  • Winter beekeeping ain't easy! You have worked all year keeping your bees alive, and now most of us have winter to deal with! Remember, honey bees are not native to America, and in some areas it is more difficult to keep them alive! If you are a good beekeeper, you left plenty of honey for your bees to overwinter, but making bee candy or sugar cakes, is a great backup plan to give your bees a little extra help in making it through the winter!

You can also put the cakes in oven super low. Like put your oven on lowest setting, then when it heats up, turn off the oven and put in the sugar pans and leave them in for an hour or so using the residual heat from the oven . Trick is to dehydrate but not carmelize the sugar.

Thank you Whistle. How about the water? You feed them with dry sugar and where they can get water? Almost nobody is explaining needs of water. It could be some moisture inside the hive.

In the winter they get plenty of water from honey and yes I’m sure some from condensation

Vinegar is added to yellow jacket traps to keep honey bees away. Do they consume your cakes with no issues?

Extremely small amount of vinegar, like one capful

You can ad citric acid or lemon water ,the idea is to put an acid in the sugar in order to make it a brick

@@RKalosit hardens rock solid with just sugar and water and setting in a warm room a couple days. Kaymon Reynolds adds just sugar and water too, nothing else at all.
