I just finished watching the series and had to look up reviews of this book. Everything you said about the book showed in the series. It started off very intriguing but by episode 6-8 it was a hott mess. The name kinder garten honestly made it feel like a joke. The series ending leaves you even more confused and hints of a season 2. The actors were great just a very poor storyline.
Really? Wow. I have heard such mixed things, too. Thanks for watching :)
One of the very rare cases of the show/ movie being better than the book. I literally can’t think of another example
Foundation
For me the book is usually better than the movie, although Dune was very good.
Exactly Because for most the book is always better than the movie
Two more examples: Jaws; The Godfather. Both better than the original written material. Just saying.
I BELIEVE THEY STARTED OFF WITH THE PARENT'S OF APOLLO SO THERE ARE NO QUESTIONS ABOUT THE REASONS WHY APOLLO IS THE WAY HE IS! AND WHY HE LOVED THE BOOK! IT IS DONE IN THE BEGINNING TO AVOID HAVING TO DO IT LATER! IMO
im watching the show and hate every single character, I came here to see if the show just botched the book but 4:04 you confirmed the daddy plot is a waste of time and it is as infuriating to read as it is to watch. I know youre trying to be fair but Idk who the audience is women? mom? african ppl? idk im all three and hate this plot so much LMAO maybe it was because a man wrote the book.
Oh wow haha. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Wish I watched this book review before investing into 8 episodes of the show… the show actually started good then went downhill, and fast, especially the last 3 episodes.
The show also included Apollos father, they attempted to make it as if he was a Changeling or some creature but he was just a bad husband, it didn’t really add to the story at all.
Yea, that's a bummer. Thanks for watching my review anyway :)
The show started off fine but at the climax is this cliff that drops to nothingness, I am so infuriated. I can't believe they decided to adopt this book as it is.
Oh wow! Thanks for telling me.
I can't tell if you mean that literally or metaphorically lol. Cuz I watched the show today and that's literally what happened, but I've never seen a show take SUCH a bad turn at the end like that! The entire show I was waiting for answers, but the last two episodes just felt like they were wasting my time rather than telling me a story.
I didn't hate the writing. I thought the author did what he did deliberately to create certain emotional effects. My problem was that I found the protagonist profoundly disagreeable. By the end of the book, I had stopped caring what happened to him and his murderous cabal of a family. In addition, the captivity scene, where Apollo is chained to a radiator and smacked in the head with a hammer, happened so abruptly that at first I didn't even know it was Apollo suffering such abuse. There was also the bit about fitting a cemetery headstone and a mattock into a suitcase that was described as "small". That felt rather contrived to me. The end, where he murders a guy, goes upstairs and calmly cleans up, then steals the guy's clothes, and then retrieves his wife (who earlier chained him to a radiator and smacked him in the head with a hammer), takes her back to the house, has sex with her in the dead guy's bed, steals more clothes, and then sets the house on fire before going into the basement to commit another murder, and then escaping through the troll tunnel completely turned me against Apollo. So the wife has one count of murder, one count of attempted murder, and one count of arson. Apollo has one count of murder, one count of accessory to commit murder, and one count of arson. With good guys like these, who needs trolls?
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. That scene you're describing rubbed me the wrong way as well.
I like the show so far🤷🏽♂️
Awesome!
You are not my mother on Netflix has an excellent, much better portrayal of changelings
I haven't heard of it. Thank you for the recommendation!
It should have ended with baby Bryan’s death
Ooof
Man those trees on the book cover are spooky ... D:
The worst book I ever read.
It’s one of mine too 😅
I don’t usually leave negative comments, but I honestly couldn’t disagree with you more. I worked in publishing for over ten years, I’ve written five novels and two feature length screenplays (not to brag, just that I have some insight here.)
I thought his prose was a deliberate choice, one I’ve seen both work and not previously. I thought it worked here. I disagree with most of what you said, but I do appreciate that you read it and went out of your way to discuss it here. Thank you for that.
I’m glad you liked it. There are books I love that people hate.
@@megansreadingrevelations As do we all, my love. That’s the beauty of reading. ❤️❤️❤️
@@megansreadingrevelations that’s being said, have you read “Lovecraft Country?” I know HBO did their show and I watched it, but much like you, I love audiobooks. I’m curious. I loved that book. You might not, but that’s okay too. Just curious.
By the sounds of it, The show is much better than the book 😂😂
I haven't tried the show yet, but the book definitely wasn't for me. Thanks for watching!
Easily 👍
The show turns into a hot mess
Never seen you that fired up before over a book 📕 love it and a five star video because I totally agree with you love your Aussie family friend John ❤❤❤
Haha it happens :)
I am watching the show and now I placed a hold for this book but I am rethinking it. All I hear is negative reviews about this book and a couple that say it's great. I read some spoilers and I am thinking the plot gets messy.
Give it a try! You can always put it down if you don't like it. Thanks for watching!
This doesn’t sound as great as the tv
It wasn't for me, unfortunately.
This book appears to be a tangled crazy unrelated mess! I’m watching the series right now and I’m seeing some of your truths as well in the series……..great review…thanks. And p.s….I hate it when books and films do not live up to their hype and media reviews! Boo!👎🙄
Thank you for watching. I’m undecided whether to watch the show. Do you think I should?
I haven’t read the book but so far the show is great! You should watch and do a comparison review
I'm in the process of reading The Changeling and I pretty much agree with what you've said. I have about 30 pages to go, so I guess I'll finish it. The TV show seemed really promising. I hope it veers from the novel significantly (certainly the structure of the show is different), but I'm not optimistic since LaValle is doing the narration for the series.
Thank you so much for watching. I'm excited to hear your final thoughts on the book.
I've been watching "The Changeling" on Apple TV, but it felt all over the place, so I thought maybe the book is better. Apparently not.
It definitely wasn't for me. Thanks for watching!
I just finished listening and I wish I could get my credit back from audible
Haha that made me laugh 😂
You can. At least in the past you can if you disliked a title enough you can call and they would credit you back. I don’t know if they still do but give it a try.
{His novel, The Changeling, will soon be airing on Apple TV+ starring LaKeith Stanfield.} Do you think we should watch the Movie? Apparently this author is well respected? But I'll follow your advice and skip it for now. I am still reading Dust.
I don’t like to discourage people from reading books. This one just didn’t work for me. I am sure the show will embellish quite a bit.
The TV series is great so far
dust is a great book
Very few things are resolved by the end. And not in an open for a sequel kind of way..
I subscribed..You're spot on...I noticed the new apple tv version is the same...every man is made to be a jerk...
Thank you for watching and for letting me know about the show. It sounds like I’ll pass on watching it :/
@@megansreadingrevelationsthis may be one of those rare times that the show Is better than the book
The show is rather well done. Slow burn a bit but fun if you like fantasy genre/mystery genre
The Apollo character in the show isn't a jerk at all. I didn't read the book. I never learned to read.
Hi, I was really impressed by the beauty of "Motion Detection," a thriller book that I stumbled upon on Amz. It's different from the usual, and I highly recommend it to you!
Thank you for the rec!
