It's so funny how everything wants to kill you in Morrowind but especially in the water... Swimming is the most uncomfortable thing to do in TES 3 Morrowind
Morrowind is the only one of the three where you can stack Swift Swim magic to the point where you can achieve warp speed in water. I don't know how you guys were playing, but if I was in trouble in Morrowind, I'd head straight for the nearest river and jump in because there was no way anything could keep pace with me in the water.
The real skyrim experience is accidently dipping your big toe in the water while you're going for a nirnroot then getting fast travel blocked by the slaughterfish on the last pixel of the games load distance.
Most dangerous thing in Morrowind, that when you swimming from point A to point B, you get so much combat experience, that it make golden Saints disappearing from the map.

I also tend to avoid swimming in many places in Skyrim, luckily I found a mod that adds water walking. Not because the dangerous wild life but because I play with Frostfall and running around in wet clothes will cause me to succumb to the cold.
The thing about swimming that creeps me out in Skyrim isn't the shallow lakes and rivers. It's the deep water where you don't see a thing, or swimming on the surface across deep water. But I know there probably aren't any large vicious creatures out there. Probably.
I'll never forget the Giant Slaughterfish, it started out looking like a regular one then it just kept getting closer and bigger... and bigger... and bigger T-T
I remember that Water Walking and Water Breathing were incredibly important skills in Morrowind because something was trying to kill me all the time. That was one reason why I chose Alteration as one of my main skills in Oblivion and then was sort of disappointed that I didn't need it that much anymore.
