ah yes, the glorious stick. The absolute pinnacle of weapons technology for 50k years. Pointy stick, Bendy stick that shoots other smaller sticks, heavy stick, stick with rock. Stick was the very first tool/weapon we picked up, and it just became obsolete a few centuries ago. A real OG ❤
obsolete just means no longer the primary choice in warfare, not that it can't still be used lol. Pretty sure there was a british guy who got a confirmed kill with a longbow in WW2
A good example of what happens when an unstoppable force hits an immovable object. For those two things to exist in the same universe, the unstoppable force must be able to pass right through the thing... so it does just that. And woe betide any movable or breakable object which should chance to lie behind.
My friend, thank you for trying my suggestion with the watermelon. Maybe lots of others liked that idea as well, but so cool. I actually feel bad for the wooden shield. He's earned his retirement and deserves a nice sendoff episode.
You are most welcome, my friend. I think that’ll be a fun idea to end an episode. That way kind of show where he’s gonna hang on the wall. That thing’s been around for like two years. It’s a staple of the channel.
Holy shit! SirGains can read!?! I hadn't heard of the kanabo before this video, but I can see why it would be a weapon to be feared! That would be incredibly unpleasant to ge on the receiving end of. I'm not surprised those pig bines shattered, but that partially from the kanabo and partially cause they looked cooked, which will weaken them and make the comparatively brittle. That being said, I've no doubt that weapon could easily break bones with or without armor. Very cool weapon and video. Keep up the awesome work!
Hahaha yes he can read Reddit posts at least 😂 yeah it’s truly devastating. How well it can be used I am not sure. It has a long reach for sure and can be choked up and such but it’s still relatively slowe
I trained a bit in kanabo years ago. Underrated weapon all around. The middleweight type at 6-8 lbs are absolutely devastating in combat. Yep, they do require development of a certain type of strength to use effectively, but no more than you need to chop wood, or do light physical labor. If you combine that low barrier to entry with a weapon that is widely available, easy to make and replace, and efficient against "higher" weapons forms, you've got a winner. Not mysterious, not fancy, not flashy, but it gets the job done and keeps it done.
More importantly, in fedual Japan the ownership of swords was forbidden except by the Samurai. Along with the bo staff, something like this could have been available to your common Japanese peasant.
Excellent point, I've seen a lot of size variation in historical photos, but without context was unsure of the weight or exact dimensions. Now I'm wondering if my initial plan to make one with a wheelbarrow handle is actually feasible... It certainly doesn't HAVE to weigh 12 pounds. (Or cost $200, for that matter.)
That's mega! There's a guy called Houston Jones who does tests on weapons, on himself. He tested a canabo on his own leg! It's worth a watch to show how little force would be required to take a leg out! Cheers for a great informative video!

Loving your new outfit. Honestly I doubt someone would be crazy enough to bring such heavy and unwieldy weapon to battle. Probably it was used to bash the enemy unconscious and capture him
My guess is that it would be wielded by a relatively small number of highly specialized and very heavily armored “shock troops” that would be held in reserve from the main fighting until there’s an opportunity to deploy them to a specific spot in the enemy line where they can smash their way through and present an opening for the rest of the army, probably equipped primarily with yari (spears) to charge through. This is often how troops with Zwiehanders were used by European armies.

@@Hanashibi Yeah, and if something deforms a solid plate, guess what it does to whoever is behind soft armor. Conclusion: swingy Bonk stick should be avoided at all costs.
Japanese armor is quite rigid. The lamellar boards are very stiff and hardly flex, they have to be lacquer hardened before being laced so they are quite rigid. It can telescope in one direction, but it s quite stiff when the armor is closed around the body. Later in the 16th century they also had rigid cuirasses, made of plate as well. Big weapon for big damage. Thank you for the smashing. Hulk gives 9 out of 10. Then i just had an amazing image of Japanese style hulk welding one. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thanks for this impressive video! I think it could shatter the bones of the shield-bearing arm. About the bone tests, I'd say that when you hit an arm, it usually gets moved away; it wouldn't get pinned between the blow and a block of wood. A katana would move away too, also because the defendant would try to position it to let the blow slip away along the blade (we do that with bokkens). Legs are different, if one is firmly positioned with the foot on the ground and the body weight on it there is far less movement to reduce the energy transfer. also easier to hit with a relatively slow and heavy weapon (maybe with a longer handle for better range, going for a knee-high sweep). About the head... I bet concussion + trauma on the neck would make the helmet far less efficient than against a sword.
@dashrendar5320 I'm contemplating and planning at the moment. It will be difficult as I have to do it by hand as I don't have a full shop with a wide array of power tools, but then again, neither did the Japanese 🤷♂️ Even when the project is complete, showing it would be difficult as I do not have a social media platform or anything like that. I got a Viking Wood Splitter (sword) last year and was thinking how much it reminds me of a legendary weapon from a video game. It weighs 12 lbs, more than a claymore or zweihander. Unrealistic for combat…for mortals. I’d like to see a video testing the smashing capabilities of it like you did with the kanobo. They weigh the same!
It definitely could shatter a Katana. It was designed to break swords, crush Armor and bust bones. On the show Deadliest Warrior, it broke a Viking Shield and dented a Spartan Shield. Granted, the damage it did to the Spartan Shield wasn't severe, but there were slight dents and struck with 400+ PSI. In Japanese folklore, Kanabo were used by Ogres and Demons called Oni. 2-12 lbs and 2-4 feet of solid oak with iron studs is NO joke.
This is a fantasic format and really entertaining! IMO, would you rather risk ruining your family sword in the heat of combat, or swing around easily replaceable smash stick?
that's what i've always admired about blunt force trauma... it doesn't care if you have armor or not, armor is only good for bladed weapons and depending on the armor "light" caliber arrows/bullets. you do not want to get hit with ANY kind of war hammer/club in any kind of armor under any conditions!
The sword was pretty worthless after that club hit! You really don't think much about bent swords in video games and fantasy books, but it must have happened to thousands of warriors in history.
Dash the only problem I see is that if you set anything on something hard..especially a stump..is that of course it will smash or break from being trapped between two objects like those. Another is to test things on a dummy that flexes as much as a human body would to see what weapons would truly do
Yeah you are 100% correct. I was working to try and set up a better backdrop for future testing and need to set up a better rig for a More analogous human template.
No wonder the Japanese grew to love baseball so much, the kanabo is effectively an armored baseball bat. I'd imagine the technique and method of use would carry over
I am curious as the whether or not, with a smaller handle, it would be beneficial to slide your top hand down towards the end of your swing. Would the minor boost in power be worth the tradeoff of less control on the rebound?
10:30 This is one of my favorite stick weapons. I feel compelled to mention that modern reproduction swords are made from MUCH stronger spring steel than the old, bendy garbage they were working with in the past. There's a reason they had to "fold it a thousand times," because the steel was, I'll be nice, ALL kinds of substandard. To be sure, it is an absolute art, and masterwork, to create such an object as a katana with the materials they had, and lifetimes to refine the practice, plus the differential hardening techniques that they probably pioneered, but my bet is that a kanabo would, if not shatter, absolutely pretzel any katana that was its historical contemporary. Modern materials may not be as "mythical" but I'm more interested in the raw data. And, no matter how many people are in their feelings that I somehow disparaged the sanctity of the magical katana of old, the raw data shows that the stick still dominates. Like Musashi using an oar... even a quarterstaff made of the right wood, could effectively stop a sword, it doesn't have to "break" it. But there is another weapon called "Chinese sword breaker" made of steel that you should check out. It's called a jian, but because of tonal inflection, I think that same word may describe like 6 different things, "Chinese sword breaker" will get you close. Good stuff.
Fun fact: In ancient japan, kanabo was considered the weapon of choice of the Oni (demon).. probably the indigenous islanders of them different islands that make up japan...

