  • iCyclone's Hurricane Michael Chase: Intense footage from the violent inner core and eye of Category-5 Michael at ground zero: Callaway, Florida.
    This storm will be fully explored in my new TV show, Hurricane Man. Produced by ScreenDog Productions, it will be the definitive hurricane series, coming out in 2019 on Dave and UKTV Play in the United Kingdom, and being distributed by BBC Studios for the rest of the world.

    This was a violent, violent hurricane. 2018 was pissed that forecasters lowered their predictions for the season and pulled no punches.

    Strongest winds I have witnessed personally was around 90-100mph during a very violent microburst in Arizona, a few years ago. The force of wind that fast is absolutely biblical, but I can't imagine the raw terror and force that 155 or higher like Michael had.
    incredible footage from one of the most hardcore hurricane chasers out there, well done!

    i actually read the official report where they upgraded it to a cat 5 and they were being fairly conservative when they decided it was _at least_ 160mph. its actually possible that it was 165 or more, but they didnt have as much data to reliably support those speeds. doesnt mean that it didnt reach those speeds, they just felt more comfortable with saying it was definitely at least 160 because they had more data to support that. and if you find it hard to believe that it could accelerate so quickly, just look more closely at that satelite clip at the start of this video. you can see just how quickly the spin suddenly accelerates after the eye becomes a uniform circle, right before landfall. the acceleration that occurs at that moment is actually clearly visible and pretty dramatic. and this seems to be pretty typical behavior with category 5's from what i've seen over the past couple of decades. usually when a storm reaches cat5 strength and becomes annular, they dont tend to spend a lot of time at 160 or 165 mph, instead the wind speed quickly jumps straight up to 175 - 185 mph and holds it there untill something happens to destabilize the spin and it loses its uniform shape (usually an ERC or some dry air). had michael not been coming ashore at that time, i have no doubt it would have rapidly strengthened to 175+ mph by the end of that day.

    • @lordmatthewanunnahybrid1356
      @lordmatthewanunnahybrid1356 Рік тому

      Oh yes. They just upgraded Ian the other day even tho recon easily found cat5 winds hours before landfall and even a 212mph gust at like 2k ft high.
      You nailed it, when these cat 5s hit at peak intensity they do so much more intense damage. Michael’s satellite loop looks every bit as impressive as 175mph hurricanes we’ve seen in recent years. I’d bet that Michael was really 170+.
      Fort Myers beach and Sanibel island were destroyed but nothing like what happened in Mexico beach during Michael. Look how thick and powerful that eyewall is at landfall. It leveled a lot of trees like an ef3 tornado for miles inland.

    3:50 This part of Florida had some great trees. Thousands of square miles devastated! A lot were crops, grown for the paper industry. But, there were also great forests of old growth oak and magnolia. Very few survived in the strike zone, those that did were mauled, denuded, stripped of major branches. To me, as a resident, that is the saddest thing.
    With so many landmarks destroyed (including the trees), it took a while to get used to navigating around the east side of town.

    I remember it coming though our area with really bad like 60+ mile an hour winds and I lived in a place we’re hurricanes don’t come through normally so.. I thought my window were gonna bust open because they keep shaking so hard. I was scared to death that whole night but what y’all got was 20xs worse. Hurricanes are scary man.

    This is scary. Thank Goodness you did not have a big storm surge, though, that is the most dangerous aspect of a hurricane.

    Me and my family sat in our mobile home during this storm and we were out of power for like 2 months and the Florida panhandle lost over a million trees

    So how does Michael rank against Haiyan? Keep in mind you were on Michael's weaker left side as opposed to Haiyan's stronger northern quadrant; however, you were on the outer parameter of Michael's eyewall, which I do not believe was the case of Haiyan.
