Hello Jon, I finished my Computational Physics PhD a few months ago and followed up with an internship as a Software Engineer. The internship was 10 weeks and did not turn into a full time position as the company is currently not hiring entry-level roles. They said that when a role opens, they would think of me first. As well, about 5 people, including two Software Engineering managers, offered to write recommendation letters for me. The founder of the company even told me that he protested twice to keep me. Now, I have been looking for new jobs for over a week and am wondering if companies who look at my LinkedIn Profile or Resume are concerned about the fact that I did not get hired by my previous employers. What is your opinion and what do you think I should do about this? Should I ask my previous employers to write a recommendation on my LinkedIn profile?

By the way, I am looking for roles as a Software Engineer or Data Scientist.

But regarding your question, I don’t think you need to be worried about your internship not panning out into an FTE position. It’s pretty normal, and also every company gets interns for different reasons (regardless of whether they can convert it to FTE/contract or not). If anything, I think you can really lean into it as industry experience so that future employers will not be as concerned about the lack of real world experience.
Recommendations do help, and personally, I do skim whether people have them on their LinkedIn profiles as it gives more context.

Do you have any work experience outside of the 10 week internship? I don't think you should target entry-level roles. A new PhD with some work experience would be at the level of someone with 4 years of work experience.

Any plans to review Everything everywhere all at once? I'd like to hear your take on this disfunctional movie.

I’ve talked about it with some friends and have thoughts… what did you think about the movie?

@@DrJonTam To be honest, it was a overwrought absurdist movie that's undeserving of it's 2 plus hour runtime. I cannot describe it in short words. It was a family drama, a sci-fi dimensional kungfu movie, and a mother daughter drama. If I were the studio exec, I'd tell them to get to the point. It's 3 movies in 1 with no connective tissue.
The sci-fi element could be cut out. It's about regrets and choices not taken. It could be Dicken's Christmas Carol. Multi-dimensions is over-used like Endgame. The gay daughter story is so tacked on just to get ESG scores.
The 3 leads were fine. But the daughter is fugly. Wayman is used as exposition dump. Yeoh's performance was nothing exceptional. Other than we rarely see her really act.
Finally, it won the oscars but for what? Awards are all fake and paid for. It also won the golden globes, SAG, producers guild, directors guild, BAFTA, and 35 in total. Hollywood has been criticized for being too white, now it went overboard. Statistically it is impossible to win the lottery 35X in a row. Everyone and their dog voted for it. It's a conspiracy.

@@sitoudien9816 I can't say I disagree with any of that. It is a shame that it replaced The Return of the King as the winningest film at the Oscars.
