back to working on plantations because they loved it and that they got paid well when you know damm well it wasn’t that way. This movie isn’t outright racist or atleast not intentionally, but it has several negative stereotypes and leaves a sour message over a poor time in history by making it look “bright and pretty”
Why would I show my black kids this stupid movie lol hell no.
@@Taylorlove17 You know nothing about it. If you actually read my comment, you would understand.
Milt Kahl emphasised the action of Fox while saying "I'm going to skin yah!" The delivery was perfected by the head/body not the mouth since it barely moved.

It is honestly boring. Not offensive just boring.
You can find it online. The animated parts are fun, the live parts aren't that great. Catchy songs though. It's mostly worth watching because of the controversy.
@@windogendoors7566 Well for someone over 9 yrs old maybe. But the voices were funny.
It's as awesome now as it was when I saw it as a kid!
All of the comments about "promoting slavery, etc" are obviously from people who haven't seen or enjoyed the movie. Uncle Remus and the other Black people are hired help or sharecroppers. Movie was set in Reconstruction era otherwise Uncle Remus wouldn't have been able to leave and go to Atlanta. This a heartwarming story of an elderly man who shows love to three children with different backgrounds who all become fast friends with his wise help.
The skinning part is a bit much for kids… but I still like this animation and Brer Rabbit is pretty funny!
It’s a old fable. Why is it too much for kids now but not way back when?? Hmmmm guess kids were better raised and smarter than todays Smdh

A black man tells a story...
Somehow in America, that's racism...
It's far from being just "A black man tells a story..." and you know it.
Intellectual dishonesty is very unbecoming.
The microcosm that "Song of the South" portrays is at best inaccurate, and at worst, historical revisionism. It is rightly out of print and is subject to the same sort of criticism that any fictional work portraying false Reconstruction Era attitudes should be.

Beautiful movie! One of the sweetest memories of my youth. I think it shows racial love and acceptance. Why can't we learn from this today? There is no inferiority and superiority in God's sight.
Agreed. It's a film about white children being exposed to the culture of another race and coming away with it as a positive experience. BUT OH NO, IT IS SET AT THE WRONG PERIOD OF TIME! OH THE HORROR!

While I do like the sentiment behind your statement in racial acceptance, the film itself still treats black people as an inferior group of people and perpetuates a ton of racial stereotypes of the day. It isn't directly racist like Birth of a Nation, it's more unwittingly racist. And one of the biggest pieces that was not just in the movie but in the production itself that perpetuated this unwittingness was when the actor who played Uncle Remus, arguably the lead of the film since he headlined the posters, was not allowed to attend the premiere because it was a white's only theater.
1:33 Bear Want to Knock Rabbit Out

First Splash Mountain because of parts of the movies that aren't in the ride. Next next It's a small world because of the way someone's dressed, then Walt's Tiki Room because of Jose's accent. #savesplashmountain
Woah i almost forgot about this
Honestly, if the Disney company really wanted to keep this film relevant or in the public conscious, they would've just made an edited version minus the Uncle Remus bits.
Maybe even produce two versions so the people could choose.
