In Baton Rouge we used to have a place called Alligator Bayou. Its closed now, but you were able to use a canoe to paddle around the gators. They were absolutely uninterrupted and not interested in us. The Swamp Rats were more of an issue

I try telling people all the time that alligators rarely will mess with humans. Since I was a little kids I've swam within just a few yards of them, I've caught them by hand and walked on leashes, and have even learned that if one comes up towards you, hit that thing in the nose and jump back, it'll swipe it tail at you and if it misses you it'll just continue back on its way and leave you alone. They really are absolutely amazing and beautiful creatures and very smart as well
