Yeah cuz actually making an effort to develop both the heroes and villains would be far too taxing on the writers and directors and producers and the viewing audiences when the real point of shows like these is just to sell toys and nothing else, right?

A sentai episode where they prevent the monster from growing is almost as rare as a series that DOESN'T use Korakuen/Tokyo Dome amusement park as a filming location.

    • @TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork

That's not entirely true. There have been several episodes in the 90s that wouldn't have a monster grow. Hell, both Dairanger and Zyuranger have full episodes without a single mech showing up.

I actually feel the Changeman monsters are some of the most original in Sentai, because, being aliens from different planets, they all look very different, obviously different species, not based on Earth creatures, folklore or objects, like so many Sentai series' monsters are. (I think Flashman does the same thing)
Lately, I've been wondering if, at least some of the monsters are sneaky homages to Ultra Kaiju (especially Ultraseven, where the monsters were all aliens from different planets). Aside form the obvious Metron-Seijin homage, I feel others might be homages.

Changeman is the one that was on when I was a kid and I remember if fondly. The toys were *great,* less silly and non-functional than some of the later ones. I had the shuttle/mech, the blaster, and some figures at the time.

    • @TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork

That sounds cool. There are some really good aspects to Changeman, such as the heavy focus on developing the villains (the first for Sentai), but at the same time, I felt it sacrificed its ranger cast's development for that.

16:34,there was a reason why most of early Sentai robos were blue and looked like Voltes V and Dairugger XV. Back in 1980, Ideon's toys weren't selling well and it was red so Bandai decided to color their robos blue starting with DaiDenjin because they wouldn't want kids to associate it with Ideon which left a bad taste and Clover were the ones who made the Ideon toys, not Bandai.
Speaking of Vehicle Voltron, would you be reviewing that anime?

I try to view the various series from the perspective of where they fit into the entire sentai evolution. At the time, Changeman was a huge innovation from everything before. (I am bias because it is the first sentai series I really watched a lot of). It took the super sentai series into space opera territory, and was less earthbound than ever before.
I loved the military and generally straightforward tone of the team and the show. It's not like 'character development' is everything. (these days, a lot of tokusatsu has adopted a LOT of drama into its mix, which I love, but also love it without it) It's liek hard sci-fi to me, where its not about the characters, but it's about the premise. To me, Changeman is strong because the characters ARE as stoic as they are, and not prone to the typical soap opera-ish antics so common today.
The focus was on the concept, the monsters, the battles, the MUSIC!, and the wild FX (which were super experimental at the time). I LOVE when toku pushes the boundaries with crazy FX (not just the tried-and-true)
Bioman had been a real experiment with sentai formula. Changeman returned to previous sentai forumla but very modernized (at the time, of course) and a more sci-fi feel. I thought it was a turning point in super sentai

There were definitely highlights to Changeman. Not everything worked for me, but I do give it credit for what it did to the series. Still, I just can't ignore the poor characterization I had with the rangers, but that was just a common problem in general with everything until Jetman.
      Thanks btw. :-)

    • @pendaflux
      @pendaflux 2 роки тому

I agree with you about how characterization doesn't have to be fleshed out. I find it fun to try and fill in the blanks. Did Phoenix have a thing for Mermaid before she saw Mermaid and Dragon shake hands? Were Dragon and Mermaid on a date while they were dodging bombs? How did Mermaid and Phoenix develop so many combo attacks? Does Dragon yell at Griffon every time he goes missing? I'd rather think about these things than actually see them, for some reason.

The show was originally going to have a space exploration motif. While it was changed to a military motif at the end, traces of the original motif are still evident in the design of the Change Robo and the Shuttlebase, not to mention the fact that the villains are space aliens. And possibly, the choice of final title was influenced by this, as the team's symbol is a "CM" which could stand for either Cosmoman or Changeman.

