This IS The MOST Romantic music video ever !
Sonic Youth rules!
For " some people". Not everyone.
World 🌎 is bigger than you
can we just talk about how absolutely incredible the riff is? this song has completely changed my life
I actually needed to relax and the riff came to mind. 🤘
IKR its so youthful and teenage years defining
luv ur pfp btw x
you got that right man. you know Kurt Cobain loved sonic youth
The guitar parts are one of several good reasons why most alternative music from the mid 80s til now can trace back to this band. Sonic Youth is one of the most underrated seminal bands.
This has got to be the most 90s thing I've ever seen.
Sorry to be technical, but the album was released in spring 1990 so chances are high the song was made in the eighties..
It's like something straight from a movie
Yu Yu hakusho is more
Oh My !!!!!
This is what people mean when they say "trendsetters". Or, in a nod to Gen X cynical flourish, "90's Alternative Fan Starter Pack". If you think it's an accident, I've got a bridge you're gonna love...
i could actually live my whole life inside this music video
me too!!
Maybe in our virtual reality future we might be able to?
@@tomread8748you can do this in vr but of course the graphics still look like cheap lego blocks.
@@NeroLeMorte We need a Sonic Youth VR Minecraft remake, somehow.
Actually did live this back then, for awhile, then we got older.
I was in my 20s in the 90s, and this video is completely realistic, except that (as others have commented) everyone is a little too clean. This is exactly what this felt like.
90’s were such a nice Yang to the stuffy shit fashion that we dealt with in the 80’s!
So was I - it was awesome
A blinkered dirtbag no less
Same. We were *fairly* clean. Maybe not the kids from Forestries
I can say I fell into the little too clean category, no smoking, no drugs or drinking shaving everyday, still hadn’t got laid yet. Yeah we existed 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Fun fact: the parents of an old therapist I had, who was also one of the youngest witnesses to Nirvana's rise pre-Nevermind, were extras in the video. This was shot just prior to a show during both bands' summer headlining tour after SY advised the band to sign with Geffen, since there was a bidding war to do so after the already modest success of 'Bleach'. SY's tour previous was the opening slot for Neil Young, by the way.
this song has me thurston for moore
god damn it
I don't see what you did there. I don't see it at all.
awh Kim on, no Moore of these, please...
Well played sir

