It Cost Me $32k to Paint this? Here's why

  • What are you willing to do to make the work you want to make? Have you invested what is required to get you where you want to go? These are the questions I ask myself consistently and what I arise in this video. Talking about the 32k that I have invested into the work, even though that doesn't even scratch the surface of things. Hopefully this video sparks some though and you enjoy the process of this painting.

I graduated from one of the best conservatories in the US for violin, I learned absolutely nothing new there, as I’m from Eastern Europe and our education is far ahead of the US- I got an expensive piece of paper, a brand name on my education, but the way that worked was they just don’t accept anyone who isn’t already at the level of someone graduating from there. I was lucky to have a full ride, but still had to borrow for living expenses. I wish i could go to art school to learn all the techniques needed. I had a friend who went to MassArt, and all they had her do is a ton of practice paintings, but her technique was completely absent. Maybe it was a stage of art schools trying not to “squash artistic spirit by making them draw circles.

Yea, they seemingly won’t take a look at you without the credentials, but everyone who gets the credentials knows they don’t actually teach or prove that you’re good at your craft. Then the cycle perpetuates! Do you think it’s changing at all?

@@nbartistry it’s getting worse! So, I went to NEC (New England Conservatory). Graduated in mid90s- tuition then was $16k a year, and lots of people were on scholarships. It is now full of ridiculously talented and also very rich Asian students who are happy to pay their way for reasons I don’t want to mention here. Let’s take a look at the jobs available: every year, just Boston, pumps out new graduates who want all the jobs, and as I’m a violinist- we have several part time orchestras, one world class Orchestra, the BSO, that takes a miracle to get into- and all these kids want their share of a very thin underpaid pie. It’s miserable. Theater pits only have one violin, maybe a string quartet at most, the rest is covered by keyboard 2 synths- we’ve been long time replaced by synths. And then, there is teaching. National endowment for the arts costs each citizen $.60 per year. Imagine what could happen if we just contributed $60 a year per person. How much more beauty this could bring. But apparently, people can’t easily understand their Venn diagram where you can clearly see where your taxes go. So enjoy your corporate art and canned Muzak, folks. Build your bunkers, go to your local plazas, polish your guпs, while other countries create beauty.
But as far as art techniques- at least we now have talented and kind individuals who are willing to take on a role of teachers online (I can’t and won’t teach violin online as it is a scam- it’s hands only).

I love your work bruv. You’re certainly a master with flowers. I’m doing my 2nd wall mural in a mall in S.C. this weekend. I’ve never spray painted before but I will need to learn how. Any advice?
