    the floating market got eliminated when bridges got built to connect the cities together and removed the needs for taking ferries or shipping goods grown/made in the mekong delta to the cities. in fact, the Cai Rang market is a lot smaller than it's used to be a few years ago.

    Seemingly, our need for ‘better’ or ‘improved’ takes precedence. We discover simpler ways of life we might have kept. Not sure what this worldwide precedence to remove or tear down the treasures, rather than incorporate and keep the best features! Alas, progress lol. About 90% of Vietnamese is non-religious but that 90% also goes to pagodas and prays to the Buddha. Even though they don't consider themselves Buddhist, you can pretty much say that Buddhism still has much power in Vietnam more than any religion.
    (And Catholism is still under 'special observation')

      You are right, I wonder if that guide is anti-Buddhism for giving such a figure. As for Christianity, they should observe them after those lessons with France and US caused by Emperor Bao Dai and Prime Minister Ngo Dinh Diem who are both Catholics and betrayed their country.

    Another great video,
    Vietnam is a country with a diverse religious landscape. While Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism have been practiced in Vietnam for centuries, other religions such as Christianity, Islam, and Hinduism have also made inroads in recent times. However, it is true that a significant portion of the Vietnamese population is not religious.
    There are several reasons for this. Firstly, Vietnam has a long history of atheism, which can be traced back to the communist revolution of the 1940s. The Communist Party of Vietnam, which took power in 1975, officially recognized freedom of religion but also promoted atheism as the ideology of the state. This led to a decline in religious practice among the population.
    Secondly, Vietnam is a predominantly rural country where traditional beliefs and practices are still prevalent. Many people in rural areas follow animist beliefs that involve worshipping ancestors and spirits, rather than organized religions. These beliefs are deeply ingrained in the culture and have persisted despite the spread of other religions.
    Thirdly, Vietnam has a strong tradition of Confucianism, which emphasizes ethical behavior and social harmony rather than religious devotion. Confucianism has had a significant influence on Vietnamese culture and society, and many people who identify as non-religious still follow Confucian principles.
    Lastly, Vietnam has experienced rapid economic and social changes in recent decades, which have led to a decline in traditional values and an increase in secularism. As people become more urbanized and educated, they are less likely to adhere to religious beliefs and practices.
    Overall, the lack of religious adherence in Vietnam is due to a complex interplay of historical, cultural, and social factors.

    • @zhihui8885
      @zhihui8885 Рік тому

      Vietnam learned a bad lesson from religion. If their last emperor wasn't a Catholic, he would not have worked for the French and later appointed a Catholic PM who persecuted Buddhists and sold himself to US and caused the Vietnam war.

      As with many things in life, it depends on the metric used. There are official census numbers, estimates, metropolitan areas, urban areas, and city jurisdictional areas, all of which are slightly different and yield different results.
      Looking at how Vietnam officially calculates population, (based not on the number of people living there but on how many people call it their hometown), Hai Phong is 3rd, Can Tho is 4th, and Da Nang is 5th. If you count immigrant workers, it's harder to get an accurate count, (possibly one reason why Vietnam doesn't use this method), the ranking changes. Even among local Vietnamese residents there is no clear agreement on the largest cities.

    Loving your VN series. However, just a friendly suggestion - do your own research and take what the tour guides tell you with a grain of salt. They are likely restricted on what they can tell tourists. There is a lot of government restriction on organized religion - it's a communist country. Just saying. We'll be there next year hopefully and hitting a lot of these locations! Thanks for travel tips!

    Not only foreigners but Vietnamese often made mistakes with the different city sizes. Saigon was the biggest city up until 15yrs ago when Hanoi decided to make the greatest expansions, so Hanoi actually is the biggest city in size, but Saigon is bigger in population ....Third is Hai Phong city, Fourth is Da Nang and fifth is Can Tho .
    Hai Phong is a port city near Hanoi, it's less developed however they still have a great collection of French colonial architectures, you can say Hai Phong is what Ha Noi should look like in the 1990s

    • @zhihui8885

      Usually size of a city refers to population and not the area.

    • @caovan4912
      @caovan4912 Рік тому

      @@zhihui8885 Hi friend, it's both in area and population. HoChiminh city - more than 10 mil., Hanoi city - around 10 mil, HaiPhong city - around 5 mil., DaNang city - around 1.5 mil, CanTho city - ~1.2 mil. Each of them also plays the role of the regional capital city (DaNang - central coastal region, CanTho - Southwest/Mekong delta region, HCM city - Southeast region), except HaiPhong, because in the Northern plain region, people know Hanoi the most. Like, it means HaiPhong city is under the bigger shadow of Hanoi city, then people usually forget its big role.

    Should have insurance that covers you in Vietnam and pays the hospital IMMEDIATELY!! No insurance or cash to pay for operation-no treatment. Most people travelling to here never think about this, but if you get dengue, typhoid, or in an accident (some of the most dangerous roads in the world here) the hospitals will do no more than receive you until a down-payment/payment has been made. They just push your bed into the hall and wait for money or.....Also, you must have a Vietnamese driver license and motorbike insurance if you want to drive a motorbike. Have a motobike accident and injure a Vietnamese with no Vietnamese license and no moto insurance- ever watch 'Locked-up-Abroad'? Chain your money to yourself, trust no one, carry a small bottle of alcohol for bites, beware of people wanting to help you. Be ready to be scammed, lied to, extorted, and robbed at any time. Do not be naive reading about Vietnam being heaven-on-Earth! Dirty, dusty, trashy, noisy and still 3rd world. Living here 22 years now. FYI.