I see that and it's perfect.
.. that's great(what you saying here)...100%
49. Been listening since I was 15(?) , you still take me someplace nobody else could. Nothing but love for all of you.
Thank you for decades of good memories.
49 too, glad to have been a teen in the 90s!
Went to local shows every week in Houston TX.
lol 53 in the same boat. What a great sound
This was the video that I will remember as properly surmising that generation of music. Back when people actually danced at shows, & well before everyone had their own personal video recorders that they now apparently watch the shows they attend through. Those were much better days folks, & not just because of the music.
Person I identify with the most in this video: The merch guy.
Literally me when couples are full blown PDA in public haha
mood
Who do you identify with the most in this video?
He later went to be a regular on SNL
i like all sonic youth videos but this one in particular is my favorite i think
arya stark It's definitely good, but not enough Chloe Sevigny
Bull in the Heather
Drew Case that’s there best video, Kathleen hanna dancing around in the background makes it
I 100 percent agree
I might this song a little better though
They all look far cleaner than I imagine a real Sonic Youth audience would have been back then.
No, that's pretty much what we looked like.
They had showers back then, too ;)
@@Siures Not in the clubs I frequented. Well, in the midwest. ;)
I mean, they look cleaner and neater than Kurt did in most photoshoots back in the day.
@@Anarchosyn But at home ;) Maybe German Grunge Fans are cleaner than the American ones? ;)
This video is pure nostalgia that makes you cry happy tears.
I’m damn near 50 now and I could still jam out and jump around to this like I did 30+ years ago.
That youth, that clothing, how can you not miss it...
+Teleskop I know I miss my teenage youth of 1991. thank God I'm still just as immature now as I was back then :D
+TrOllinM4sTEr lemme see in 1991 I was in my second year of college, my best friend who was a chemical engineering major at univ of tenn had a six string unibody Carvin bass which he could play like Les Claypool (Primus, Flying Frog Brigade) OR Infectious Grooves), and I was dating Sheri King, aka Cigar Chick, a Richmond Va punk rock legend in the scene who was then enrolled in Virginia Commonwealth University art school in Richmond ... best in the country for art, I graduated from VCU with a math and comp degree a year before she did due to her magnificent fuckups back in the dark days before she met me. It was a fucking good year for me and my 1974 Ford Torino, you know what I meano?
I went to see Nirvana on their last tour at William and Mary Hall... both Sonic Youth and I loved those three lads from Seattle... but I am very sad to say I never saw Sonic Youth live, mainly because they didn't come around often and I had heard their shows weren't so hot although what I've seen on UA-cam makes me regret
not seeing them. I fucking worship Kim Gordon (i play bass, look up "slave mason" in quotes two words) still and back then I literally thought of her when I was slogging Sheri haha thats what you get for igging me all these years just because I made the mistake of hooking up with... uh ok yeah man 1991 was a kick ass year and it kept getting better ya know? all the way up until the era of queens of the stone age, white stripes and my chemical romance there Kieran I name dropped mcr just for you boo boo.
ok enjoy . I love you noodles.
learningrichard thx for sharing man. loved the read u gave me. 93 is when i entered college(Pratt Institute) and i had a blast in those days too. not just 91/92.....sadly i dont think rock will ever be good again. rock is dead. yeah, white stripes elephant is like the last great kick ass rock album made, that i can think of. though there is um.....drill queen but they broke up before ever culminating enough songs into an album. they just have 3 songs. with born depressed being a song i listen to religiously. i can think of a few good soft rock bands of recent years but hard rock....nah.
Thanks... though I don't agree that hard rock is dead. Its changing but not dead. I look at a band like Muse and they have some heavy stuff out there, there are a lot of young bands too. It does help to have a cool 13 year old daughter to keep me hip.
learningrichard can i date your daughter?
I remember buying this single back in the days. Thanks Sonic Youth for all the cool music you gave us!
Hey its you
thanks for your awesome covers :D
90's rules !
@@aleksbogdanovv the piss is being taken.. Thank you
Thanks for ur awesome covers dude!
"I wear flannel because it's comfortable" -everyone in the 90's ever
I wore it unbuttoned to keep my arms warm in winter when I still wanted to sport my band shirts.
"i wear flannel because its what instagram tells me to do" - everyone today ever
Flannel and loose clothing for life!
Not according to boy banders. Haha!
We're not wrong. Its comfortable as hell.
There’s a certain magic to Sonic Youth’s music that I can’t really describe, I guess it’s the fact that it’s the nostalgic feeling you get from the music or the time capsule of the 90’s music videos. All around one of the best bands of all time.
Nope....I saw them a few times....I wasn't cool enough to get this band.
its that early 90s pete n pete vibe.
Makes me glad I turned 21 in 1990 so I could see these great bands in bars. Anyone else a veteran of the Melody Bar in New Brunswick, NJ?
u have any old t shirts u got from the 90s?
this video makes me want to be a teenager in the 90's going to concerts and shit.
+Aiden Cunningham BOI LMAO
you can still do that in the new millenium
Ian Chelig yeah but I can't see shit because people rather record the concert than enjoy it.
lol get UP there
I was a teenager during this era and it was AMAZING!
one of the finest post-punk alternative bands to come out of the 80s
post-punk? bro is noise rock
@@Yamil057 It's anything you want it to be.
It's just rock and roll
It's Sonic Youth
Technically they were No Wave in the beginning which was Nyc's answer to Punk
Wearing Nirvana T-Shirt before it was cool, in Sonic Youth vid before it was cool either :D Awesome girl!
Hipsterception?
it was still cool back then. nirvana was pretty popular.
queeneggplant yeah, but they weren't objetive of posers yet
queeneggplant When this song came out Nirvana were just on the verge of getting super popular, but weren't yet. Nevermind didn't come out for about half a year after this song did.
was gonna say the same thing. We shouldn't be surprised though. if anyone was rad enough to know who to support before the entire world knew them, it would be the fine humans in sonic youth
I wonder if Kurt lost his shit when he saw a Nirvana shirt in a Sonic Youth video.
Or if he ever got to see it at all.
Kim and Kurt were friends
Kurt wore sonic youth shirts
He definitely did.
Well what year was this from agsin sxactly bc that would determine wether he was cool about it but stoked inside or outwardly geeking out
Something so sexy about the melodies this band created. They are my summertime band to drive around to.
I love the 80`s and 90`s there was no smartphones, no internet...people went out, chat live, went to concerts, THEY LIVED THE LIFE. I hope someday we could back to that era
there were internet in the 90s
MIguel Barra yeah, but it was too different than today
Not in 2020 though. COVID.
stupid
We are going to see a "low tech" subculture emerge and go mainstream at some point. Like the Amish, but not overtly religious.
3:55 onwards has made me cry in the past. So bittersweet, so nostalgic from the sweet and heartwrenching guitar riff to the innocent and youthful video. It's just so ugh...🥲❤
I am crying as I rewatch it
These are always the best concerts. We discovered so many bands this way. Always better than the big venues.
LYRIC
Here we go to another candle I know
All the girls there playin' on a jelly roll
Time to take a ride, time to take it in a midnight eye
And if you want to go, get on below
Pinking out the day, dreaming out the crazy way
Finger on the love, it's all above
Everywhere it's six-sex-six by luck
A satellite wish will make it just enough
You'll be making out with a witch in a coffee truck
Time to rock the road and tell the story of the jelly rollin'
Dirty boots are on, hi di ho
Pinking out the black, dreaming in a crack
Satan got her tongue, now it's undone
I got some dirty boots, yeah dirty boots
I got some dirty boots, baby
Dirty boots

