Tik Taco yeah that part was pretty twisted! The fact that she was cutting her head off even faster and faster each time the music got louder and louder was pretty disturbing
EternalCreator nor is a general lack of intelligence coupled with the inability to be humble enough to say “I don’t get it. Can you explain this to me?” Haha.
I thought of it as a soft manifestation of the inherited schizophrenia. A genetically inherited connection (propensity for schizo) to this treacherous quadrant of the spirit world, expressing itself through a woman's desire to build voodoo-doll-like objects.
Well I agree with the Opinion in the Video, I think it was good but it didn't nearly impress like evwryone is saying here. And 66% on Rotten Tomatoes reflects that, too. I don't even know why people are so mad 7/10 is still a very good score. It just means thwy could have done some stuff a little bit different. I personally liked Midsommar more because it was so good and so different from what I've seen in horror before
You all are so funny. 7 isn't low at all. If 5 is average then 7 is way above that and just shows that it is a good film. Everybody acting ao butthurt just because they don't hype it that much. I agree with them, I would have done some parts differently. And I watched a lot of movies especially horror.
The movie isn't supposed to constantly "scare" you. The drama within the family and general plot creates a very uneasy feeling that the ending feeds off of.
Connor Luedtke exactly, the film had a distrubing reality to it. The family conflict is real and that's what drives the film. The horror was implemented well but at its core it was a family drama, a really good one at that.
Oh so you're one of those who left after the first half and didn't notice the retarded "let's turn this psychological movie into yet another ghost-possession movie" second half? Good to know.
Metal Videos You’re fucking stupid, this movie was excellent. Only idiots with low attention spans would find it to be boring or dog shit. This is the problem with audiences today, they just want their scares given to them with poor timing and no subtlety. People like you are the reason why we get so many shitty, juvenile, and emotionally soulless movies that appeal to the lowest common denominator. Go watch a Michael Bay movie.
instead of jump scares they introduce shock and dread build up moments like Charlie’s head in the road the desk scene the dad burning scene the mom sawing her head off scene the naked people hiding in the woods scene
@@maximeroux-lacroix7219 uhh...congrats? Dunno what you expect us to say. Charlie's death scene was disturbing and scary. The mom's floating body was both as well. If you thought it was funny then imo you werent watching the way it was intended.
How do the dollhouses not play in. It was one of the key features of the movie to the point where they made their sets to mirror a doll house. It was to give the impression that the house was always being watched and controlled by someone or something outside the home (naked xD)
To me i take it as paimon is controlling them like they have no control over thier lives or as a director insert saying this is my story im gonna tell it to you
I know this is late but 100% agree with u! It almost makes me wonder if anything in the movie really happened or it was just that the mother was insane and was just building these doll houses to idk how to say it but like live her life through the miniatures? It was also stated that the grandmother suffered from phycosis which could be hereditary
Frak 8117 Joe hits the mark on movie reviews about 40% of the time in my opinion. He was absolutely wrong about Arrival that’s for sure. But I love the content nonetheless
Its a subjective thing man. I don't get how people don't see that. Joe reviewed Detroit become human and wasn't exactly pleased with it being more like an interactive movie. But *I* loved the game heavy rain which was pretty much what I think Detroit become human is and it being written like that was fine for me. I get that it is a more linear game, so I'm not looking for a huge sandbox game; but joe mentioning the limited gameplay isnt to be ignored. I can't remember if it was Nostalgia critic but I think he made a video about the objective and subjective nature of reviews and critics. Why the average audience might hate something but the critics like it and vice versa. I think you should go watch it if I'm correct that he made it. I think a good example on a critic writing about something would be zero punctuation because he doesn't put a number rating on something that isn't exactly the kind of thing you put a number on like a game or movie. Hell I think joe himself even harped on IGN for giving a game rating a decimal number. (Titanfall I think it was, and followed by the twitter crap.) But at the same time Yahtzee can be kind of harsh on games I've liked. Never take a reviewers critique of something to heart simply because they said #/10; you have to listen to what joe says that is good in the movie prior to the rating. Atmosphere and tension, no cheap jumpscares, but a long long wait for character building before anything really interesting happens. And you know what...some movies don't click with people regardless of the majority opinion. Its something you'll have to live with like a friend not liking chocolate or something. His word isn't god but more of a guide or suggestion.
U guys missed the point of the little rooms, every room was played out from her life and wierd shots were done where u didn't know if u were looking in really close at the space/object or if it was really part of the real house -Losing her grip on reality
Really? But how did "losing her grip on reality" play any part of the story. She never actually lost her grip on reality because what she was seeing was real. And, she only doubted herself in the beginning of when she was seeing apparitions... which didn't last long.
David Alonso They really do. That’s the case for almost every movie review I watch from Joe and his pals. I will say, my ONLY gripe with the movie was the that the ending was rushed.
I agree, I was super invested and interested. I went in ready to appreciate everything and I was happy seeing the characters go about stuff. I really liked it
you cant? man i fel a sleep half way through because i was bored out of my mind. i had to force my self through it. glad i didnt pay money for it. thank god for torrents. horror movies based on satanic stuff is NOT scary. its literally the opposite of scary. cant believe people liked this movie or thought it was scary. because it was literally dog shit
@@metalvideos1961 The point of this movie wasn't the satanic stuff. You really missed the mark on that one. Infact. King Paimon didn't even become relevant to the story until pretty much the very end. With the cult surrounding Peter. Also... i don't know what that says about you as a person to fall asleep to movie like that. Either you're seriously in control in tense situations or just very cold in general. Meaning horror movies are probably not for you in the first place. And the criticism should be taken with a grain of salt.
