- I was surprised to see that this one didn't already exist on UA-cam or Niconico (I did eventually find an obscure one on Bilibili but the quality was rather low), especially since it's quite simple in both idea and execution. Video sped up. Uses FileTypesMan and Python PIL.

He's got the code for all his stuff on his GitHub, but not his "computer science stuff" - which seems related. I really would like to see it as well...
Just because I haven't seen anyone else mention it: you could improve horizontal resolution by incorporating ASCII art (or even the █ symbol) into file names or by making file names consist only of non-printable characters.
Before I'll add my unnecessary input - good work dude! There's definitely quite a lot of effort thrown into this vid and I haven't even thought about using file icons as a display.
Now, back to the backseat programming - you could further increase the resolution by using Unicode characters: Quadrants (Upper Left - '▘', Upper Right - '▝', Upper Left and Lower Right - '▚'), Blocks ('▀' - Upper Half Block).
I don't think it breaks the spirit of the video, since those are still effectively pixels.
Obviously this breaks the file ordering. I've tried yeeting hundreds of zero-width spaces at the problem, but Windows 255 character file name limit was a problem. However you should be able to encode those numbers (in binary?) as a combination of non-printable characters (zero-width space, zero-width non-joiner etc.) and let Windows sort them somehow. I'm not sure if ordering them by creation date works (since they're created/modified at the same time), but you also could sort them by size and slightly change the size of each file.
Can't wait to see something as ridiculous - maybe on a zoom call or a Christmas tree.
Adding non printable characters to file name would mess up the position of png files. I believe.
Though, my suggestion would be incorporating shapes into those png files, which matches the corner of bad apple.
@@int16_t It would mess up the original positioning/naming system, but you could design one that's built entirely of non-printable chars (since Win should recognize them and order the files accordingly. Alternatively you could have positioning system based on file size.

Also, I'm not sure if windows would accept non printable characters (0-31) and others. On a linux system, when I tried open writing file name with decimal 1 2 3 4, i got ''$'\001\002\003\004' as a file name.

The original solution only changes file extension (so their icons are different), the files themselves are empty (and invalid). We can create them as text files of any size and change their extension.
"Also, I'm not sure if windows would accept non printable characters..." It definitely allows zero-width spaces (U+200B) - I've tested it. Even if it doesn't allow all non-printable characters, you should be able to find another one and essentially use them as "0" and "1" of a binary system.
Win and Linux use a different file system so results from one will likely not transfer to the other one.

At this point the only thing left to do is fuse Bad Apple!! with Doom as a music-video-FPS and run it with Tesla coils or burn each frame into the Moon with lasers or something.

Wouldn't it be possible to make it generate images that consist of multiple pixels of the animation, giving a higher resolution to work with? I know it wouldn't happen, because it would be a nightmare to code, but it seems like it could theoretically work.

@@lilyyy411 omg. I'm still learning coding and currently making a discord bot. I decided to change how my bot would save sata in my database and suddenly everything broke. I also didn't have any backup at that time so i just decided to go trough with it and try to fix it. Took me a couple of hours but eventually I fixed it. I think i was tearing up when i fixed it lol