Unrealistic for combat…for mortals. I’d like to see a video testing the smashing capabilities of it like you did with the kanobo. They weigh the same!
Oh man, where did you get it? I would love to check it out that sounds epic.
Is that bone cooked? Because cooked bone is more brittle than uncooked so it may not be a great indicator of what a bone can take.
So glad you enjoyed it my friend! It was tons of fun
Ha sadly yes. The butcher shop was all out of bones for me so I had to improvise but yes it is more brittle
@dashrendar5320 I mean we do get the point though that it would definitely break bones. 😆 Imagine a whole unit of troops wielding these things...
You cannot beat the simplicity and effectiveness of the big stick
You really can’t. Goes back to most of all human history
that's what i've always admired about blunt force trauma... it doesn't care if you have armor or not, armor is only good for bladed weapons and depending on the armor "light" caliber arrows/bullets. you do not want to get hit with ANY kind of war hammer/club in any kind of armor under any conditions!
Dash contemplating on whether if this was carried into battle. 😂 Its a bonk stick. Of course it got carried into battle.
Bonk sticks are the best sticks
So it's called a kanabo.
All this time, I just call that oni cudgel.
Hahahaah not wrong technically
Never underestimate the power of a big stick.
Wise words
I like how you do the slow mo because we can see you you use the chain of your body
I’m pretty sure you are both right. I’m pretty sure Kanobo translates into English as “smashy stick.” 🤣
Haha that checks out I think
Interesting footwork.
Smash Sword-Bendar
It a bad name for it “sword bendar” I like it
The sword was pretty worthless after that club hit!
You really don't think much about bent swords in video games and fantasy books, but it must have happened to thousands of warriors in history.
Yeah I can only imagine how it would feel to have that thing bend in your hand
Well one thing is for sure, it ain’t going back in the scabbard 🤣
Hahahaha true true
Dash the only problem I see is that if you set anything on something hard..especially a stump..is that of course it will smash or break from being trapped between two objects like those.
Another is to test things on a dummy that flexes as much as a human body would to see what weapons would truly do
Yeah you are 100% correct. I was working to try and set up a better backdrop for future testing and need to set up a better rig for a
More analogous human template.
@dashrendar5320 I meant to also say...I'm not criticizing! I made a human dummy once for archery and it was not easy
going clubbing the old school way
The only way I club 😂
Shugoki Smash!!!💥 Sir Gains SMASH!!! You only need to put on about 300 more lbs to truly crush!!!
Haha I know I know, need that extra SMASH weight
@ 😂
Awesome!
The Kanabo is peak melee weapon, second only to pole arms and pole axes.
No wonder the Japanese grew to love baseball so much, the kanabo is effectively an armored baseball bat. I'd imagine the technique and method of use would carry over
Run He has a stick with a nail in it ... IE the Kanabo + Must roll plus 10 to strength to use.
Haha with +10 blunt damage….no piercing damage though
Dash...smash!
SMASH
I am curious as the whether or not, with a smaller handle, it would be beneficial to slide your top hand down towards the end of your swing. Would the minor boost in power be worth the tradeoff of less control on the rebound?
Buford Pusser based on personal experience highly recommends "smash stick"
Just wait till this guy learns about the sharp stick…😮
Wait what?? You can make sticks sharp??!?!!
Sword needs put on spring to simulate it being swung as well as weapon being swung at it to be a more accurate test.
Oh, that would be a really cool way to set it up
id be curious to see this test redone with someone else swinging the sword at the same time
Yeah I need @fitfromhome for that haha. I waned to see because I think it would make a big difference
Hida Kisada approves.
The mighty stick!
All hail the mighty stick!
