I just snagged one of these from Costco on sale for $1099. I really like it so far! Been wanting a gaming laptop that doesn’t scream gaming laptop with excessive rgb and logos all over the dang thing. It can be a professional laptop and a play laptop! I dig it. And it’s not a fingerprint magnet like other laptops I’ve had with darker finishes.
Thank you for the review! I was between this and the 5i Pro, finally decided for this in the i9 version. The only real difference for me (besides the color that I asume in this is more "office friendly") was the screen: 500nits P3 in the Pro and 350nits sRGB in the i5. I work on grading on an external 4K BenQ screen, so it didn´t make those 200 USD diference. Bought an additional 2TB SSD with that money!

Thanks for such a good video. Can you explain further what advantages this has over the pro model (with same specs). I’m concerned about all the reviews saying it’s ver loud and hot. What if used for light video editing, can the settings be changed so that it runs not too hot or loud? Or would getting an i5 13th gen procceser help make it not so loud an hot? Also, there’s a 500nit screen version refurbished from levonovo for a great deal right now. Is there any negative points of having the 500 nit screen? I have in general sensitive eyes. Can the 500 screen still be easily dimmed down for most uses to the level of a 350 screen when wanted?
If you are trying to get away from heat and noise, you want to go to an AMD model. For example the five slim AMD will run very cool, and have better battery life
Thanks bro for replying to my comments 🙏. The only amd Lenovos I’m finding here are the ideapad which I’m concerned might run hotter/louder than the legion since they’re kind of lower tier maybe or not designed for video editing as much as the legion ? Are you concerned with the 14th gen intel chips? I’ve been running into alot of talk on that online

This would probably be slightly (like 2-5% better) in performance while the Ryzen HS shines in power efficiency. You can get around 8+ hours of battery life from the Ryzen on basic tasks, you definitely won't get anywhere near as much on this Intel one even on the most basic of tasks.
What I love about this device is the generous cooling with the big fans. I love that they did not make the chassis thinner. It is neither too thick nor too thin. What prevents me from buying is the terrible fan control . Custom Mode does not let you lower the fan speed under load. You can only increase it and make it even louder than it already is. In Performance Mode the fans get much too loud although the gpu temperature is over 12°C below nvidia thermal limit of 87°C. In Balanced they limit the gpu to 80 watts although the temperature is even 20°C under the limit! I don't understand why they throttle the gpu regardless of its temperature. The fans could be quieter AND the performance better. Sadly we cannot fix this, because Custom Mode does not allow to lower the fan speed. Sadly, it also does not work with community projects like legion fan control which enabled full fan control.
@@egsy2220 In Performance Mode, you get the full TDP, but also very loud fans. If you are fine with being forced to wear headphones, you are good to go. On Balanced Mode, Lenovo caps the graphics card to 80 watts.
I have the same model but don't feel such heat, only warmth but once running chrome which opens 20 processes at once.... I believe lowering the refresh rate when you don't want it high plus quiet mode works to reduce cpu work....

If your 5 does the same thing, I'll chalk it up to a bug in vantage, if not, i might have to rma.