@@mahchestro9144 horror movies are not for me? lol. i am a horror movie fanatic. i like good horrors. horrors with a good story or at least something that scares me. or shock me. like snuff and torture horrors. non of the horrors america have made as of lately interest me anymore. the last decade they only have made boring horror movies with the same concept over and over and over again. its always about satanic stuff like demons or haunting people or things like that. stuff that isnt scary and never was. same as this movie you said its not about the satanic stuff. then why the fuck do they make a movie with a haunting house/possessed person and stuff like that. thats pretty satanic if you ask me. no i like good horrors hence the reason why i am a huge asian horror fan. at least they still make good horror movies. especially japan. japan is the king of shock/torture/snuff horrors. they have amazing normal horrors as well with a good story and great atmosphere. movies that actually make you anxious by watching it. south korean and thailand are amazing as well. the reason why i fell a sleep with this movie is because it was boring as fuck. nothing interesting nothing special. nothing i havnt seen before. it was the same crap like i have seen for the past 10 years. american wise that is. so dont say to me that this is not my genre. america should just stop making horrors and leave it to the people that can make horrors. like south korea japan and thailand. at least they still know what they are doing. and if you are interested in some asian horrors i can give you shit tons of horror that are actually good. not this bullshit that isnt scary nor interesting. its either satanic bullshit that hollywood comes up with. or they remake another asian movie and totally fuck it up. like they did with the ring (although the first ring remake was a good movie not going to lie), the grudge, dark water, The Eye and more.
I know it's a bit late, but being slow @ the start it's actually what makes this film stronger. Like reading a book almost, the emotion is so shocking & real. I feel the dreadfulness of the characters as if it imprinted on the back of my head as I walk out of the movie theater.
I don’t understand why people can’t get the slow burn. Everything doesn’t have to be shaky cam and jump scares to be good. 2001 is brilliantly boring. This movie wasn’t boring because it was meant to be felt. Family. Character driven. The horror element is secondary until the end.
Mark Smith Great comment. If you can't empathize with the characters and feel what they're going through because you're looking for quick, cheap scares and horror tropes, you end up viewing the film's pacing negatively. Everything rides on character development and feeling what the family is feeling. That specifically is what makes the film so horrifying, as opposed to being jarred by a loud sound.
Agreed, not really a fan of jump scares. There was maybe one or two in this film I prefer the “what the fuck is this shit” kinda scary that makes you think, like the ending.
The problem is in the advertising. Did they advertise it as a scary, horror movie with intense scenes "this generations Exorcist". Yes.. yes they did. So, when it's not... that's problem. It's a family psychological thriller. Same thing happened with The Witch and It Comes at Night. Do you know how long I waited for "It" to come. Hahaha
See, I agree with you. I appreciate the slow burn as much as anyone who takes film and storytelling seriously. I do enjoy cheap jump scares, they're fun sometimes, but I went into this expecting to see a legitimately scary film. The way I've described this film is that from a technical standpoint, it's absolutely stunning. The acting, the cinematography, the direction in particular, all downright fantastic. BUT. There is so much buildup to the final act, but it just ends up being a generic, cliche ending. I know that my explanation for this is going to be bad, but I sincerely cannot think of how to properly word what I mean. I was expecting the film to have an important meaning at the end. Like they were building to something meaningful, something mind-blowing. I expected all that time spent traveling uphill, that reaching the top of the mountain was going to be something so totally drastic. I can't really say exactly what I was expecting, as I'm not the writer of this film. I do write horror for a living, but obviously if I were going to speak on what I'd do differently with the ending I would need to change things in the first and second acts, but that's neither here nor there. SPOILERSSPOILERSSPOILERSSPOILERSSPOILERSSPOILERS Rather, all that buildup, all that emotional manipulation, all that suspense, and the ending was......."we're bringing a demon into the world." That just seemed like a copout to me. Until we learn that that's what the goal is, I felt as if the ending was going to be something unique. Instead, it was simply...."we're bringing a demon into the world." When we learn that that's the payoff, the slow burn seems not worth waiting through. This is, of course, just my opinion! I'm glad you liked the film, and I'm very glad it was as successful as it was. I've said it before and I'll say it again, this was as solid a debut film as I've ever seen, and I am absolutely going to check out whatever Ari Aster puts out in the future. This one, unfortunately, just didn't do it for me. I'm very glad I saw it, I'm glad I contributed to its box office success, but the storytelling was just a huge letdown for me. Have a good day!
I get slow burn, I just perfer something from M. Night Shyamalan like Unbreakable, Split, or Sixth Sense. I saw it as Film that just layered it like adding layers to a cake, it's good at first then you get bored with it. If the supernatural part was cut out of the Film it would be okay or good as a drama.
I can't even comprehend being bored by this film unless you just have an extremely short attention span paired with a complete lack of appreciation for filmmaking craft, mood, character development/emotion/performances, etc. It was easily one of the fastest two hours I can recall having in the theater because I was gripped, transfixed to the screen by that sheer craft in just about every scene for one reason or another and what'll easily be regarded as one of the best performances of 2018 in Toni Collette. It was a deeply unsettling experience that aimed to shake the human heart, violently, and took its time in building tension that had me deeply uncomfortable. Not by this apparent need for assaulting the senses with loud noises and easy scares, assaulting your psychology and emotions. Nothing happened in the first hour? Are we for real with this? Jesus. This is why we don't get this kind of effort every year and why most studios are quick to fuck up a vision a filmmaker may have for "Make more things "HAPPEN" here/more SCARES and action! Jingle the keys HARDER--the audience are just idiots!"
you cant? i fell a sleep half way through. i had to force my self through it. horror movies based on satanic stuff is NOT scary. it never was and never will be. time for hollywood to get it through their thick skull. just because 75% of the americans are religious. doesnt mean that satanic horror movies are scary. because they are not. i can give you tons of better horror movies that makes this movie even look more shit then it already is. if you cant believe that people get bored by this then it tells me that you havnt seen any real and good horror movies.
