    There are many videos about Scotland and most are very good, this was one of the poorest I have ever seen, there are so many fantastic reasons to visit, live, be Scottish, but as you mentioned about the narrator being an American, and the video was very much focused on money, the British very rarely mention money and religion, but this was very much a US centric video.
    Right at the beginning you paused to mention about the beauty of the landscape and you will see much more like that with videos about all four countries of the UK and Northern Ireland, her pronunciation was quite poor too, Edinburgh became Edinberg, you have the right idea though with regard to taking a look at the countries that are here and the differences between each of them, even though we are a cluster of small islands there is "for its size" an extraordinary amount of beautiful places to see and all with wildly different accents even 10 minutes up the road and I'm not exaggerating there, I recently saw on a video that there are 300 different accents in the UK, honestly it is many more, I like the content that you make, you don't take yourself too seriously, you are open to having a laugh while being intelligent too, a combination that many Americans don't seem to have, but those which do are a pleasure to watch, the funniest video of yours that I have seen is the British chocolates one with your daughters, the longer it went on the higher you all became, it was comedy gold.
    Take care :)

    2:14 The kilt is a development of the traditional (male) highland dress known as a plaid. This was a large woollen blanket which was wrapped around the body and secured with a belt at the waist. It functioned as garment, tent and blanket. After the most recent Jacobite rising, it was adapted (rather than adopted) as a military uniform for the newly-formed Highland Regiments which were created to let the former clansmen continue fighting (on behalf the British crown this time). 4:20 Don't worry ! It _is_ the Elizabeth Tower.
    5:13 The aim is to get as many of your curling stones as close to the center of the target as possible. Four players per side (two turns each), toss a coin to see who starts. The captain of the team lurks at the target end to indicate how their player is to aim and how hard to slide it. The brush is used to hasten the stone without touching it on the way to the target and your opponent can brush any stone that goes past the target to hasten it into the dead area at the end of the ice.

    Lived all over Scotland and what a country it is. I live in Glasgow now but I once lived on the Shetland Isles, the most northerly point in the UK. Used to climb the hills and play in old WW2 bunkers etc as a kid. You can just hop in a small boat and travel between all the small islands and go fishing, find abandoned castles. There is some really old shit to be found outwith the cities. The current capital city of Edinburgh itself was actually built on top of an entire city. My aunt lives there and I always make a point of doing one of the underground city ghost tours when I visit. Multiple games and movies are set in the Scottish Highlands. The Kilt was a battle dress thing really. Back when the clans existed & they were at war with each other, tweed was the cloth that was used for clothing. And it wasn't cheap, so wearing tweed trousers during battle obv caused a lot of garment damage by blood stain or being cut. So the kilt was designed to wear in to battle so that it could be easily removed before battle & put back on after, without it getting damaged... Yes, Scotsmen battled with their junk out, no underwear. Which is why you'll also hear the ancient question 'what does a Scotsman wear under his kilt?' Because if he is wearing it properly, the answer is, he wears nothing under it. A 'true' Scotsmen goes commando... And as for the getting confused at the start with where everything was, if you listen to what she is saying instead of trying to work things out in your head you might be less confused (It's a common thing I see with US reactors learning about the UK.) As the pic of the Elizabeth Tower was being shown, she was telling you ppl think Bond & Holmes came from London, hence the pic of London... The clock tower you seen before that was in Edinburgh. And it's not really a tower as such, as it sits on a building instead of standing tall on it's own (I think it was the Balmoral Hotel on Princes St). And there's quite a lot of clock towers on buildings in most major Scottish cities... As for #7, although rue, it wasn't a unique thing to Scotland, that was a global issue... And Scotland is not a Catholic country, it's mainly Christian but not Catholic. Catholics were seen as a minority at one time & treated the same. Employers were told not to employ them, to the point employers put on job adverts, 'Catholics need not apply.'

    Has to be the worst video I've ever seen about my home country. From mispronunciation of Edinburgh ( as usual), to thinking England is Britain, to talking about inventions and not mentioning the TV , I could go on.
    You should maybe check out Scotland's influence in The USA and Canada, might be of interest to you. Scots helped set up both countries education, medical and political systems. Most of your former presidents are of Scottish or Scots Ulster descent. Most of the civil war generals on both sides had Scottish descent. Even the term 'hillbilly ' is derived from Scots immigrants to the USA.

