I am a 78 yrs old ex deep-shaft coalminer..started down the mines in 1959 aged 15 yrs in the Northumberland Coalfield here in the UK. Every time I hear this song by Rita,I fill up...thinking about not only my own Marra's who were killed and maimed [including myself],down the stinking black hell-hole..but of those around the world..and recently the Chinese Miners who perished in a terrible Gas explosion.Miners are Miners the world over..no political differences..we are bonded as one..This is a beatiful Tribute to us all.R.I.P. Rita. from Bill in Beatiful Northumbria in the UK.
The cold miners in Cape Breton worked the miners under the St Lawrence. I had a lot of empathy for those guys. There wives worked in the Cape Breton hospital to keep those boys alive from lung issues. I worked with the Canadian Ice Patrol out or Halifax at the time. Rita Macneal song never let us forget what those miners went through.
My family where miners my great uncles and my great grandfather was killed underground and my lovely boyfriend was injured underground what a lovely tribute to all miners all over the uk xxx
The Armed Forces AND the Miners won this country's freedom from Hitler's grasp..without either ..we would all be speaking German..those that were left that is..Full Gratitude to both Armies of men...and all those around the world who are sent into battle by thier leaders..and those who work underground..wherever they may be..
The wonderful Rita McNeil. I had the great pleasure of seeing her live in Cardiff, South Wales. For this song she was accompanied by a Welsh Male Voice Choir who were dressed as miners. What a performance. Not a dry eye in the house . RIP Sweet Lady.
I’m a miner…. I’m Scottish but work UG in Western Australia. I’m proud of my heritage and wish I could have seen this gem being sung Live. Love to Canada. ❤️
Hi Ian, I am from Blantyre and visited 3 weeks ago and saw the memorial from the Blantyre Colliery disaster October 1877. Over 200 men and boys died. I didnt realise there were youg boys. This song is a tribute to them. Keep safe. Sandy
We lay our father to rest tomorrow and this song will be playing, his whole working life as a miner he said he made friends underground that lasted a lifetime
I also laid my dad to rest just over a year ago, and he too made life long friends down there. Those miners were a tight knit community and salt of the earth. Thing is I almost didn’t get to know him as he was crushed in a coal face collapse, but he survived and I had him till he was 89 .
Sung at the funeral of my oldest brother's best friend. They'd won ground together in Geevor, west Cornwall (look it up). Hard rock men. RIP Leonard Sullivan.
I have heard this song by some wonderful singers and Rita is as good as any of them and better than most of them. It brings me to tears every time I hear her sing this heart breaking song. She was taken from us way too soon. RIP Gods angel
From the Deadliest Catch fishing the Bering Sea 1) to the 2) most dangerous job in the world......Coal Mining....she done a beautiful job..... from her beautiful ❤️.... (R.I.P) Rita...!!!
Wonderful song. Rita was one of my late mother's favourite singers, and we saw her together at Alumni Hall in London, Ontario. Both Rita and Mum are gone now. A very special song as my grandfather was a coal miner in Scotland before emigrating to Canada.
I must have listened to this thousands of times and it always brings a lump to my throat. It is such an evocative song and Rita had a voice par excellence. RIP Rita
I have no words to add to those glorious words expressed before me. I will just sit here, with respect, and weep with the beauty of this song and its singer and composer. RIP Rita.
What a wonderful sweet voice, from a humble caper as her star rose, she remained unchanged,no Ego there part of Cape Breatons music factory,A true inspiration, thank you Rita for sharing your talents with the world 🌎 ❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉😊

Trailer Park Boys sent me here. I’m an American who never heard of her but wow what a voice. Hats off to TPB for having the humor and class to bring her on.
I’m from the Canadian prairies, and never heard of her either until TPB. It’s funny how most of the comments on any UA-cam video of her doing this song, references TPB😂

Beautiful song. I crossed paths with this fine lady once at Halifax airport in 1995 I think it was. I was rushing for my flight and turned the corner and we came face to face. She gave me a beautiful and genuine smile under a broad rimmed hat. She was wearing a lovely flowered dress I recall. We didn't speak as I was in a rush and only realized who it was after we'd passed but I will always remember her smile.
One of my enduring memories is of a retired Forest of Dean miner walking up the hill past Cinderford Library. He would take about 20 paces then stop to use his oxygen bottle before resting and then taking another 20 steps. I also had relations who worked in the mines.
Have just travelled thru Canada. What a stunning country. Have had Rita's music for many years, ( actually on a tape!!). Brilliant singer Marelle, South Australia
