Soulstorm was a game I desperately wanted to like, but what the team absolutely NAILED, was the cutscenes and its animations. The things I'd do for a feature-length oddworld movie in that CG style...
Yeah. Cause as a remake, it's a massive let down. It removes so many of the gamespeak mechanics and puzzles that it's kinda a shell of its former self gameplay wise. In this case, I agree. If they focus on story, writing and animations, they could make a masterpiece. Now, I love the Oddworld games. But this latest attempt was a massive let down. The tower defence sequences doesn't really feel right in this type of game
This actually blows my mind - I worked on Soulstorm as an Environment Artist, and I've been watching both you and Caddy for years and had no idea you both talked about Soulstorm together like this! Caddy is right, the team was tiny. The Environment Art was created by myself and my lead mostly, with some outsource dipping in to help towards the busier periods. The animations were done solo by Tom Bramall, who's an absolute beast - we both work together at a new company now. :) I do agree with you though, as an Oddworld fan it pained me to see the design direction it ended up taking in the end. I actually said it'd probs get a Metacritic score of ~65 and was told I was being pessimistic lmao I joined Soulstorm as my first art gig, so the imposter syndrome was absolutely killer - especially given the pressure I was under to create so much work in a few months, during the pandemic... So pretty much all alone. 😂 Caddy's words on acknowledging the team size really gave some perspective for me - I always told myself the things he mentioned, but it's awesome to hear it from a tuber that I respect. Thanks for doing this guys ❤
I got to say that I agree with what he said about not carrying for the reviews. I noticed sometime ago that I have a tendency to like "bad games", I play it, I enjoy it a lot and then later I see the reviews and other people saying that it sucks and that no one should like it. I do watch some reviews tho, because I think you should acknowledge to yourself the problems of the things you like, so you don't just blindly like it, but I still don't change my mind just because a review says I should or because someone else don't like what I like.
I think some games that are deemed bad are actually not that bad by themselves... they just play less greatly than some of the juggernauts of the same genre they're often compared to, and that makes them look worse by comparison.
I think the people who make glitch compilations of SoulStorm and say "oh this game is a rushed mess", remember that Caddy said he had a Slig walking through the air as the main glitch he remembered having. I can replicate that glitch, CONSISTENTLY, in the original Exoddus. To me, that says the "fans" really need to be less subjective. The original is flawed too, sometimes in ways almost mirrored by SoulStorm - it seems unfair to mock one but ONLY praise the other. I love SoulStorm and think it's the truest revisit to what Lorne wanted to do with this tale in the first place. We're talking a small team which took 4 years rather than being given only 9 months. And to me, that just further confirms Exoddus HD isn't happening, because why double hand the work to recreate a second version of a circumstantial game because fans don't like the changes? Exoddus is the way it is because of dev crunch, the time it came out, and a scope that didn't compliment the story they wanted to tell. And I completely agree with Caddy's perspective. 🎉 But also, it's not for everyone, that's also true. So to each their own, I personally love it - new favourite in fact, New n Tasty has been dethroned. 😊

People say he’s in denial or licking boots. I disagree. Like he said, he’s had a more broad perspective on it. He met the team, and understood some events that would’ve set the team back. Look I get it, Caddy's a diehard fan of this franchise (enough to get tattoos of it) and now he's friends with the developers and even participated in the production. Which is why it couldn't be more obvious how biased he comes off and how cowardly and defensive he's being here. "They're a small team with a grand vision" is not a valid excuse for much of anything. That kinda logic is what gets your team to suffer from crunch or going past a budget. It's not inspirational, it's unprofessional. The original Oddworld had 99 mudokens, nobody asked them to put near 1,400 mudokens to save in Soulstorm. They could've streamlined the experience, killed it with the level/puzzle design, and prolly kept all their main levels and environments and it would've been better for the team and the player. It's also really shitty to handwave all the bugs with "I personally didn't experience them" as if that changes the objective reality that numerous people DID deal with them and it made the experience frustrating; it's literally the #1 most consistent critique in almost every review. It's also kinda funny to see someone use the "they're still fixing it and updating the game cuz they care" excuse. Translation: They released a buggy, early access game and decided to fix it later. We've heard this same story from companies like EA, Ubisoft, Activision, etc. except we don't take their