I grew up on Guam starting in the mid 60's I remember flying to Saipan on Air Micronesia in the 727's once you landed on the old Japanase air field you would be taxing back to the terminal with nothing but jungle on either side of the plane. The "terminal" back then was an old quonset hut. The only hotel on the island was the Royal Taga hotel. I used to play on a word war II tank that was in the water in front of the beach.
My late father a Navy Pharmacist Mate, landed at red beach with the 2MarDiv, losing two landing craft of five with Medical supplies, surviving the first banzi charge, receiving a commission and helping to oversee the many compounds of Camp Susupe. He returned home in 1946. Retiring with 30 years in 1960. Would only mention Saipan when very inebriated and then I couldn't understand. Narragansett Bay

We lived on Saipan in the 50s. I was 2-6.