@@metalvideos1961 you are missing the point entierly... The demonic isn't the most unsettling part. It's the mental and psychological aspects of the movie that are unsettling. The acting in this was top notch. The death of the daughter is the hook that gets you to feel for the family and mother. This movie was suspenseful, wondering if and how this family will cope. I loved it, ending could have been better though.
people should honestly be praising this for no jump scares. I for one am sick and tired of my senses being attacked and them having the nerve to call it horror. I actually want a film to do all the work in just making you feel uneasy in the atmosphere and tone of the film rather than a ghost jumping out here or plates shattering there. Those horror tropes have been done to death. This is perhaps why they liken it to the exorcist, not per say claiming it as scary as the film but that it like the exorcist is a film all about the atmosphere of uneasiness. If I recall there was never if maybe just a couple jumpscares the rest of the film was entirely just in your face creepiness.
Yeah this movie had one very well done jumpscare and one thing that made it so good was that it didn't have the fucking obnoxiously loud sound effect that every horror movie has
Remember: these are the guys that said suicide squad is a good movie. Don't expect them to do any remotely competent film criticism. These people are like children. Everything needs to be fast, flashy and loud to keep their attention span. Because of people like them movies and film makers with artistic intentions and uniqueness are suffering in order to feed mainstream cg borefests
You hit the nail right on the head. I think that people who found this movie "boring" or "funny" should honestly stick to mindless, superficial action films like Transformers
i thought Suicide Squad was FUN. But Hereditary is MEMORABLE (for better or worse). Hereditary is a legendary horror movie, something different and not recycled.
Thank you. I'm so glad this platform has YMS for real movie critique in valuing the art of film. They like movies that require the brain to be turned off. Angry Joe picks up on some of it, but there is SO much that went RIGHT over there heads in the film. Like their statements about it being boring.. If you really keep your mind active there are so many nuances and subtle story telling elements that I still find new pieces in the background each watch. Plus, that statement about the toy houses not coming into play is just flat out wrong. Completely wrong. There are so many nuances and beautiful story telling elements in those scenes.
Olivia Butler It's a flat out fact that this review is not good or comprehensive in terms of film critique. I'm sure that there are people (like you,) who find his movie reviews good. Which is fine, but there is objective fact to the quality of a film, and AJ(and his crew) do not understand what those facts are and thus cannot provide genuine analysis and critique. Movies are a form of art, same as painting, same as literature. The same process applies exactly to painting. Sure, most people would look at a piece of a good painting and say "wow, that's pretty good, they're talented." But, to offer a real critique requires well versed knowledge of the artform itself (color composition, symmetries of the background to the foreground, etc.) You may just shrug it off as we 're "boring," but this video is nowhere near being sufficient or capable of genuinely reviewing this film for what it actually is.
Exactly, people want horror spoon fed to them and then criticize it for doing just that. I like this film because it makes you think. I appreciate the mystery of it all.
Can't blame them. Everything is expected to happen fast now days. Technlogoy is much at fault. That is why this movie is sooooo good. Most horror movies have cheap jump scares and terrible acting! This movie will shit on all other "horror" movies for years to come.
my parents fell asleep so i was alone in the dark room with a projector screen watching it and i loved it but regreted watching it because i was just so. damn. creeped. out. SPOILER: that fucking scene with the mom on the corner of the ceiling holy SHIT. I don't understand why they think the movie is slow.. it builds up so you have to pay attention to whats happening!
I wasn't bored at all. The movie kept my interest the whole way through. I think you guys just aren't into slow burner stories. I'm kind of used to it, so I don't mind. I actually prefer slow burner stories because you grow a stronger connection to the characters. I would've loved to see this film's extra hour that was apparently cut. That's just me though. Outstanding film. 90% of horror films are trash anyways. This is one of the few good ones.
"90% of horror movies are trash anyways" EXACTLY. And this movie sets an exactly for the kind of screenplay and pace a horror movie SHOULD HAVE for it to be a good MOVIE
The scariest scene to me: when the son with the broken nose wakes up, and you can barely see the mother floating on the corner of the wall. Man, for some reason, that was insanely scary.
Really? I was laughing at that part. The mother in the corner was stressful, then she started swimming mid air and I bursted out laughing. It just looked goofy to me.
MrDoug41 SPOILER ALERT FOR ANYONE WHO HASNT SEEN THE FILM when the naked people at the end first showed up. I literally yelled cuz I was not expecting that 😂
That’s the point of a good horror film. It’s about the build up and the final payoff. It’s not about payoff, payoff, payoff. This isn’t an action movie. It’s a slow burn, visual horror film. It’s not about jump scares. The movie was amazing. I feel bad for those that didn’t grasp it.
I must have missed the point too... to me this movie was trash ... and I'm well acquainted with the occult and the demonic kings.... can you explain to me how this movie was good or scary? Cuz the dialogue was terrible, the fake crying completely broke immersion and you could almost legit see the strings on the body in the end that was getting hauled up into the tree house.
Pretty funny they criticize slow burn when films like exorcist amd rosemarys baby are very much like that. Which are films they praise. So sad our culture is about someone dying or whatever in very first mins.
zombric one I guess it depends if the movie does it well. Problem might not be the slow burn but the delivery. There are movies that don't feel long even when they are because the atmosphere and direction is very good. If you have a slow burn that doesn't have anything interesting happening then some people aren't going to enjoy it.
zombric one I agree, I watched the exorcist in my mid teen years and found it extremely tedious to watch due to its boring side dialogues and disorienting past vs present clips. The ending was also extremely underwhelming and wasn’t scared at all
I think the opening shot of the dollhouse showing the dad walking into his son's room was to hint that the cult were always watching and preparing to manipulate the family members like effigies. So the inclusion of the dollhouse was therefore very important. Paimon was also said to have extensive knowledge of the arts and sciences, so it makes sense that the mother and her daughter also practised making works of art, a skill probably passed down by the grandmother (the queen) to her lineage.
Yup the dollhouse was symbolic to the family being puppets...and puppets that couldn't see the strings, let alone know that they were puppets to begin with! Everything was preordained, and they had absolutely no control over anything in their lives.