This is what a perfect dream would be like
we lived through the nineties. and that's forever with us. thanks Sonic Youth.
Bro Sonic Youth is so good I don’t know why I havent listened to them sooner
"Only 2 dollars to see Sonic Youth?!"
"Yeah, heheheh, that's a good deal!"

+Nicole Smashing and Sonic wrote the book, Silver high pitched whom? do you say. No offense by the way but they are 21'st century, the former had their conception back in the 80's.
When this came out i was the age of the audience members. And the bands i saw had adults as members ,but in reality they were 21 while i was 17. I had a great 20's decade playing in an originals band with our friends doing the lights and mixing. One friend taught himself to set up the pub p.a. properly and became a mixer for us and then all the indi originals bands in the city. Later he made a successful carreer opening a top level recording and production studio in Melbourne
Noone will ever be more badass than those two 16 year old lovers.
That white Nirvana shirt worn by the girl in the beginning is worth US$400 in vintage condition. Seriously.
Terence Yong atleast. More like $600. It's bleach era that's why.

Unthinkable, even at the time the video was shot.
Right , only Fugazi charged $5. Or local bands were a few bucks. But out of town bands were like around $10-12 minimum.
The intro of this song makes me go back to the 90’s
The memories... 90s such a beautiful to live your teen years. Playing in small gigs, going out with friends in "pothead philosophers" endless nights...no social media bs, no narcisism, just being your self and embrace our true selfs. at that time all was new and natural, we didnt realize that was so unique and special, just lived it. now as a 38y old i look back and... honestly? I miss it so much I can cry just typing this and remembering.
The 90's... the best era to be a young :)
No, that would be the 80s.
Maybe the 70s..
+vanostran8 Maybe the ice age...

Maybe you hang around dorks. 🤷🏼♂️
Feelings and nostalgia.
This album open 90's !
Pretty much the first video I remember seeing that was...90's style.
I saw Sonic Youth play this live in Austin, Texas in Autumn of 1990. The opening act *DRUMROLL* was a band I never heard of called "Nirvana". I Thought they were a punk band and awesome! You can see the concert I was at if you search UA-cam for "Nirvana Austin, Texas Liberty Lunch 1991". xD
Sonic Youth is so mystical. I've never felt more nostalgia for an era that I wasn't even around for more than when I listen to them. It's indescribable.
why do people call us and our cultures nostalgia it´s fucking disgusting

@@ltr54really? That's really cool!! You all did a great job 👍🏽👍🏽
When I first saw this video, a long, long time ago, I thought it was totally contrived. Sonic Youth was avant garde, but they certainly werent teeny bopper music. I never knew a single female who was into them (except the bassist). I couldn't imagine a scene like that, where a bunch of teens, girls and guys go to a S.Y. concert to meet each other. I actually did see them in concert once in Santa Cruz C.A. circa 1988. Everyone just sat there like bumps on a log, because all the tofu eating hippies had no idea what they were seeing. It was definitely the loudest rock show I've ever seen. I had ringing in my ears for days afterward. In fact 30 yrs. on, as I wrote this post, I still have that ringing. Tinnitus, the gift that keeps on giving.
We were so young! I feel like I lived this a million times.
Only Sonic Youth could make a lyric like "Heidi Ho" seem so damn cool. Damn I miss the 90s.

"In the video, Stansbury wore a Nirvana T-shirt, five months before the release of that band's breakthrough album Nevermind." Also: "Following repeated recommendations by Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon, Nirvana signed to DGC Records in 1990."

One of the 5-10 best bands in American history.
Maybe top 20. Idk about top 5. In no order Beach Boys, Grateful Dead, The Byrds, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Ramones have to be the top 5 bands. Then Nirvana, Aerosmith, Neil Young and Crazy Horse, Metallica, Talking Heads gotta get in there. Sonic Youth is probably somewhere in the next 10. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Pearl Jam, GNR, REM, Allman Brothers all gotta get in that 10 also.

Thurston could be the audience's dad back then,he was born in 50s but look like a teen in the nineties.
i'm listening this at 1:00 am and I'm crying, I want to be there but I can't. Actually I even can't complain about "being in the wrong generation", nobody can. I am writing this from a mobile phone, while someone watch my stories on instagram, and maybe my stories were about amazon' merch. I can say what I want, but I'm still here, on Internet.
