That one creepy curse from Chapter 209 may look fodder to Jujutsu Sorcerers but insanely scary in front of civilians. This implies that Jujutsu Sorcerers are a whole other level compared to the fear and fragility of normal humans lol.
You know the scary thing is that this is probably the most realistic way the fight would be seen, no fancy music, no commentary, everything gets destroyed like it was hit with a nuke.
Well the first time when it was released in the series, not everyone liked it and their was huge controversy on social media about the fight, about how the animator’s didn’t make a good job with animating this whole fight scene, but then later someone uploaded a Blue-Ray version of it on Twitter (X). I have watched the whole fight, but I don’t know where to watch the whole fight again.
You are right, sukuna's domain works like a nuke. It spreads the dust to create a chain reaction with the use of furnace and it also has a perfect circle impact similar to any nuke.
HOLY SHIT This scene was entirely transformed just from the SFX redesign. The eerie silence then accompanied by the natural, un-bass boosted apocalyptic sounds of Malevolent Shrine literally sent shivers. Nothing but the otherworldly screams from victims of the devourer of gods.
The sound design is made based on what the director requests, if this scene is not done this way in the anime it is because instead we have the excellent OST telling us more about Sukuna than his attack.
What I really have to point out in your sound design is, that every layer is clearly audible and "not just bass boosted". You feel the threat that radiates from Sukuna and the little pause at 00:58 with the reverb really made everything after even more impactful. Great job!
0:49 reminds me of King Crimson's sound effect. the deep bass and grungy horns, the material distortion, the universe tearing itself from the seams, and then the quiet before the chaos. very eerie and horrifying.
@@waffler-yz3gw idkd who did the subtitles for crunchyroll but they were really tripping. if they wanted to make it a distinct domain it could´ve been Malevolent Temple, but nope, Sukuna´s cooking apparently
That was a massive spoiler that they slipped because by the anime time nobody knew Sukuna's ability but on the Manga was revealed that his ability is literally cooking, he cuts then put the meal in the oven if you don't read the manga you could guess easily
@@mr.absolute8556 There's a lengthy explanation online why "kitchen" better describes the meaning of the japanese word, than shrine or temple. In the heian period there was a special building at the emperor's palace where they'd prepare the emperor's meals. It wasnt an ordinary kitchen, since the food prepared was for a "divine being" (the emperor). TLDR "malevolent temple/shrine" is where evil gets worshipped, malevolent "kitchen" is where the evil "cooks" i.e. originates from. Which is why Sukuna's abilities (paraphrasing) are "slice, dice, and roast".
The way the sounds of consecutive slashes circles around you when wearing headphones makes the domain actually sounds like its cutting everything around it into a million pieces until nothing but dust remains. Absolutely peak.
It is a difficult dilemma, on the one hand music can enhance the feeling of a scene x10 if used well but on the other hand you have to have the sound effects support everything that happens without music which as you said is more immersive but the effects sound are not so good, the scene will lose impact and I think this is the main reason why this does not happen very often, not only in anime but also in movies, series or video games, they will always play it safe by playing music instead of gambling. for the sound effects.
It really depends because it could be a slippery slope.....but if it's done well, it can elevate a scene, a good example would be the battle between paul atreides and feyd rauda in dune 2
I think the magic of the no music in fights comes from the fact that we are accustomed to fight scenes having intense music to elevate what we are seeing. It is sort of new or a surprise to our ears to only hear the raw sound effects carry the moment. I think having more no music in fights would ruin the magic of it, I think it deserves to belong in scenes where it makes sense to use it or really important fight scenes. Case in point: Hisoka vs. Gon in heaven’s arena.
This and the naruto vs. sasuke final battle are prime examples of how not every action scene needs OST. The action choreography and sfx have much more room to breathe now and go from something hype to downright bone chilling. Hats off to you job well done.

I love your sound design and have kept up with listening to this since your bleach video! Your capturing of the essence in environments is really amazing and the fx work on the characters when they announce their actions were a highlight! I do want to make one comment if I can for future reference: to have more growth and change of tambre in sounds as environmental effects get amplified. This has been the hardest for be as well in my own work as there are limitations to how much a sound can be distorted or changed during the edit, but when it finally does meld, that small change in tone creates beautiful turns in tension and weight. Really love your stuff. Cant wait to keep listening to more of your growing works!
The booming, almost battle/cargo ship-like horn when the domain is cast is something that i actually enjoy so much. It is imposing, loud and absolute. It demands your attention, and it gives off this sense of something colossal due to it's association with ships that are usually massive in nature. Like a herald, bringing the attention to who you should look towards in his shrine, Sukuna himself. Before he minces you into a trillion different incoherent, bloody pieces, that is.
I think this style of sound design is perfect for the show. My greatest love for this project being the lack of music in the background. Instead of feeling like a cinematic performance, it feels more real and tangible like watching powerful animals fighting to the death on a documentary. The dedication to having this fight feel like a privilege to witness instead of a spectacle to be entertained by gives a tear-jerking level of respect for the audience. Thank you for making this video, my dude. Please keep it up. Edit: ImportMaple, if you’re reading this, consider doing a sound redesign of Aki vs. Katana Man from Chainsaw Man.