His channel subs has gone down ever since he started doing these reviews and the board game reviews. I think he should have made a second channel for all of his non-gaming videos.
Lmao no he doesn't. He gets over a million views for his game reviews and these, depending on if it's an anticipated movie or not, range from 90,000 to a few hundred thousand.
I actually loved the slow burn of the majority of the film leading up to the end. I love not knowing what the hell’s going to happen. The whole dysfunctional, crumbling family dynamic was way creepier in my opinion than the entirety of the last 20 minutes. The whole *SPOILERS* Cult premise in my opinion was just okay compared to the psychological breakdown of the entire family.
A horror movie in 2018 without jump scares. Saw it last night and really enjoyed it, would love to see it again actually. For now I would give it a B+. Very Rosemary's Baby. Looking forward to the directors next movie for sure.
yep it was like The Witch meets Rosemary's Baby, I loved it.. The Guy in this review insists that Annie (the mother) doesn't get possessed but she totally does, when she is levitating and hacking her head off she is possessed/controlled by Paimon, when she dies and the son jumps out of the window, the demon enters her sons body, I don't know how this guy does not realise this.
Keep in mind, Joe's perspective is purely from a casual point of view. If you really love cinema and study the film, you really see the genius behind the whole thing. I think the director is a master of his craft and it really shines throughout this movie. They might think the first hour was "boring" but I saw it as building the audience up slowly but surely with agony and tension. This movie does a fantastic job of building up tension and then keeping you there without letting you go. This can be done through more then just scares. This is one of the most masterful horror movies I have seen in a long time and this is coming from a current film student's perspective.
im nowhere near a critic but I did enjoy this movie all the way through. It seemed intelligent and had a depth to it, and I don't see how watching a family go through that kind of loss can be described as boring. favorite horror movie to date.
Helaric because someone has a different opinion they’re a pseudo-intellectual? I don’t think I’m the sharpest tool in the shed but you may be the dullest.
NJF Productions dunno, I'm as casual as it gets and I really enjoyed it. Mainly because I heard about it being good and just went and saw it, I was soul wrenched by the middle of the movie because all the family drama, the second half I was wondering if the mom was mentally ill and the ending felt like an unexpected twist so so was hooked, uncomfortable, creeped out and entertained all the way through. 9/10 because I'm gonna have nightmares for a month.
honestly its a 9.5 - 10. Even backtracking the movie now and seeing subtle things like the Paimon engraved on the pole as they are driving TO the party. FUCK this movie was so good.
This is a one of a kind movie and in my opinion the best horror movie I've ever seen due to the masterful acting, atmosphere and direction, and I've seen most of them. This the type of movie that is packed with subtle details that can easily be missed if you take your eyes away from the screen. You do have to play very close attention to every small detail to get the full story. You guys did miss some very subtle yet important details, hence your confusion about the possession of the mother. For maximum effect, I recommend watching it again alone in one sitting with zero distractions in the dark with surround sound or headset on large screen. Remember to play very close attention to every detail (both foreground and background effects). If you are a horror movie fan, the slow burn is worth the wait.
I'm glad you guys liked it for the most part. IMHO it was a lot better than you give it credit for. The parts you thought were boring didn't end up making me check my watch, i was pretty engrossed the whole time. I think because the shock at the beginning of the film caught me off guard because I didn't expect anything like that to happen so early, and during the middle part that dragged on a little, I was still engaged because it was coming from a high point, winding down, and then started ramping up again at the end. It was great overall solid 8/10
ImpalerGaming I'm defending the movie numbnut. The other Joe was complaining about the how the movie sucked because it took to long to get to the scares because it had great character development. He was expecting Annabelle.. Lol
Ye this makes sense, the 2 Joe's only seem to give good scores for simple films / blockbusters (most of the time anyway). Guy on left just hates everything and is to be ignored in EVERY movie review.
What I take from the couple of reviews I've heard of this film, is that nobody actually wants a horror film. They want a psychological thriller about a family that's breaking apart, not a horror movie.
Seosamh Wray it's not just psychological, but an occult/paranormal movie meets family drama, with a handful of scenes that would qualify as horror. I saw it last night.
I guess you guys have never seen Rosemary’s Baby The Shining The Witch The Haunting And any horror that’s not a jumpscare piece of shit. I understand opinions but you guys are so impatient.
Yeah this POS did not have jump scares. It had no scares or even tension building up. Just like that turd "The Witch" without any pay off. Just watch porn instead wasting your life on this.
Rosemary's Baby wasn't really that slow tbh. Neither was the Shining for that matter. In either case, the payoff and stories worked a hell of a lot better than Hereditary.
SPOILERS****** When Annie is going through her mother's things in the attic around the start of act 3, she finds an embroidered mat her grandma is known to make with the name "charles" on it. I believe the grandma cursed charlie in the womb with the spirit of Paimon because she was originally supposed to be born male, hence the mat with the name "charles". Thus causeing the grandma to put a plan into action with her coven to try and transfer that evil spirit from charlie to peter
Yep. At the beginning off the movie, Charlie says “She wanted me to be a boy.” The grandmother pressured her daughter into having a child so she could use it as a host.
For me, creepy movies are vastly more effective than "Scary" movies because after a certain age, nothing scares you anymore (besides a potential army siren or demolition siren that makes you think the country is being invaded by goodness knows what). Psychological thrillers/horrors all the way. No matter the grind, I can stick it. This film reminds me highly of Mama which was an absolutely outstanding horror film. Especially in its third and final act.
Joooooooooe... How was she not possessed when she's sticking to walls, crawling through the air, DECAPITATING HERSELF, and floating headless into a treehouse... If she wasn't possessed, I don't know what TF else was going on.
