you can't leave this empty - What are Joni’s own words? And, whoops, but there are some great, just less historically well-known female folk singer-songwriters from other countries who came before Joni Mitchell. Joni is, undoubtedly, an icon and a longtime favorite of mine, but the position of “godmother to all female singer songwriters” doesn’t necessarily belong to her, just because she was an extraordinary talent, skilled, had an amazing voice, and was commercially successful. To name a few: Elizabeth Cotten (a Black woman folk singer songwriter, around long before JM ); Violeta Parra (Chilean folk artist, singer-songwriter who started out in 1939). I think Judy Collins was active before Joni came along, and she’s easily a godmother, too. If you haven’t heard the song “Gracias a la vida,” by Violeta Parra, please find it and listen, asap. (It was also covered/recorded by Mercedes Sosa and Joan Baez.) Just because White North Americans may not know about these women, doesn’t mean they weren’t laying the groundwork for future female folk singer songwriters to come.
ToeJ - Laura Marling is clearly influenced by Joni Mitchell, and that’s a compliment to Joni, but Marling does her own thing. She has many original songs that very much showcase her own sound, and, likely, as Joni Mitchell’s music and sound evolved over time, reaching into other genres, so will Laura Marling’s. Her voice and musicianship are strong, she can do edgy and sweet, and will most likely have a long career ahead of her. It’s fantastic to have a new generation of folk and folk-influenced musicians, and I welcome artists like Marling and Johnny Flynn. Not sure why you feel the need to take her down a notch with your multiple “rip-off” comments under this video.
Me partner has always had a thing, we’ve been together ten years so far, and if he hears a song he thinks I’ll like he texts me it. He sent me her name, and this is the first video what came up. I don’t even know if this is the song he heard yet as he’s not home, but I love it, and him, already xx
It's a great thing to have a grasp of what life is about at such a young age but then also to have the artistic ability to present it to the public in such a wonderful way - I must admit I'm in awe of such talent!
It is superb. This is my introduction to her and I love it (I am a life long Joni Mitchell fan) Sadly, I am also an irritating pedant and I don't think you can call one song a "body of work". In fact, I know you can't, unless it's the only song she ever wrote. Body of work Noun body of work (plural bodies of work) The entirety of the creative or academic output produced by a particular individual or unit.
@@andrewjones2132 No it can't. The phrase 'body of work' has a specific definition. It means the entire collection of an artist's creative output. 'The Complete Works of Shakespeare' is a body of work. Hamlet or Macbeth are not.
@@andrewjones2132 Before you get bogged down trying to defend your mistake, why not google a few dictionary sites first. It might save you a tedious exchange of comments.
I saw her a few years ago in Sheffield. At one point she said “you’re a very polite audience” to which someone in the audience immediately replied “sorry” :).
I really can't get enough of Laura's music at the moment. Every online performance she's done of the new album, I've watched, and I don't usually do that. Excited to see her live gig on 6th June!
@ELosieMwahaha - were you able to go to a live gig in June ... of anyone? If so, pretty envious, both of being able to see Laura Marling, and being able to hear live music! There have been some outdoor gigs in my small city, but most live music shows have been cancelled due to the pandemic.
Oh Laura, you never fail to unfurl something inside my very soul that waits to hear your voice. Thank you for the music. One day I hope to see you live. Arohanui from NZ
The phrasing and melody in parts are something closer to a fucking gilbert and sullivan track... and to make something like that fresh and 100% genuine and current is a credit to someone who has mastered a craft.
This voice is a miracle. And as wrote Arthur Rimbaud : A black, E white, I red, U green, O blue : vowells, each note that Laura sings could be associate with a hot colour : A :blond, E shining
Came on this video expecting to hate it, surprised at how good it is, them chord progressions are absolutely incredible, reminds me of a female nick drake.
The fact that I find her derivative and boring is nothing to do with it. She suffers from the problem like most singer-songwriters, both male and female - she ain't no Joni Mitchell. But quite pleasant.
These freaking chords and picking patterns. What a stunningly well-crafted song. Mind. Blown. Standing ovation.
I really need to learn to finger pick...not easy to do with the voice and veses and all the rest - strumming is so much easier...:D
ToeJ - Joni did what first? The chords and picking patterns? I’m sure Joni picked them up from other artists who came before, as well.
@@gedison5551 They're Joni's own words. She is the godmother to all female singer songwriters.

this live sounds like her studio version omg she is literally a queen!
This is one of the best things I've ever seen.
Saw her in Australia some years ago. She is a poet with a voice like a beating heart.
Switched on Jools on a whim haven't been moved like this since I first heard Joni Mitchell 50 odd years ago
I thought the same!
I am a right hard bastard to please ... and I thought that it was stunning.
Yes i thought of Joni as well. Seamless performance.
Just an incredible song and performance, the picking is a steady as a rock, the chords ebb and flow.

This song cuts so deeply. We are so lucky to have a talent like Laura’s in our era. What a wonder.
1st time discovering this lady and what a talent she is. I am listening to every word and being carried along in her world. Just beautiful!
go watch on body and soul. trust me, you'll no regret it.

Everything about this was beautiful, especially her upper register and lovely vibrato. Well done you.
If Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell had a love child.........beautiful and emotional
I do not have enough words to state how beautiful this performance is!!
She writes perfect songs
oh how you have grown, from strength to strength - ever melodic, always beautiful Laura
This and The End of the Affairs play simultaneously..So perfect! ❤️❤️
Beautiful 😍
how does it sound EXACTLY the same as on the album??? song for our daughter is the first body of work i've heard from her and holy shit she's amazing!

Open, elegant & beautiful. Thank you, Laura Marling, for your art.

G Edison ah! If only it was a live gig, in the flesh, I meant the one she did on UA-cam live, streamed from union chapel.
Guru Dude Oooh good question, maybe the end of the affair? Made me cry the first time I heard it. How about you?
Heavenly
Fantastic track and exceptional recording. I could listen to Laura all day and sometimes do. ❤️

I've loved this song since I first heard it on Jools. Just a great voice and guitar, that's all that is needed.
I have always loved Laura Marling. I like her even more now.
Just listened to the Adam Buxton podcast and she played this. Gave me goosebumps.
Great song and beautiful voice !
Do you know how good this. Just astonishing.
Just listened to Adam Buxton's podcast episode with her and she sang this beautiful song. Had to come and check it out.
Lovely performance. Very nice guitar work.

Thanks Adam Buxton, rediscovering Laura as a result

Joni Mitchel vibes

Maybe just me?
Sounds like the first three chords have the same scale degrees, but it's pretty common to climb up like that and the chords are completely different
@@owenhu9465 yeah the chords are same increments but the melody is what makes it noticeable in my opinion. Still I like the song
if womanhood had a sound would be this
Yes yes yes
Didn't know Fearn Cotton played guitar 😁 seriously though this is great
She sounds like a very young Jewel Kilcher. Her voice is better in her higher register

Shame on them
Laura sounds like Karen Carpenter
"Working class hero" John Lennon
