  • What does neuroscience have to say about free will? Is free will in conflict with the laws of physics or observations from neuroscience? What does "free will" even mean? These are ancient philosophical questions, but they have important implications for our daily lives, from how we make choices to how we can improve ourselves. In this episode of The Social Brain, we'll discuss the fascinating science and philosophy of free will from a neuroscientific perspective.

Hey everyone, thanks for watching! Just FYI, at about 1:12:45, we ended the stream but for some reason it kept going for about 5 minutes 🙃 So we got through the full episode, but just wanted to let you know that timestamp is the end. Thanks!

Do you guys realize what is implied by your choices being "predetermined?" Who exactly is doing the mental work to make the decision, and what is your brain there for exactly? Is it just a pass-through for the will of the universe? If you want to talk science, you can't use a title filled with mysticism.

Sorry I missed this live! I have sooo many questions and thoughts on this interesting subject. Robert Sapolsky and Sam Harris are two people whose lectures sparked deeper interest and understanding.

Great UA-cam channel. You both have great personalities and insightful knowledge. Just some “cosmetic” feedback: Taylor has an unconscious laugh he expresses every few seconds or so. May want to be mindful of that. Great job, otherwise, guys!

Physics is not deterministic, there are no "chains of causation" and Robert Sapolsky spews sophistry in the pursuit of absolution from his own conscience. I made it 7 minutes in, but if you accept determinism and Sapolsky, then your conclusion is indeed predetermined.

Sounds like you're just not willing to listen to this whole way through as it shatters your perception of free will. Sounds sad.

@@danielsparks1848 I actually went back to the video after it kept showing up on my home page. They immediately started talking about morality and blameworthiness, so I stopped again. If they can't even stick to science and reality for 10 minutes, then they should have called their video, "Morality + Free Will".
You can approach this subject from two different angles (at least). If you are worried about Ultimate Judgement by your deity of choice, then there is nothing to discuss about neuroscience or predeterminism. Your supreme being can do whatever he/she/it wants and there's nothing you can do about it, but pray.
If you are curious as to whether we are some sort of cosmic puppets controlled by particle interaction, or whether nature doesn't work that way and our choices are our own, then let's talk about that. If you keep switching between the two, you will get nothing but confusion.
I appreciate your concern about my "perception of free will," but since I don't believe in any sort of Ultimate Judge, I have no concern about Ultimate Judgement. I do find the subject quite fascinating, especially the bizarre rationalizations of determinists that does make you wonder about their true motives.

    Yes obviously. Due to physics.