Horror is in a shitty place right now because people don't know what they want from it. People who claim they just "Want great horror films" don't actually care about a strong story and strong directing being shown to them..... They just want quick scares and thrills which is what got us to the point where 90% of horror films suck. Horror used to be seen as an art form with movies like Psycho and Exorcist, a means of story telling that has a lasting impact on the watcher..... Now we've forgot about that and just watch a scary face jumping into our faces then complain when it happens too much or too little. Every classic horror film has a very slow first 3/4 Halloween, Psycho and exorcist to name a few but these days people just want quick thrills
Good points but I feel like the 2 conjuring films and to a lesser extent annabelle creation strike a good balance between both. They are solid horror films no matter what era, however i agree when you say all people want are scary faces leads to shitty movies and then complaints from fans.
Exactly, something was always fucking happening (even when we think it wasn't). The amount of easter eggs in this film associated w/ pagan rituals are amazing. The words, symbolism, and even the ending music is associated w/ the demon "Paimon" who is said to love that similar bell sound. Here's some info from a article I found: "Paimon: Is also frequently written "Paymon', and sometimes "Paimonia'. Probably from Hebrew, POMN, = a tinkling sound or small bell. This is again derived from the Hebrew root POM, = to agitate, impel, or strike forward" The attention to detail is under appreciated. I swear these guys have no skill at reading between the lines, or appreciating build up.
justin you're everywhere. i seriously want a button so that you don't even see some youtubers comments at this point... also i think you're liking your own comments.
personally i think this is one of the greatest horror movies i have ever seen; alex says there was no payoff for some things, which is awesome ! imagine a movie making you ask questions these days, everything major is answered as long as you pay enough attention and aren’t checking your watch....
one of the greatest? that means you have literally never seen good horror movies then? never watched asian horrors have you. if you find this one of the greatest horror movies then you clearly have no idea what good horror movies are.
22:05 love that bit where Joe is trying to explain Paimon. "That want to resurect Pay-gone or something, Pie-gon or something. Not Satan but one of the sev uhh, one of the eight Prince's of Hell" lol
so Angry Joe the way movies used to be done was they would prepare you for the scare, setting the scene, setting the mood, hyping the music cause it was too scary for adults n children. and now u basically get so used to the scares that its hard to actually judge a scary movie, cause you personally mustve seen 100 scary movies dulling your sense of "fear". versus someone who only seen 1 scary movie. n by that scale if you judge a movie by scares than an erie 1hour long beginning can be compared to any jump scares or the actual scare scenes for that person.
Me being a big horror fan I was absolutely stunned with how good this was, mainly off the fact that it didn’t have cheesy jump scares but instead throws disturbing violent scenes which really makes it stand out over cliche horror films
THIS ONE IS THE GOLD STANDARD FOR HORROR MOVIES AVERAGE IN THIS GENRE IS A DISMAL 3.5/10 BUT HEREDITARY: 9/10 THE ENDING AND THE POLITE LADY WHO WAS DOING MISCHIEVOUS STUFF (I ACTUALLY DIDN'T EVEN PICK THIS UP UNTIL AFTER THE MOVIE) TOTALLY CAUGHT ME OFF GUARD AS WELL AS THE PART WHERE A LITTLE SOMEONE DIES!
Brother this movie filled me w/ so much dread I got excited for the horror genre again. I felt no hope by the end of this it was just pure misery ha...that's how you fucking make a horror film.
Alternate universe where 1 hour was cut: “The ending was good but I just don’t care about these characters!! The director showed no backstory to any of the family, why should we care about them? Grrrrr”
Bruh this movie is a 9 out of 10. You guys get bored way to easily. Just because crazy stuff isn't happening doesn't mean that it's bad. Ya'll said the same thing in Get Out but that movie builds the characters and tbh the whole entire thing is creepy even the so called " slow burn stuff"
The doll houses repersent the insignificance of the families efforts. The light throughout the movie the ripples around is like a magnifying glass similar to the one the mother uses on her doll house to signify the control of something larger.
This movie isn’t about the scares. This is a very thematic and story driven film about grief, loss, family secrets. The story was wonderful and engaging and made every moment in the third act have weight. The movie is horrific through out. Not because of the “bump in the night” scary moments, but it’s the events and tragedies that happen to the family that unsettle you and hurt you. The emotional rollercoaster the characters go through in the first half is what’s horrific. Movies like this and The Witch are so refreshing from films like The Conjuring, etc. because it focuses on the story and the drama. It isn’t a vehicle for “what cool scares can we have in this scene.” Plus this movie felt more real than any horror movie recently, and that added a lot. This movie felt like it could actually happen.
I think Marvels Infinity War was one of the very...very few movie reviews where Alex actually enjoyed. Maybe it's just not up to his standards kind of like how Angry Joe rips into some games.
Some people just dont have the mind to receive whats this movie is doing. Its aimed towards a special audience. I watched it after I saw Midsommar and was super hyped because I freaking love Midsommar. I think it is not as good as Midsommar, cause I hoped there wouldnt be like this supernatural stuff. The ouija thing takes me out of the mood cause it is always the same in every horror movie. But there is a lot more in this movie you cannot understand by just watching it once and without additional informations. Plus the acting and the soundtrack are really top notch. Its not that the songs from the soundtrack are super nice, its the elements the composer was using and everything has a meaning. It gets more genius the more you know about it.
These guys can't be trusted when it comes to movies like at all. "There were no jumpscares" followed by "I was okay with that" is basically all you need to hear to know it's bullshit
Can anyone tell me of a review where Alex isn't sitting there looking mad pissed off and bored, like why is he on the show when he just looks pissed at Joe and the film every time
Idk, I feel like if I was Alex I'd be the same way, most movies people hype up and say are scary are just meh to me. To me it wouldnt even be considered a horror movie, it's more of a thriller. Also can you show me a review where Joe doesn't cut Alex or OJ off?