excuses there. Also, I found it really funny how Caddy got super confrontational with Alizee by asking her for examples of issues she had, and everytime she named one he quickly handwaved it then proceeded to go on a 4 minute rant about the concept of "people not liking something shouldn't change your view" when it wasn't what anyone was talking about. She barely got into her opinions of the game, and with the direction he took it she would look like a total ass even if she wanted to talk more. Him ending with "I just don't care" was also really ironic and hilarious. You just went on a 4 minute rant justifying your opinion of something cuz some people didn't like it. I think that screams that you do care. And what's with that "I don't find reviews useful or entertaining anymore cuz I like what I like" crap? I love Caddy, but he was probably WAY too close to this one to be totally objective. Soulstorm is a gorgeous game... and it's also janky af, ignoring glitches, the controls are just bad and unnatural, the gamespeak has been stripped away, puzzles are non-existent, it's just a platformer with a double jump that can't pick between being too responsive or not responsive enough.
Just finished Soulstorm. Didn't impress me that much. Monotonous grinding and colourless. They should have just remade Exoddus and make it like New'N'Tasty. Exoddus is 10 times superior to Soulstorm. It's strange he hasn't reviewed this game yet.
if you a long time fan of this series,, you'll gonna be disappointed, the only one reason i liked and enjoyed oddworld games is the music and the atmosphere,, and there's nothing like this in soulstorm, for me there's no connection at all.
BIZARRE statements at the end here from a guy with a review channel. Caddie, people watch reviews not so much to decide whether or not to buy a game, but to get new perspectives on it from other gamers. Aspects they like, aspects they don't like, part of the entertainment is that they're engaged in a person's perspective on something they mutually care about. There's an entertainment aspect to it too sometimes, but a bigger thing is it helps add to ongoing discussion surrounding a particular game or series. That's the nature of being in an online community, fandom, or just sharing what you like with someone else. Even if it's hard to agree with, if someone is being honest and backing up their points somehow, it gives me some insight in how other people see a game I like, and something I can shape how I describe a game to others. Ultimately how you feel is how you feel, but things don't exist in a bubble and the narrative surrounding stuff is what colors people's perceptions. How the fuck else do you start talking about the Crash 4 redux without acknowledging how Wrath of Cortex turned out? How do you talk about Crash 5, *at all*, if your pretend-attitude about reviews is "who cares"? A great review can really put into words and highlight what people finding endearing, or infuriating, about a game. And I'm pretty sure he actually does know this shit since that's what his whole fucking channel is built on. This dude's coping *hard* with how Soulstorm turned out, holy *shit*
"Caddy isn't making a review video on the game cus he's in denial about how bad the game is" No he's not doing a review of the game cus he stopped doing game reviews YEARS AGO. And he's stated partially why is cus what matters to him isn't the OBJECTIVE goodness of a game, but whether or not he enjoyed it, which VERY much lines up with what he says here, and he wants to make videos to just express his opinions and have fun without it being too serious. Stop making up conspiracy theories because a guy liked a video game you didn't. Jfc.
I think we're just not going to get a real soulstorm critique cause there's just too much bias here: it's difficult to talk about something that people worked on when you know them to the degree caddy does, on top of that having a voice acting role in it. He likely wants to keep having friendly relationship with the team, so he's going to see all their decisions in the best faith possible. I think Soulstorm looks cool and I see where they were going with it. In terms of world-building and storytelling it's fantastic but the gameplay changes has two problems working against it: 1) it's lacking a lot of the aspects from Exoddus that people would naturally expect in a remake or reimagining, so their omissions are being taken as a downgrade. No emotion puzzles, no blind mudokons, lacking some of the new enemy types, missing Bonewerkz, lacking music tracks, missing characters, controlling exploding farts. Are these aspects the most amazing things in gaming ever created? No, but they were what people experienced back in the day and the kind of things that would spark excitement in hearing about a remake, like the idea of possessing a glukkon and going through speaking puzzles. Deliberately not working them all in is, inherently, going to disappoint fans of the original. 2) The mechanics they did roll with aren't exactly groundbreaking either, with the whole item management and "crafting" system. It feels like that reduce the types of puzzles you have rather than increasing them since so much of it involves scavenging the environment so you can knock out some Sligs.
