Thanks for this video, Phandrel; I agree with all your points. I'm late to the party here, but I wanted to add something that you sort of touched on in relation to your 6th point. When I started, I kept hearing that the game was easy, especially OW and Story. People said just go full glass dps and git gud. This attitude almost pushed me away from the game, because I was overwhelmed, confused, kept dying, and was not understanding wtf was going on. I asked about passive defences and was told no, they're bad, you'll be griefing other players if you invest in them. It was only once I stopped listening to these people and started playing on a boosted character with full Celestial that I was like "WAIT... now I'm not dying and can actually process what's going on??". I made my next goal full Celestial on all classes, and started speccing all my builds with passive defence traits and skills, and suddenly the game was AMAZING. It took me literally hundreds of hours to start moving towards more glassy builds. Now I'm finally a decent player (maybe 7/10, not great, but good enough) that I can gear full Berserker's and still not die. I now understand both perspectives; I can see why players were saying you don't need defences, but also understand that some players will benefit immensely from them. So to add on to your 6th point: I never tell players that passive defences are "bad". Instead, as you noted about context, I think we should be letting players know that passive defences aren't required in group content when you have good supports, but they can still be very helpful when you're learning and/or playing solo. There are ways to gear and spec with more defences that don't take too much investment, such as buying Masterwork Trinkets with Toughness/Vitality for
Awesome addition/context, thanks! I fully agree that staying alive long enough to learn what's going on is such an invaluable thing. Without Sacrificing some offense for defense, I'd also have never learned to do the HoT Hero Points probably.
I've recently started playing the game and my goal is to get full sets of weapons and armor with Celestial stats. This way i don't have to worry about stats and just focus on other aspects
I would say the best/ easiest and most fun to get gold for new players is Auric basin you get alot of stuff there and the meta is done within like 2_3 minutes. Love it.
The "Everything works in open world" attitude is why I see so many blowhard glass cannons die to anything stronger than a vet, in Hot maps especially. Once they blow all their dodges/DCDs, and discover "gosh that champ didn't melt in one rot?" only then does it occur to them, "Oh yeah, I don't have a pocket healer." ...Even if you focus on playing primarily with others, don't underestimate the value of having access to at least one self-sufficiency Champ-soloable open world build.
For sure, it's important to at least have an appropriate amount of survivability. I think more people could be encouraged to learn their way around their class, so they can adapt when they run into something their build is bad at.
I dunno who needs to hear this but if you've ever asked for gold making advice and have been told to "work at mc donalds, easy 200g+/h", I'm sorry to break it to you but that's not good advice, these people have a serious spending problem, don't be like them.
Fortunately, this isn't common advice. I have literally never heard of this "advice" before this video (and surprise, surprise, it came from reddit...)
Been playing for more than a months now, and I would say if really want to grind gold just do fractals even tier 1 fractals are good enough because eventually there will be experience player would just carry you throughout even myself included when I first started. They carried me all the way up to tier 3 fractals given the fact that I don’t have enough Agony. For me personally doing fractals for tier 1 and 2 easily gets you 5-10 gold depending how you long you going to do it for. Those fractal encryption you get just have to unlock with the key which you could purchase. Another thing I did was hammering HoT events And back and forth between the events and fractals, doing it for a week can easily make you 200 gold or more. Your source of currency is based on your item which in this case unidentified gears especially the rare once. I don’t have IBS nor EOD but HoT and fractals really helps. I never done raids because most of the time it’s hard to find even in LFG because of players already have their groups/guild mates to do it . Strikes, I only done it once but because I don’t have IBS it’s hard for me to open the chest at the end because I don’t have the expansion nor mastery. My safest bet it’s just Hot events and fractals. You can grind ascended gear just by checking your collection in your achievements tabs it may take a while but I don’t really rush for it or you can take much easier route by buying it at the wizard vault.