Kind of a shame they really missed out on a lot of the hidden meanings, analogies within the movie. The bigger picture of the entire trauma behind the family and the pure evilness of the grandmother. The dollhouse represents the family and how they have no control of their fate, the grandmother trying to put Paimon into the children at a young age and killing Charlie to start everything. Pacing was perfect and the second act wraps up quick but its perfect. Definitely similar to movies like Midsommar and Lighthouse. This is a psychological horror and it needs your patience.
Angry Joe gotta get this mainstream guys outta here. I just don't understand, this film is very well done. If you were bored it probably speaks to your attention span and ability to comprehend an intense family dynamic. Let em go watch slasher movie or some other bs.
She said she hadn’t done it in years. But she does say “my brother kept saying he tried to put people inside of me”. Lots of little details like that are noticed on the second watch
2:30 in and Im done with you guys. I wasn’t “waiting... and waiting... and waiting” for shit bro! This ain’t some crowd pleaser popcorn thrasher movie. This was a horror film for people with brains. People who love QUALITY over quantity. People who appreciate a film with a compelling narrative and fascinating characters. People who will diagnose this movie the entire ride home and then some.
How is the 1st hour boring dude? A horror film that actually builds character development in a great way? Sign me up. I'm pretty picky about horror films, because predictable bullshit kind of turns me off, but man, I watched this tonight, and 10 fingers up. I'm rejuvinated from bad horror flicks. finally. I do agree though, if you cut an hour of film time and it's quality content, people wanting to see even a better movie, like myself, would take the time to do so.

Fuck, that was smart
Also he played Satan in End Of Days and in that he set people on fire.
I think we can all agree that head banging scene was DEEPLY disturbing!
Zachary Rodriguez That and the piano wire self-decapitation scene. The fucking look in her eyes while shes cutting her head.... very disturbing
Tik Taco yeah that part was pretty twisted! The fact that she was cutting her head off even faster and faster each time the music got louder and louder was pretty disturbing

@@antsinmypantsallday You can't deny it was at least a bit boring in the beginning. It takes a while to get started.

I wouldn't call it impatience. It has much to do with pacing, which is quite important in movies.
The dollhouse was an analogy for the family, helpless to outside forces
No fate... no fate but what we make
I’m glad someone put this out there.
EXACTLY, Joe totally missed this which makes me question his capacity to do these reviews
But the dollhouse wasnt needed. Take it out of the story and it doesnt change
I thought of it as a soft manifestation of the inherited schizophrenia. A genetically inherited connection (propensity for schizo) to this treacherous quadrant of the spirit world, expressing itself through a woman's desire to build voodoo-doll-like objects.
I personally disagree, the pacing was spot on... In fact everything was spot on, one of the best (horror) movie since years.
It was perfect
Ghost Wolf perfection is boring
It’s predictable
Well I agree with the Opinion in the Video, I think it was good but it didn't nearly impress like evwryone is saying here. And 66% on Rotten Tomatoes reflects that, too.
I don't even know why people are so mad 7/10 is still a very good score. It just means thwy could have done some stuff a little bit different.
I personally liked Midsommar more because it was so good and so different from what I've seen in horror before
@The Flower of Spades Really? You predicted a demon king was possessing the daughter with peanut allergies? Interesting
I think the slow burn is what made it so scary. I strongly disagree with such a low score. I think a high 8 or 9.
Spaz Bou remember: these are the guys that said suicide squad is a good movie. Don't expect them to do any remotely competent film criticism
You all are so funny. 7 isn't low at all. If 5 is average then 7 is way above that and just shows that it is a good film. Everybody acting ao butthurt just because they don't hype it that much. I agree with them, I would have done some parts differently. And I watched a lot of movies especially horror.
Slow burns are always better. Less is more with horror that way it has more of an impact
Shouldnt have marketed it as a horror film.
It's more of a mystery/thriller film.
yeah but actually no. the movie was dog shit
The fact this has no jump scares is exactly why it's so good.
It literally has jump scares
@@fans-ed1td i watched the movie and didnt notice any
This video is why horror movies focus on jump scares so much because many people find it boring and not scary without them.
instead of jump scares they introduce shock and dread build up moments like Charlie’s head in the road the desk scene the dad burning scene the mom sawing her head off scene the naked people hiding in the woods scene
The Charlie's death scene in the first hour alone make this movie most terrifying
Disturbing, not terrifying. I was never scared once and the ending made me laugh when the mom was swimming in the air.

Hereditary, Arrival, and Blade Runner are apparently not as good as great films such as Suicide Squad and Justice League. /s
His word isn't god but more of a guide or suggestion.
he was right about blade runner
who cares Thank you
Frak 8117 couldnt agree more.. this is the age of the big comic book films..
It builds tension. I was hooked immediately and it never let me go. It needed to be that way to build up everything.
Levi Hogan Exactly. The first hour of this film was fucking great, I don’t even understand why they thought it was boring .
Holden Taylor they hate when there is no action for at least 10 minutes
David Alonso They really do. That’s the case for almost every movie review I watch from Joe and his pals. I will say, my ONLY gripe with the movie was the that the ending was rushed.
I agree, I was super invested and interested. I went in ready to appreciate everything and I was happy seeing the characters go about stuff. I really liked it
Holden Taylor my only gripes was the ending felt a little rushed and the big exposition scene in the final moment of the film.
I physically don't understand how someone can be bored watching this film! It's constantly tense!
Michael Charron it’s boring as shit, plain and simple

Infact. King Paimon didn't even become relevant to the story until pretty much the very end.

SPOILERSSPOILERSSPOILERSSPOILERSSPOILERSSPOILERS
Rather, all that buildup, all that emotional manipulation, all that suspense, and the ending was......."we're bringing a demon into the world." That just seemed like a copout to me.
If I recall there was never if maybe just a couple jumpscares the rest of the film was entirely just in your face creepiness.
guitarman0365 There was one here but it was executed so well. You actually didn't see it coming because you were so focused on the dark.