i dont think he cares. i didnt like it, they changed too much for me. the throwing water n all that was too much. i wasnt feeling the flow of the game at all and i hate that sligs wouldnt just straight up die
that's not a bad game, you need to think about it. It's not by just playing the first level that it's a bad game, you have no argument. Play the game, finish it and make a real critic
Well damn, imagine telling someone how they should feel about something they liked and others don't. You wanna know something? I like the Mario movie. Not talking about the new one, although that one is incredible too. Not talking about the very first anime one, which I also think is a fun time. I mean the Mario Bros 1993 one. It was weird as hell, but dammit, I liked it. It went all out with the weirdness and atmosphere, the action was fun, the setting was interesting, all that stuff. Like I've heard folks say, "it's a bad Mario movie, but it's a fun action movie", and that's the thing. To me, it's just a different take on the Mario series. A lot more people also enjoy the movie, and even some of its haters ended up growing a soft spot for it. What I'm trying to say is, while a game being bad or good is _mostly_ an objective fact and analysis of the game itself... whether people will still like it or not is purely subjective. There are great games some people don't like, and mediocre or even straight up bad games that some people genuinely like. It just how it do be.
Not to be That Guy but like If you cant comprehend the idea that other people like things you dont it's time to maybe go outside and talk to people in real life

Like I get it, he wants more Oddworld and the negative reception of the game puts it at risk, but there is no other way to interpret this as blind fanboyism.
I get Caddy's opinion just fine, but he doesn't need to be so standoffish about it.
He doesn't want to upset daddy Lorne
I only read the script of Don't Breathe and it was awful. Still haven't watched the actual thing :D
Ive never fallen asleep in a movie but this was damn close
Just finished Soulstorm. Didn't impress me that much. Monotonous grinding and colourless. They should have just remade Exoddus and make it like New'N'Tasty. Exoddus is 10 times superior to Soulstorm. It's strange he hasn't reviewed this game yet.
But he did...?
@@bonebag1961 When? There's nothing on his channel.

if you a long time fan of this series,, you'll gonna be disappointed, the only one reason i liked and enjoyed oddworld games is the music and the atmosphere,, and there's nothing like this in soulstorm, for me there's no connection at all.
My ranking of Oddworld:
1. Stranger’s Wrath A
2. Abe’s Odyssey/New N’ Tasty A-
3. Soulstorm B+
4. Abe’s Exodus B
5. Munch’s Odyssey C
Factually speaking Abe's Exoddus is better than Oddysee, but New N Tasty was a huge miss, and Soulstorm was just a tad worse than Oddysee.
"Caddy isn't making a review video on the game cus he's in denial about how bad the game is"
No he's not doing a review of the game cus he stopped doing game reviews YEARS AGO.
Jfc.
Delicious cope.

In terms of world-building and storytelling it's fantastic but the gameplay changes has two problems working against it:
1) it's lacking a lot of the aspects from Exoddus that people would naturally expect in a remake or reimagining, so their omissions are being taken as a downgrade.
Caddy stop lying to youself, it was a bad game. If it wasnt bad you would have made a review video on it already, you are in denial.
that's not a bad game, you need to think about it. It's not by just playing the first level that it's a bad game, you have no argument. Play the game, finish it and make a real critic
i loved it!
People have different opinions ya know
Not to be That Guy but like
If you cant comprehend the idea that other people like things you dont it's time to maybe go outside and talk to people in real life