  • @Bazk01
    @Bazk01 Рік тому +3

    Going into battle naked painted blue was something the picts and celts done around the time of the Romans. The kilt started as a big wooly blanket. It was called the great plaid. You wore a shirt and then you wrapped the blanket around you in a specific way. It got folded a certain way then you lay on it and ran a belt around it to secure it to you in place of trousers. There was enough left over to pull up over your shoulder as a cape in bad weather, or to be pinned to the shoulder of your shirt in nice weather. You slept in the blanket at night. It was worn into battle because it was all most people had. Over centuries it got cut in half, the pleats got sewed in and tabs attached to make it easier to wear. It's a tradition. The thing about clan tartans is also something that developed more over time. It was always part of the Scottish soldiers uniform and the reputation of our soldiers over the centuries meant the kilt was considered manly and official wear at weddings, parties and such. It's traditional in the same way Greeks wear slippers with hooked toes and tassles or Egyptians wore fez's..

      Not so. The unicorn is a symbol of virginity associated with the Virgin Mary. The Scottish coat of arms is supported (held up) by two unicorns. Her assertion that Scotland is a mainly Catholic country is (as with much else in this video) wrong/misleading. The majority of Scots aligning themselves with any particular religious tradition belong to the Church of Scotland, a protestant institution. These were the findings of the last Scottish census:
    Not religious (36.7%)
    Church of Scotland (32.4%)
    Catholic Church (15.9%)
    Other Christian (5.5%)
    Islam (1.4%)
    Other religions (1.2%)
    Not stated (7.0%)
    Re child abuse in religious settings, there are plenty of well-documented cases in other religious groups too including the Anglican/Episcopalian Church, Salvation Army, Jehovah Witnesses, and the list goes on. The Catholic Church's part is so widespread partly because it's the most massive worldwide religious organization, but the vow of so-called priestly celibacy and resultant sexual repression has a good deal to do with it as well.

    • @karasaunty9823
      @karasaunty9823 Рік тому +1

      Thank you for indicating that it is not only the Catholic Church that suffers from these issues, my Christian brother!
      I must point out, though, that priestly celibacy and sexual repression have little to nothing to do with abuse cases, regardless of the religious group concerned. Predators will insinuate themselves into whatever occupation will give them easy access to victims, therefore religious institutions are an attractive prospect for them. As are teaching, coaching, Boys' Brigade/Girl Guides, schools, etc.
      The issue isn't celibacy - it's infiltration.
      It is worth mentioning that true and virtuous Catholic priests (96% of them) are not sexually oppressed. It is easy to think this because sexualisation is such an unfortunately massive part of our society and becoming more so as the years go by. Taking a vow of celibacy does not mean Priests are choosing to oppress a natural inclination. It means freeing oneself from the yearnings and urges thrown in our path by an increasingly Godless society who view sex as a disposable, pleasurable pastime and not the procreative act of love it was intended to be between a man and woman within the bonds of sacred matrimony. Is it always easy for them? Of course not! Then why do it? Because it is a holy way to prove their love to God. - to show Him that He is worth the sacrifice of a family, because He is the greatest love one could ever have. It's a small sacrifice to God, but it's a great one for man which is why God prizes it so highly.
      Anyway, just wanted to make sure you know how thankful I am that you wanted to set the record straight. From a fellow Christian (Catholic, in case it wasn't obvious!), God bless you and yours.

    • @ando19bs
      @ando19bs 8 місяців тому

      How can you defend the undefendable child abuse in the Roman Catholic church is endemic with the cover up by their hierachy right up to the pope making it 10 times worse. Forcing priests to be unaturally celebate is probably the main reason so please don't drag other organisations into it and don't drag Scotland into it as 90% of Catholics in Scotland are from Irish decent making it 15% of the total population 42% protestant, 40% no religion.@@karasaunty9823