Yeah this movie had one very well done jumpscare and one thing that made it so good was that it didn't have the fucking obnoxiously loud sound effect that every horror movie has

I honestly think it's just the nostalgia effect. People seem to like to make movies a lot better over time just because it's old.
I agree, audiences have become so impatient. Movies are supposed to be like theme park rides now.

I didnt mind the length. I kept on my toes the whole time and i felt invested
"I thought the doll houses would play out more"
They did, you just have to pick up on things.

This movie will be like “The thing”, in that it will be appreciated more in 25 years from now.
Hereditary is a MASTERPIECE!
In curing insomnia yes
You DO UNDERSTAND that this is just your and others opinion, right?
how!? please explain.
I'm kinda late but YES its a literal nightmare finding myself creeped out the entire time i'm watching
The Dude agreed
NJF Productions film student? 😂 must be tough.
im nowhere near a critic but I did enjoy this movie all the way through.
Casual watcher or not, in my opinion, great film. Really well done. I've been waiting for a great flick like this for a long time.
The ending of this movie really reminds me of The Witch
Andrew Castelli yeah except this one is more violent.
During joes review on the screen behind him it says 'from the producer of The Witch'
Ztormrageheero yeah its the two people who run a24 which produced the witch and this.
ill have to keep an eye out for A24 then because I like their shit
Ace Zachrocks no i wasn't expecting to be violent
They want action from the jump and no world/story building. Giving this film a 7 is a pitiful.
honestly its a 9.5 - 10. Even backtracking the movie now and seeing subtle things like the Paimon engraved on the pole as they are driving TO the party. FUCK this movie was so good.
Agreed. It demands your attention
It SUCKED!!!!
Stick to your Insidious movies
Parker Allen god your pretentious
So you basically would prefer wooden characters just to get to the scares faster. Basically a shitty horror film. Gotcha...👌
Joey Merk way to misrepresent their opinions.
Trump supporter found!
Snoopy Fod What does being a trump supporter have to do with anything?
Delicious SHOOKY is hella thicc I was just giving a stupid response to a stupid comment, haha.
Joey Merk shitty? Um it got a 93% on RT
ImpalerGaming I'm defending the movie numbnut. The other Joe was complaining about the how the movie sucked because it took to long to get to the scares because it had great character development. He was expecting Annabelle.. Lol
Clearly these 3 are very clueless about Horror films...
Edward du feu They are too used to jump scare jump scare horror.
Ye this makes sense, the 2 Joe's only seem to give good scores for simple films / blockbusters (most of the time anyway). Guy on left just hates everything and is to be ignored in EVERY movie review.
correction: ... very clueless about films...
He should stick to reviewing games.
Especially the boring ass guy on the left
What I take from the couple of reviews I've heard of this film, is that nobody actually wants a horror film. They want a psychological thriller about a family that's breaking apart, not a horror movie.
Seosamh Wray it's not just psychological, but an occult/paranormal movie meets family drama, with a handful of scenes that would qualify as horror. I saw it last night.
Ayyy not a common last name lol. Keep the bloodline strong
Nah they just want a good movie, which this was
it IS a horror movie though. why don’t you watch it and judge for yourself
I wanted a horror film. What I got was bored as shit for 100 minutes.
This is higher than a 7 for sure. The most unique horror film I've seen in years and left me feeling scared for hours afterwards. That's rare
I guess you guys have never seen
Rosemary’s Baby
The Shining
The Witch
The Haunting
And any horror that’s not a jumpscare piece of shit. I understand opinions but you guys are so impatient.
Yeah this POS did not have jump scares. It had no scares or even tension building up. Just like that turd "The Witch" without any pay off. Just watch porn instead wasting your life on this.
@@sdry uhh.. such a damn great movie
Rosemary's Baby wasn't really that slow tbh. Neither was the Shining for that matter. In either case, the payoff and stories worked a hell of a lot better than Hereditary.
Is Alex happy about anything ?
billy boombastic No he’s probably lonely and just has a sad life. That’s why he rarely ever smiles or acts excited.
i think i rember 1 movie he liked... but dont rember witch one.
alex is me tbh lol
billy boombastic I don't like him
Only when he's throwing cardboard boxes really hard at girls.
Why does Joe talk so much in the cinema? Does he not realize how inconsiderate that is to other people?
SPOILERS******
When Annie is going through her mother's things in the attic around the start of act 3, she finds an embroidered mat her grandma is known to make with the name "charles" on it.
Charles is the name of Annie's brother
Y’all get bored when you don’t relate.
I freaking loved this film. It was amazingly well made. Still sticks with me to this day.
"How does she casually mention she almost set her kids on fire" it should have been vomited in exposition in the first 5 minutes i guess
I respectfully disagree, I found the pacing was perfect I was never bored for 1 second it was perfectly paced in my opinion!
It's a good horror movie I'm a grown man and haven't been scared from a movie since I was a kid this genuinely gave me the chills
I was terrified throughout the whole movie , even when nothing was happening.
Exactly, something was always fucking happening (even when we think it wasn't). The amount of easter eggs in this film associated w/ pagan rituals are amazing. The words, symbolism, and even the ending music is associated w/ the demon "Paimon" who is said to love that similar bell sound. Here's some info from a article I found:
"Paimon: Is also frequently written "Paymon', and sometimes "Paimonia'. Probably from Hebrew, POMN, = a tinkling sound or small bell. This is again derived from the Hebrew root POM, = to agitate, impel, or strike forward"
The attention to detail is under appreciated. I swear these guys have no skill at reading between the lines, or appreciating build up.
For those short on time he gives it a 7/10
Redwingz Ftw thanks bud
Redwingz Ftw thanks
Redwingz Ftw too damn low! I’d give it a 9.7/10! My only gripe is that the exposition wasn’t the best.
gods bless you =] thanks
@@JPQFilms Be man! No decimal points allowed on this show!
when you review movies but you don't know anything about what makes a movie good.................
try actually paying attention next time
The exorcist felt like a movie. Hereditary felt like a nightmare
the guy on the left hates everything lol
Alex Sutton He is more critical than Joe and other Joe.