@@TechGuyBeau You showed in the video all the in-game graphic settings you had set on Horizon but not on BG3. I was asking for those settings so I could compare how my 2023 Legion Pro with rtx 4070 and i7-13700HX was performing against this laptop. I asked for those settings because most reviewers only do graphic tests using first person shooters which I don’t play. BG3 is one of the games I do own. Got this a few days ago, came as a surprise to me how high the temps could get, even at idle. Understandable that its a gaming laptop and all, i just worry for its longevity with HX chips inside. Though so far, ive been enjoying it, maybe the minmal ports is a nitpick. I know when my phone reached 40°c its unbearable, im impressed by it from cooling 103°c to stable 80-90°c in a few seconds, wish the fan was controllable stock tho...
@@حيدرسامي-ج yep, figured that out eventually, though then i worry about the fans lifespan, is that a thing to worry on gaming laptops? Im a first time owner
@@cupcakeobsession im too but some freinds said to me that fans are cheaper that a new laptop so yea but dont run it max all time just set a curve and 75-85 c is normal
@@حيدرسامي-ج i mean, lenovos adp is kinda king where i am, so i guess im not to worried. I dont have many games to play as well, mostly casual and besides that i run mid settings or low when on battery to not degrade it too fast. Im just shocked that idle temps arent below 35 and reaching 50, underload seems pretty stable plugged at somewhat maxed on hsr and mid to high on wuwa both at 70-80c (wuwa reaching 90 sometimes).
Hi man, would you recommend the Pro 5 gen 8 (7745HX + 4070) or the Slim 5 gen 9 (8845HS + 4060)? Both of them have the same panel, the 500 nits 1600p one. In terms of temps, idling fans, battery life? They're at the same price and the 4070 looks like a no brainer but i hear some complains of throttling and poor battery life compared to the Slim, is it true? What do you say?
What’s your take on the issue with intel 14th gen? And do you think it’s safe to get a factory refurbished legion that has 3 year in house warranty? I’m concerned with all the talk online about the 14th gens self destructing.
from my online research, people said that the issue with the newest intel cpu is only appear in desktop cpu. which mean mobile cpu is safe from the tdp problem
It would be good to know how performance varies between being powered by battery and plugged in. There used to be a big difference between AMD and Intel in this regard, not sure if there still is. This vs the 5 Slim with its AMD processor would be a useful comparison, and even the 5 Pro as well. (My Legion 7 gen 6 AMD performs way worse on battery, while Alienware x14 Intel maintains performance well at the expense of battery life).
@@TheKineticworxyeah I believe, playing while plugged in helps achieving maximum performance and is considered better unless you lower the graphics and keep vram usage at a low ig you can run fine in battery mode but it won't last for long hours for sure....
Hey does performance settings temp limit tool really help? I mean if we limit cpu temps and gpu temps to say 80, then will it really limit it to those temps or with time it will go to 100…the only reason why I don’t buy gaming lappy is there thermals…I don’t know proper undervolting, but as I see the lappy has some kind of temp controller settings so I was wondering
@HotshotArafath didn't try for video editing. About cooling tho I had a friend looking at the hwmonitor while I played space marine 2 on high/ultra at 2k dlss balanced/quality. Fps tended to be 60+, but sometimes, when there were lots of enemies, it came around 54ish. Framegen would have helped. I used the OC mode. The temp for gpu seemed to be below 80 all the time. But the cpu was hot when the game started, even reaching 100C thermal throttled and went below. While gaming, it stayed around 70-90, mainly the P cores get around 100. Even playing normal games like Lol, asseto corsa the cpu will get 100c and then come down to 70-80. Played ck3 on silent mode didn't seem to reach the 100s. I would say it's the issue with the 13/14gen series with the P and E core setup. Windows process scheduling can not fully utilize the E cores and puts all power on P cores. This will get better in future once amd brings the same setup in future ryzen. Might need to undervolt the cpu.
@@samiurkhan4362I bought the same spec as your’s. But now I am afraid as I heard that i9 13th/14th gen are faulty. Do you have any issue with your laptop so far like crashing?
@MrGamer004 cpus don't die theoretically. I have 1st gen i3 that I bought on 2010 and it's still working. The thing is that high temp may reduce the life span or performance of the die. 13gen had 105C as max running temp don't know about 14gen. To your question no I didn't face anything yet. The best thing to keep your cou cool would be to undervolt it and lower the wattage using throttlestop or similar apps. The problem with the 13 14gen i9 is that it automatically boosts to 6mghz in an instant. You don't need more than 4.5mghz for most games. But mine stays around 5.3-6mghz. Need to underclock it.
Hi I'm thinking to get the lenovo legion 5i i7-13650HX because it's the cheaper one will it be cooler then this one? or should I go for the slim 5 RTX 4060 - R7 7435HS or with RTX 4070 - R7 8845HS but that's the most expensive one. I'm a casual gamer I mostly care about getting the one who get the least hot and will run guild wars 2 decent :3

These need better fan control. I don't mind a hotter laptop in exchange for less noise. My 4800H that's supported by LegionFanControl is inaudible unless I'm gaming or using handbrake. And even then I can barely hear the fans.

