Thank you for this video, honestly was super helpful to see what is unique about the English and how to play them as a beginner! I'm completely new to RTS games and I recently bought aoe4 to play with my bf (who was obsessed with original aoe). At first the idea of RTS was boring to me but I tried a few games and... now i'm hooked... I still suck but i'm trying my best to learn and improve each time. There are so many other civs to learn about and it's kind of overwhelming at first but I try to stick with the English first to get the hang of it.
Loved it. The top-level approach It complements really well the build order guides, since it's pretty easy to feel lost after you finish the 'core' of the build.
I started with French, played and lost a bit with HRE and now going to English. The early farms and not to have go across the map for food in castle age looks appealing. Thx for your guides!
Recently got into the game and gravitated to English, so this is a God-send, made quite a few things click on their general gameplan. Will be checking out the rest of civs you put out a video for, but right now I'm too hokked on the English XD
Just a note, the English farms don't need to be in the mill influence for enclosures to affect them. All English farms produce gold once the upgrade is researched
And another note: You can have between 8-12 farms in the influence of a mill. If you either use the 10 variant (or the 12 variant), you can build the mills/farms side by side and have enough space for 1(2) towers in between, pretty need in the late game when you have like 4-5 fully used mills and someone raids you.
@20:52 For anyone interested, it's a general rule for units, that they are at the same lvl as the age you get access to them. For example if you get knights/lancers in feudal/age2, you need to upgrade them, when you are in castle/age3, but if you only get access to them in castle/age3, they are already at the lvl of an castle/age3 knights/lancers. To be more concrete in this example, Rus and French have to upgrade their knights when hitting castle/age3, while other civs don't have to, because the others can only produce knights/lancers only after hitting castle/age3.
Really enjoyed the video. Learned what made English Men at Arms special along with the navy unique unit and tech. Looking forward to other civs I’m trying to learn like Rus and Mongol
Thanks Beasty. I only play English--for now. I am not satisfied I mastered it. My castle game is bad and I think I know why. Look forward to the other civs, my opponents. I have nothing to add, I think you got it all.
Thank you Beasty, love this guide. Very helpful, I definitely learned many new things. Would be awesome to see another in-depth one for the French as well :)
13:05 - not sure if this is fixed, but age of noob did a video about enclosures and it works no matter where the farm is, you just need to assign a villager to work on the farm
I do a feudal push on ladder and it works even though it is mad I send 1 villager to chop a straggler tree and 5 and the scout across the map. New villagers go on sheep. The scout finds their gold and the villages build a racks out of sight begins a wood corner. Usually near stone. Pump villager then maa. Until you have 4 maa. After the racks I put the 5 wandering villagers at the proxy on wood. back at home tc the straggler tree will have 50 wood by now he goes mill and house then sheep then farms. All new villagers got to farms now. Once u have 4 maa attack gold. Build tower. Then scout the second gold and tower it. Use the maa to molest the gold. And use towers to make them archers too Basically you go Abbey of Kings at the proxy and go to stone on the proxy. Build archery at proxy and now whe u have 300 ish stone attack and (always retreat to abbey, never let anyone die) and mass push the tc. Build a stone wall over their tc and build the stone tower. Usually they quit then
I don't understand that people say it is easy. English is a difficult civ. Staying 1 tile away with your long bows while attacking their gold villagers, or woodline at 5min mark, timing the spearman to come in perfectly. Turing it into a ram push before they get knights etc And retreating the push properly while forward vills building towers, and all the while macroing the farms, means basically you need fingers like an ocotopus
Easy to learn, hard to master. It's a bit like French in that regard. It's easy enough to run over gold players with Royal Knights, get a huge advantage, and win games. It's quite difficult to manage 4 separate knights individually, applying pressure without losing any, and proactively controlling the opponent's expansions. English is the same. At high level, they require a lot of micro to be effective. At low level, you can just a-move longbows, or turtle to imp
Good video Beasty. Should consider recording without audio next time and playing it over the top afterwards. The editing cuts make the background music sound a bit jarring.
This is a nice guide, not only a build order but an overhall of the civ. Also about the extra farms around mill, you can do 12 if you space it one out, but the question is: would it be efficient?
Just a heads up: You can say this video showed the English civ “over all” meaning it summarized everything. “Overhaul” is when you completely change everything. You can remember the difference because “hauling” is working hard to carry a heavy load, so an “overhaul” is when you work hard to completely change a thing over.

Interesting fact is that the English man-at-arms is not actually the most tanky man-at-arms. It's actually the Abbasids man-at-arms with camel support that gives them the same armor boost as armor clad and an additional 15% hp from bootcamp. Also interesting is that the Abbasid food farming gather rate is also stronger than English since they get 35% gather rate (golden age + agriculture) instead of 30% and an extra 8% drop off (improved processing). English probably still best though due to enclosures.
English bonus farm + agriculture i guess it's like 45%, the camel support is another unit, its like english mma is more tankier with 20 monks behind heal him
@@jaghal95 Am kind of confused, English don't get access to agriculture it is a unique economic wing tech (not to be confused with the tier 1 farm tech horticulture). As for camel support, that's true but camel archers is definitely not a support unit. You always want them in your composition in Imperial even without considering this tech, unlike monks which are only situationally useful. So in truth it behaves just like a permanent +2 / +2 armour to all infantry than anything else, or at least that's the way I see it.
