Three Vintage Stratocasters - 1954, 1955, 1956

  • The 1954 was refinished at the Fender factory in 1961. The 1955 and 1956 are original. All pickups and pots are original. All three guitars have had 5-way switches installed. Amps are played dry through a 1960 tweed Bassman by the coolest guy in Tulsa, Steve "Doc" Hickerson at Guitar Technical Services.

Much agreed. I have a theory, after 59 years of playing, that the more electricity that trickles through pickups or speakers or amp parts, the better they sound. Check out the Klein '56 pickups ... incredible match to this guitar, IMHO.

My 1st guitar in '63 was a 1962 pre CBS start sunburst with a rosewood fret board, But I used to borrow my brothers Burns special edition Vista Sonic and he preferred my strat, playing the Burns was a dream, you couldn't feel the frets and strings, once we played a straight through 5 1/2 hour session with no fatigue

I like the 5 way switch as much as any Strat player but I've never installed one in my '61 in the 21 years I've owned and played it, why? The older switches are easier to manipulate the 2nd and 5th spot, not much harder than on a real 5-way and from what I see the solder joints look original, meaning that the players before me had no major issue with it.