The 7i though has all metal build even on the keyboard deck? Can you tell me that feels good huh? Although the 7i doesn't use an rgb light strip at the front like the 7i Pro. If i could find the 2022 Legion 7i Pro i with the 3080 Ti, i would get that instead...
Hi! 👋 Can you fix the thumbnail because it is missing the copilot key? 👏👀
Just came across your channel. Really helpful, clear and concise reviews. Keep up the good work. Also, what would you suggest between this and the slim 5 model?
Price difference? I prefer AMD CPUs due to better thermals and battery life. But it’s going to come down to price and specs
@@TechGuyBeau Specs are identical - 4060, 16gb ram, 1tb ssd, 240hz screen. There is just a 10 USD price difference between the two. I would prefer one with the better thermals comparative to performance.
You forgot to say what graphic settings you had in Baldurs Gate 3. I would like to compare your results on this laptop to my 5i Legion Pro. Thanks.
What gpu and cpu? Relatively they will perform the same assuming the same components. The power plan and cooling is near equal between this and the pro
I will just assume you had the graphics set to high and see how that compares.
Thanks for responding anyway :)
You can in custom mode its good can get the temps even to 65
@@حيدرسامي-ج yep, figured that out eventually, though then i worry about the fans lifespan, is that a thing to worry on gaming laptops? Im a first time owner
@@cupcakeobsession im too but some freinds said to me that fans are cheaper that a new laptop so yea but dont run it max all time just set a curve and 75-85 c is normal
@@cupcakeobsession there is not a lot of info about that kinda stuff in the internet i guess everyone can buy the same laptop twice
Does this laptop and Legion Y7000p the same ??
Hi man, would you recommend the Pro 5 gen 8 (7745HX + 4070) or the Slim 5 gen 9 (8845HS + 4060)? Both of them have the same panel, the 500 nits 1600p one.
In terms of temps, idling fans, battery life? They're at the same price and the 4070 looks like a no brainer but i hear some complains of throttling and poor battery life compared to the Slim, is it true? What do you say?
Bruh, getting the Pro 7i next week. Its gonna be litty
excellent
AMD is much better on battery still.
@@TechGuyBeau does performance, frame rate drop much when on battery though?
Just picked this non pro version.. but has 32gb ram.
Got the same but with i9 14 and 4070.
Have you tried it on video editing? And how is the cooling?
@@samiurkhan4362 Did you undervolt the CPU? If you did, could you share the stable settings of throttlestop?
can you make a video to the Yoga Slim 7X
Mine arrives Wednesday >:)
So yes… yes I can
Hi I'm thinking to get the lenovo legion 5i i7-13650HX because it's the cheaper one will it be cooler then this one? or should I go for the slim 5 RTX 4060 - R7 7435HS or with RTX 4070 - R7 8845HS but that's the most expensive one. I'm a casual gamer I mostly care about getting the one who get the least hot and will run guild wars 2 decent :3
i did tweak with my laptop thermal my cinibench score is 23800
Hey guys is this worth getting this in a 4070 version or is 4060 the move for the 5i
is there a performance difference between legion 5i and pro 5i
both with rtx 4060 and i7 14650hx?
They will be basically the same in performance
This one or Asus rog strix G16
Which one do you recommend?
personally i dont like the look of Strix laptops. they are good performing though
What would you say is better , Lenovo legion 5i rtx 4060 i7 13650hx with a 165hz panel or a hp victus 16 rtx 4070 amd 7840hs with a 240hz panel , considering I’m planning to run it for the next 4-5 years and and the victus is 50 dollars more expensive , would really love some input I’ve been stumped between the two for some time , I’m just not sure about the durability of the victus
Aorus 16x with rtx4070
Does it really come with 2 ssd slots? Because when i asked their support they said only one slot.
Mine came with 2. Just now I added 1TB SSD to the second slot.
GREAT REVIEW, IS THIS 4060 OR 4070? I SEE COSTCO IS SELLING THIS WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THEIR PRICE? I AM CANADIAN TOO.
These need better fan control. I don't mind a hotter laptop in exchange for less noise. My 4800H that's supported by LegionFanControl is inaudible unless I'm gaming or using handbrake. And even then I can barely hear the fans.
You use latest i9 or Ryzen ofcorsse it needs strong fan
@@retrogamer847 Nothing to do with the point I was making though.
Hi! Which is better Legion 5i (2024) or Legion 5i pro (2023)? Thank you!
Whichever is cheaper to be honest. Assuming the same GPU and similar CPU
So can i charge this laptop with the same charger i use for my phone? Any watt limit?
No the type c need to output 100 watt or 120 w i dont remember
@@حيدرسامي-ج it's 65w min
Why did you call it a mid range and slightly low range laptop?
It’s a lower midrange laptop. The 5i pro being true midrange.
@@TechGuyBeau Ok I asked because in India legion 5i costed me around 2118 USD for i9-14900HX , RTX 4070, 32GB RAM and 240HZ display
@@TechGuyBeau Is there any performance difference between a 5i and 5i pro with the same specs
Do u think its good to take legion 5i or to get 5i pro for 230$ more and do u think the pro is better than asus strix g16 ??
Asus has suspect warranty. If the screen and specs are equal on the 5i and 5i pro just get the cheaper one
Which one you prefer this or slim 5
Slim 5 for me
AMD is the better option in laptops currently
which one would you prefer? slim5 or 5i?
AMD
Does it have battery drop issue in custom mode?
Will the second ssd slots cater up to 2 tb?
Yes
For the budget I have I can get Lenovo legion 5i with i7 14700 and at the same price with the same specs but with i7 14650 Lenovo legion 5 pro, what is the main benefits if I want to go for pro?
You should go for 5i 14700HX rather than 5 pro (5i is better in some ways than 5 pro)
Should I buy lenevo legion 5 slim ryzen 7 8845hs with rtx4060 or lenevo legion 5i i7 14 gen with rtx 4050 .
Pleeez help I am going to buy next week and my preferences are gaming and programming
Please reply

Same price? If gaming then slim 5 is best option
programming is cpu intensive , I'd suggest you go with legion 5i with 4050 . also the terminals on the slim 5 aren't good enough
I suggest the i9 with 4060 and 32gb ram. $1299 at costco
Is this the 83dg00f5ph model?
Whats the diff b/w 5i and pro 5 aside specs
Got any information yet?
Unlike 3070/3070ti 1600p is too much for 4070-4060 to handle it so I think 1980×1200 is the sweet spot for it even though I will consider buying 3070ti over 4070 if it was available.
the 3070 does not outperform a 4070. In-fact i have done a dedicated video of a 3070ti legion versus a 4060 legion. Worth a watch i would think

-Legion 5i Gen 9 Intel: i7-14650HX - RTX 4060

This notebook is too thick and ugly compared to swift go \ zenbook but you have to admit it is the best thought-through configuration. Heat goes out from back, ports are on back, it has rgb keyboard, 2 xM2s which is needed for egpu or UMTS card.
Tried every laptop in the world if it has IPS panel no thank u , Mini led or Oled or skip., ...in a few year ips will be useless....
in a few years you’ll change it for a newer one anyways
