As a thumb rule, 100 - Age should be the equity allocation. If the age is 30 yrs, 70% can be an ideal equity allocation.
Before investing, we should make sure the basics are covered(term, health Insurance and emergency fund). Then either you can go for index funds or direct equity after research. You can even invest in government securities such as Bonds and Tbills if you have a demat account.
