  • To combat morning grumpiness, we made an artificial sunrise lamp to slowly prepare my body for waking up. We salvaged an old LCD screen from the garbage bin, and repurposed the backlighting elements to form a large distributed surface that can spread light evenly across my entire bedroom.

The concept of repurposing LCD backlighting sections for light diffusion has been done by DIY Perks in several of his videos, check them out if you're curious:

We wanted to experiment a bit with our style for this video. Feel free to let us know what works (and what doesn't 🥶). Hope you enjoy the video and the project!

I just use Phillips Hue smart bulbs to help me wake up. Works well enough. Cool project though!

Lmao I love the name of this channel, and I loved the video, I've been thinking about doing this myself. But I always thought "who wants to watch anyone doing repetitive tasks for hours on hours? You nailed it!

Love the idea/design - I want to build something similar. This design suffers from what every alarm manufacturer since the dawn of time has assumed: that people with difficulty waking up use a 7 day calendar. I work shift work, so currently I work 2 day shift, 2 nights shift, then 4 days off. No traditional clock can handle this kind of schedule gracefully. My plan is to use an esp that can pull from a google calendar, bluetooth, or other json file format, to either have a list of alarm days, or the ability to procedurally code the schedule. (in my case it's day day night night, each instance repeats every 8 days). Many other shift workers/emergency services have similar insane timings that everyone making smart alarms ignores. (lookin at you philips ambilight).

That’s a very good point. I did not really write this firmware to be very user friendly for anyone but myself, but I totally get your frustration. On a somewhat related note, I’ve always wanted to be able to pause an alarm for x days (e.g. until the end of my vacation) so I don’t have to turn it off entirely and risk forgetting to turn it back on.

Is there any app that allows gradual dimming of the ikea bulbs? or any other bulbs. Just a system I can buy and use?

Nice project ! But couldn't a home automation software do the same thing with some wireless bulbs ? in addition we can create lots of different schedules, or even something more automated with more sensors

You are probably right, but I have a dumb-home™ and I wanted to build it from an old LCD screen :)