Alex Sutton He’s just not as easily pleased compared to losers like you.
Blade Runner lol mad much kiddo?
Who cares what these nerds think lol
Pretentious af
A24 studios are awesome
Steven Bowen Legit they've been killing it with films, especially horror. Can't wait for the next one
they're utterly shit, pointless, not scary and only made for hipster wannabe reviewers acting smart on the internet
@Jamie Mcvay i disagree there's a lot people watches there movies
"Wow it's actually good"
Justin Y. ur everywhere but I respect you for that
You should improve your joke a bit. It's getting a bit too. . . Bland? Just my opinion
What's your channel about?
justin you're everywhere. i seriously want a button so that you don't even see some youtubers comments at this point...
also i think you're liking your own comments.
oh hey
personally i think this is one of the greatest horror movies i have ever seen; alex says there was no payoff for some things, which is awesome ! imagine a movie making you ask questions these days, everything major is answered as long as you pay enough attention and aren’t checking your watch....
one of the greatest? that means you have literally never seen good horror movies then? never watched asian horrors have you. if you find this one of the greatest horror movies then you clearly have no idea what good horror movies are.
It was not a slow burn. It was really good movie. It was probably one of the best horror movies I have ever seen.
I think it objectively IS a slow burn. But being a slow burn isn't inherently a bad thing! You can well paced, and engaging slow burns
I can just imagine Alex in the thumb nail with his hands to his face but if you remove the hands his face would be blank...
WheresMyBuns LMFAO I'm DYINGGG 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂sooooo tru
Thats because everything about him is BLANK.....
True
that guy is a piece of wood
"Im gonna let alex talk now..." trails off and doesnt let alex talk for 5 minutes. Oh joe
Devin Anni that’s a good thing though. Every time Alex talks it’s painful.
Its the AngryJoeShow not the AngryAlexShow
22:05 love that bit where Joe is trying to explain Paimon. "That want to resurect Pay-gone or something, Pie-gon or something. Not Satan but one of the sev uhh, one of the eight Prince's of Hell" lol
The director basically said all the characters in the movie were the dolls in the doll house, because of their lack of control in their own lives
“You are lubed up”
-Angry Joe 2018
so Angry Joe the way movies used to be done was they would prepare you for the scare, setting the scene, setting the mood, hyping the music cause it was too scary for adults n children. and now u basically get so used to the scares that its hard to actually judge a scary movie, cause you personally mustve seen 100 scary movies dulling your sense of "fear". versus someone who only seen 1 scary movie. n by that scale if you judge a movie by scares than an erie 1hour long beginning can be compared to any jump scares or the actual scare scenes for that person.
It was great. Honestly one of the best horror films ive seen in years. These guys are plebs.
Me being a big horror fan I was absolutely stunned with how good this was, mainly off the fact that it didn’t have cheesy jump scares but instead throws disturbing violent scenes which really makes it stand out over cliche horror films
I'll take a slow boil with a good payoff over a texas chainsaw remake ANY FUCKING DAY. Ari Aster is a genius.
THIS ONE IS THE GOLD STANDARD FOR HORROR MOVIES
AVERAGE IN THIS GENRE IS A DISMAL 3.5/10 BUT HEREDITARY: 9/10
THE ENDING AND THE POLITE LADY WHO WAS DOING MISCHIEVOUS STUFF (I ACTUALLY DIDN'T EVEN PICK THIS UP UNTIL AFTER THE MOVIE) TOTALLY CAUGHT ME OFF GUARD AS WELL AS THE PART WHERE A LITTLE SOMEONE DIES!
This movie was blowing up my Google news feed. Got shivers just from the media push and well done trailers. Can't wait to see it.
Mike Iervolino see it, it's good. If you know it's a slow burn at the beginning and just wait it's worth it.
one of the rare times i disagree with you
this is one of the best horror movies of the last 20 or more years
Brother this movie filled me w/ so much dread I got excited for the horror genre again. I felt no hope by the end of this it was just pure misery ha...that's how you fucking make a horror film.
in my theater people laughed when peter started crying on his dads shoulder after the seance
Alternate universe where 1 hour was cut:
“The ending was good but I just don’t care about these characters!!
Beard guy is such a debbie downer
Tyler D. So every movie sucks? Cuz that's how he acts
dementedavenger2784 different taste I guess
I think Marvels Infinity War was one of the very...very few movie reviews where Alex actually enjoyed. Maybe it's just not up to his standards kind of like how Angry Joe rips into some games.
Beard Guy aka Big Joe, and Fat Joe, and Swole Joe
Ya he is kind of depressing
Paegan went inside the mom after the husband was burned alive. Paegan used piano wire to cut the moms head off to get out of her body to enter Peter
Yep pretty much.
Can anyone tell me of a review where Alex isn't sitting there looking mad pissed off and bored, like why is he on the show when he just looks pissed at Joe and the film every time
That's just his resting bitch face, unfortunately.
LastRenegade yeah, just him trying not to care and be edgy. Nothing really wrong with that.
Idk, I feel like if I was Alex I'd be the same way, most movies people hype up and say are scary are just meh to me. To me it wouldnt even be considered a horror movie, it's more of a thriller. Also can you show me a review where Joe doesn't cut Alex or OJ off?
N. D. Nope
Vannia Cuervo damn I love you girl
The dollhouse scenes do play out. The opening shot basically establishes the cult is the playing the family like dolls.
You're wearing a Superman shirt with a coat that's supposed to be used with a full suit, therefore, your opinion doesn't count.
It just dawned on me!
Why did the mother STOP sleepwalking???
Because Grandma died!
The “doll houses” were there to show you that they were pawns being manipulated by an outside source.
