  • The 1964 Tony Bettenhausen Memorial at the Illinois State Fairgrounds was the 7th race of the 1964 USAC Champ Car Series season which took place on August 22, 1964!

    Men lived with courage unparalleled compared to racing today. Bill Horstmeyer died in that nasty wreck. The drivers were well aware of what happened...but with respect to the whole event the race went on to be completed. One must remember these were men who were not far removed from WW2... Jud Larson served in the Marines and Roger Ward was a P-38 Lightning fighter pilot in World War II....as well as a B-17 pilot (I saw his last win at Trenton in 1966) . I'm so glad I lived to see this era. No death is trite...but the men who raced back then accepted it and were expected to continue the "show". Thanks for the post of this incredible win by Foyt in the midst of a driver's death.