Contrary to belief, doing map events alone can earn you some decent "gold" over time. There are many people that don't do group content, I've come across many that are that way, which is fine, each their own. Fractals, raids, SM's, they all earn you gold. To me, it just depends on how fast you want to get there. I'm a bit of a hoarder, I sell junk items constantly, and pending on rather or not I need the mats for crafting, I sell some items on the TP. Be surprised as to how much one can make. A few gold here and there may not sound like much to many but, it adds up fast. Honestly, to me, meta's, and now, rifts. IMHO, fishing is a joke, yes I know, it can be a big gold maker but, for what purpose does fishing serve actually? Great video, cheers :)
Thanks! And you hit the nail on the head about doing events, even solo. I started doing specific expansion maps for the currencies to finish some achievements, or collections, and was positively surprised by the amount of gold I was making on top.
I've never done any instanced group content in this game. All of my gold has come from open world or metas. Fishing made me a ton of gold but most find it boring. haha Holiday events like Halloween and Wintersday is also when you can stock up on gold.
One of the biggest draws of GW2, in my opinion, is just that. There are so many ways to acquire gold, resources, or even other items that you're rarely forced to do something you don't like.
I actually did some days of side job to pay for the game's expacs and seasons plus some gems for bag space. Had a few hundred extra bucks for just about the equivalent of 2 days worth of my regular job. But this isn't something everyone can realistically do and the stars aligned so to speak for me to do that.
Well, I have played quite an amount of fractals in the lasts months. Enough to get the omnipotion that is. Almost always I lack behind in dps, as soon as i become top dps, the group is usually struggling. This means I might not be a backback for others, but certainly get more carried, than I am carrying others. Nevertheless the only times i got kicked, was mainly because I was not saying hi fast enough :p As soon as you reach T4 runs become smooth. There is barely any rage, even after several failed boss fights. After the second or third usually people start to leave, but thats is understandable. Of course not every player is or wants to go for perfect rotations and max dps, but this is not necessary at all. Without a decent build, it is going to be hard of course, but noone wants to be carried around all the time?!
This is a good one - especially about the real life -> gold debate. Sure it's without a doubt the most time efficient way to get gold, you're not playing the game at that point!
Everyone can gather materials, it might not be good gold, but farming iron/platinum ore and elderwood logs is a gold here and there. Played for 9 years btw xd
Why do we endorse the idea of having new players receiving all sorts of advice from us? You people are so egoccentric and needy that you have to let others look up to you and think "oh this guy knows so much" "oh thank you a dozen times" "oh i woulndt be here if it wasnt for you"... Cut the crap my friends, stop being needy for external recognition. One of the best aspects of coming to a game is DISCOVERY. Having to figure things out, searching in the wiki, trying things, messing up. All you overselfglorified people thinking you have the divine task of cutting off the "game childhood" of other players are just narcissistic. Would you be the kind of parents giving 1million dollars to a 10 year old kid and putting him to run a company? Or do you let the kid learn about life, and let him figure out how to earn things? There are players that regardless what, want to dive in fast, i reckon that. The only advice you need to tell them is to join a dedicated guild for whatever they want to do. The forums and reddit have hundreds of speciallized guilds that will teach everything in every way. I myself run a pvp wvw tecahing guild. But i dont go around in map chat telling people what to do or dont. I also dont take in people under certain AP. I only take in people that have tried, have earned some experience by themselves and now want to see how to go the next step.
Best way to get geared is the Wiz Vault. 2 updates fully geared one character.

Man, i agree. I had so many wrong advices early but it's okay. I try to help out my guildies from what i've learned :)
IBS fast 5 are the best start point for new players, in my opinion
Maybe point em to easy 3 first 😅

I swear i dislike those who always say “just do fractals for easy income”, like fractals is full of toxic rage players why should I join it?

HoT is great for newer players. The metas are good and toss a lot of loot and it's easy to get fully geared pretty quickly.....

my experience is that mondays are as bad as fridays
Oh, interesting. Maybe it has to do with time of the day/region? I usually find quite a few listings for a W1-4 clear on Monday.
Everyone can gather materials, it might not be good gold, but farming iron/platinum ore and elderwood logs is a gold here and there.
Played for 9 years btw xd
I paid for my first legendary by gathering platinum all days, every day :D
I don't even bother to answer when someone ask for best place to farm gold.
Is that so hard to play the game?
