  • A scene from the curious film The Girl Who Couldn't Quite from 1950, about a girl (Elizabeth Henson) who has never smiled until one day she sees a tramp (Bill Owen) whose funny ways and manners make her laugh and her family decide to persuade him to stay on to help their daughter. However, Owen's tramp Tim is rather more forthright in his manners than her family and appalled by her rudeness, so in this scene he decides to teach her some "etiquette." Needless to say, she doesn't like it one bit! You could say this is an early precursor to Owen's Compo from his TV series Last of the Summer Wine, but he is superb in the film.

Who knew Compo was so handsome in his youth?! I love this film, thank you, for posting this wee video.

You're welcome. And yes, Bill Owen really was quite striking in his younger days with his own inimitable style of acting. He never lost his working class accent even when starting out, which is why I think the public took to him so much.

@@screenclips9105 indeed, inimitable. No-one before or since, has been anything like him. I agree, fame didn't change him for the worse, I feel that he only managed to be more down-to-earth when he was buried! He proved something important, that no matter where you're from, whatever your background, you can aim for the stars & surpass the estimations & expectations of others, especially of the naysayers. The era that he existed in can & will live on, for as long as we're bringing the memory, to anyone who'll listen! A much simpler time, harder, without all mod-cons, but a more peaceful & calm a time, to really live in, than the time now, within which we are all just trying to survive. Oh, to be a kid again...

@@cosmicstargazer10 Oh, I so agree. Less complicated times and despite the hardships at times we had the ability to laugh at things. At least we have the films & TV shows to say what it used to be like and to look back upon. 😊

Fellow gives off quite the Fred Estaire vibe. And if life were only so simple.

Today, he would be behind bars. This is truly babaric. Makes you wonder if Compo would've done that to Nora Batty.

Given half the chance he would! The only reason he's spanking the girl in this is to teach her a lesson and treat people better than she does and not be so spoilt. As for ending up in prison, he wouldn't mind as he's a tramp - he'd have a roof over his head, which is another reason for why he does what he does here. To teach the girl to appreciate what she's got, as others have it far worse.

Back then it was teaching a spoilt madam a lesson in manners. Ironically this would only be legal now if they paid for the privilege in a "niche" establishment.