    Loved the intro James!!! Like some drill rappers, ‘No face, no case!’ Lol!
    Some things I picked up on in the video:
    The first clip of the clock tower that looks like Elizabeth Tower/ Big Ben was the clock tower at the Balmoral Hotel in Edinburgh. It’s beside Waverley Station so always runs 2 or 3 mins fast so people don’t miss their train!
    The Balmoral hotel itself is beautiful, I’ve been lucky to stay there quite a few times and love it! The last time I stayed was for a milestone birthday and they upgraded us to the JK Rowling suite when we checked in - very cool suite where JK Rowling apparently finished writing one of the Harry Potter books. It had loads of original items relating to Harry Potter on display in the suite - in locked glass cabinets! I love a free upgrade lol!
    Even though I only stay 40 mins on the train from Edinburgh, I love staying there for a mini break on special occasions!
    The 2nd time they showed a clock tower in the video, was the Tower/ Big Ben so you were right!
    Re ‘Dolly’ the sheep - one of my friends was part of the team of scientists from The Roslin Institute that cloned Dolly! Couple of things he told me 1. she had to be put to sleep when she was only 6 as she had a form of lung cancer - apparently totally unrelated to her being cloned.
    2. She had 6 lambs - incl a set of twins and a set of triplets. 3. She was named after Dolly Parton!
    After her death, a taxidermist preserved Dolly and she’s now on display in the National Museum in Edinburgh.
    I’m sure others will have pointed it out, but the statements relating to abuse within the Catholic Church was wildly inaccurate. Yes, it has happened and is absolutely awful, but saying this occurs in ‘most’ or ‘lots’ of Catholic Churches is unfair. I think you got that from the video though.
    Curling is great fun - and a lot harder than it looks! Lol!
    Elephant Polo?!? I had no idea that was a thing in Scotland! Lol!

      I always learn so much from your comments Emma. The only time I've ever heard anyone talking about a cjir h molesting children it always seems like it's a cathic church. I'm not sure why but the mainstream media (from my perspective) is always talking about some catholic church molestation scandal.

    The video you watched was bizarre! I'm from Scotland. Some of the pronunciation was terrible, and the use of "England", "and "Britain" wrong in some instances and would be confusing to anyone who doesn't know the facts. I'm Scottish and live in Scotland. It has its faults, like everywhere does, but it's a great place and I love living here. I enjoy visiting other countries, and have been fortunate enough to have been able to visit many, but there is nowhere I'd rather have as home than Scotland.
    I hope you get a chance to visit, but check out some other videos that are much more representative than this one you watched.

Also...IT AINT EDINBURG! xD

    The kilt has come to signify a natural and unmistakable masculinity, but it has a long history of outside intervention and deliberate reinvention. From its origins as the basic garb of the Highlander, Scotsmen and non-Scotsmen alike have embraced it as uniform, formal and semi-formal wear, and casual everyday wear and it was easier for battles

Priests get a bad name as the Catholic church is hides Al the Beasts (Scotland's mostly Protestant) never seen Lacrosse in my life here either lol it's also the murder capital of Europe. Mostly Glasgow area in the most part. True about intentions we've came up with a lot. Trump's mother was Scottish infact she had the same second name as myself. The humour is very unique also can be very brutal. My channels full of Scottish comedy Tv shows you will see what I mean with the humour if you have a look. I agree with the comments in regards to poor reference to Scotland and Scottish culture and history. Kilts historically show which clan you belong to depending on your surname, and many other reasons that date back centuries. Also please learn how to pronounce our towns and cities! Us Scot’s are very patriotic and passionate about our country and people in it. Also we are not overly religious country and the information in regards to Catholic priests is not specifically just in Scotland. Abuse scandals related to catholic priests is known worldwide!

Originally the 9 metres would just be wound round the body. Please come to Scotland we'd love to see you and take you out for a few drams (whiskey). Some parts of Scotland they still pour a dram over their morning porridge. Also Edinburgh is built around a volcano... Arthurs' Seat

    you asked about the Kilt ! just a little factoid for you is that original word in Gaelic for kilt is " Philabeg " which apparently was a plaid which was gathered around the waist and fastened with a belt - way way back in the day ! You also may hear the bagpipes being referred to a a " Pibroch " which is not quite accurate as the word Pibroch refers to pipe music rather than the instrument itself. pps. Curling stones are made from a particular type of granite stone from ! ailsa Craig " a small volcanic plug island of the Ayrshire coast in the west of Scotland - another thing that is worth a look at - very interesting how these are made and how the stone is " rationed " per annum ! Whoah ! I was enjoying this until this woman started slagging off Trump who's Grandmother is Scottish and her assertions about the Catholic priests in Scotland, even if true, is out of place on here !! There is another time and place to air that sort of stuff !! - sorry I'm out of here - Catch you next time !
