    Awesome video! I really appreciate the showing of things going wrong and would even be interested in seeing how you found and fixed the problem with pattern. I’ve made a few frame bags and the thing that has helped most is to get that overall gusset length and add 2-3 inches to the end. Then line up the bolt hole locations and sew it on, not closing the loop of the gusset. Then you can adjust the length and have perfect corners. I even think that is why all these custom bag makers have the hydration port or cable port. It really just hides that adjustment room.

    I made a frame bag last summer and will be making another in a few weeks. I did the cardboard mentioned and the the 2" sides extra long and sewed them together after attaching them to the sides. I started and ended before one of the radius corners. That bag was a strap on version and I'll be making a bolt on in a few weeks and intend on creating the holes after it all together, so I don't need to align anything.

    Cool job regardless of the outcome, and I liked it. Glad I watched until the end with all of your humor. Funny. Needed the laugh. Thank you. Glad to see some honest results and not all the perfect results that are always uplaoded. Would love having one of those sewing machines, but don't think the wife will let that happen anytime soon. Looks like fun. Keep up the good work.

    Son just ask me to make this... I'm fully manual, so talk about gusset making. Also using domestic machine, always a challenge! Your work is always amazing and inspiring! ❤️

      Awesome! Thanks for the kind words!
      For the gusset you just add up the total distance taken from the cardboard trace and use that as the total length of the gusset! Then decide on a width, add your seam allowance to everything, and you’re good to go!

      @@BagBuff but the corners always throw me off - the curves? I get the straight sides length (3) added up, but how do you accommodate the rounded corners?

    • @BagBuff
      @BagBuff  3 роки тому +1

      Same way. You measure the length of the corners on what will be the stitch line (not the seam allowance).
      The length of the stitch lines should all be equal. The length of the seam allowance line is nothing to pay attention to.

    Thanks for this. As a garment sewer that computer program makes it look more complicated to me. The cardboard looks easier. I'll have to see if son wants plastic added. Something for structure but he looking for waterproof and light.

    Watching this series with interest. I have fabric purchased for a frame bag, need to come up with a pattern. Interesting idea using PE foam to add rigidity. Is the liner fabric necessary? Just to avoid damaging the PE foam?
    My plan is for my bag to have two compartments. I plan to keep a 3L hydration bag in the top part, and some smaller items in the bottom. Need to figure out the best way to sew a divider.

    • @BagBuff
      @BagBuff  3 роки тому +3

      I’m considering doing a divider as well. I’ll sew one side into the lining and have the other side attach via Velcro.
      As for lining, I would say yes if you’re using foam. No if you aren’t.

      Do the hydration bag on the bottom. The weight down low will be noticeably better.
      Also try Velcro for the shelf.

    Always helpful to watch others not quite get it on the first go. Looking pretty nice so far either way. Are you familiar with rivnuts? If you are cool with drilling holes in your frame you could add rivnuts to the underside of the top tube for a totally bolted bag. Hoping to start on bicycle panniers for myself in the near future.

    Great video! I'm working on a similar frame bag, first time making one. When you add one or more zippers to a side panel, it's shape or dimensions can change a bit. Mine shrinks a bit due to the seam allowance I'm consuming on the zipper. Do you then remake or resize the other panel to get it to match the panel with the zippers? ( This changing of size during zipper install may also be caused by my lack of experience sewing.) Would you recommend either modifying the non-zipper panel to match? or start with larger seam allowances on the outside of the panel with zippers to account for this change in size? Thanks!

    what type of plastic/foam do you use to add stiffness??