  • @02Justin10

I'm 37 episodes into the series and I am enjoying it a lot. Probably a tad less than Megaranger, but a tad more than Turboranger.
I totally get that the show failed to truly develop these characters as much as they could have. However, when I match that up against the suits, the fights, the music, and their acting, it still comes out well to me.
My favorite is Mai/Pink/Change Phoenix. It is refreshing to have a more tomboy like pink ranger. I adored Cassie on Power Rangers in Space and Mai reminds me of her.
The cast in this season is very pretty. Whether we know about them or not, they are easy on the eyes.
Lastly, I enjoy Power Rangers/Super Sentai episodes where the team is split up into smaller segments. And several times in this series they do just that. I love the episode when Red & Black spend all that time trying to rush the blood to the hospital.

I’ve finally managed to get through it after I took a break! I’ve finished gorenger (season 1) to Changeman (season 9) + the movies of them!
After the first couple of episode were rough it developed itself into the best season out of the first 9! I’ll give it a 8 out of 10!
The first couple of episodes seemed like a complete mess but it made sense when u stick around and when the story unfolds!
I can’t believe how serialized this show was (I mean it became more serialized since BFJ) and how much they put into this show! I didn’t expect such an ensemble cast where every character is important to the story in the end!
I really felt sorry for Shima, Gator + his family, Baboo and even Ahames.. Bazoo destroyed their planets and forced them to serve him and they did this coz they wanted to survive and to get home!
The design of the ranger costumes was epic. I struggled with the design of the enemies at first but got to love them.
I’m still shocked how much they put into Giluke! He had 4 effin forms lol
I’m so happy we got 4 more episodes as actually planned coz the rangers were so likeable and the side characters! It’s a Mystic Force situation where rangers are important to the story but the side characters have the most key elements to the story! I loved the Riegel Aura Plot! The endgame arc + Ahames introduction.. Perfectly written! I actually loved it too that Sayaka was the tech brain and not a male ranger again!
Only the first couple of episodes were odd. That’s why I can’t give it a 9/10 or 10/10. But a strong 8/10 but it definitely beats Bioman in my opinion!

The idea behind is that Uba`s milk corrupted her true essence and she grew wicked since her infant times. Later, when Buuba "killed" her in his last episode, she woke up with her woman voice and asked Buuba "you didn`t kill me, I was sleeping for a while and I woke up", then he answers "No, you died, and then you woke up as your true self", kinda like she could be acquitted from everything she did in her life because the being that she was since always was not actually she...

Well I have just finish watching Changeman for my Super Sentai Marathon and overall I actully really enjoy it.
For one I really enjoyed a lot Monster designs as a lot of them feel very alien and are probably my favorite roster of monsters so far.
I liked a lot of the focus episodes on the main heroes especially when they encounter other aliens. And how the show starts out mostly light and comedic before gradually getting more darker and more dramatic as it progresses. with the endgame arc being among my favorites.
And even the main villains I would say are probably the best so far as I like how some of them changed and later switched sides near the end of the show. While villains such as Giluke and Adames get cooler as the season progressed.
Sadly Bazoo was a pretty boring and disappointing main villain especially being after Dr. Man. and while the twist revile of him being a Planet with a hologragic projection is a novel idea it doesn't really make him that great or memorable as the other villains. and he also goes down really easy despite how he was build up as being really powerful
I also really enjoyed the Main Heroes and there probably among my favorite team so far in these early showa seasons. Though much like before I’ve been noticing how a lot of these early Sentai teams is that while they do have personality, have a good amount of focus episodes and are pretty likeable they don’t really have any character arcs so they remain mostly the same as they are in the beginning as they are at the end, so I guess it will be a while till I come across a season with a team with proper character arcs.
The action was pretty good outside of the really bad blue screen effects, and unfortunately the mech battles reverted back to how they were before Bioman which is a bit disappointing though I did like how it introduced mech battles underwater.
So while I can’t say I really liked Changeman as much as Bioman, I actually did enjoyed this season more and more as it progressed with the final 10 episodes being among my favorite episodes, making it probably my 2nd favorite season so far.
and next time I'll finally will watch Flashman which looks really promising. and I've been really likening these few 80's shows so far.
