Ten years ago, Bardarbunga caught my attention with its massive eruption, and part of the ice sheet/cap melting was quite concerning.
I watched MILA's live cams for weeks or more, making a dozen or more timelapse videos, some are very cool!
I also met some wonderful people, geologists, volcanologists, and more!
    ~
That eruption also led me to Jökulsárlón Glacial tidal lake which yes, I did 2 or 3 timelapse videos of that too. Very awesome place!
Heck, ALL of Iceland is awesome!
    ~~
Thanks for all you do, Gylfi. I also give thanks to another UA-camr, Roman and Nina. (You two have documented some major history!)
    Cheers and, God Bless!
    James

That was, as far as I know, the largest lava eruption in Iceland since the 1783 to 1784 Laki eruption.

@SSArt98 The Laki eruption erupted about 15 cubic kilometers of lava which covered 600 square kilometers. The Holohraun eruption erupted 1.4 cubic kilometers and covered 85 square kilometers. Just so you know, 1 cubic kilometer is equal to 1 billion cubic meters, and 1 square kilometer is 1 million square meters. The Holohraun eruption alone is larger than all the eruptions in Iceland since 2021 combined.

@susannap.8834 Oh hi there, been a long time eh since we last spoke. Yeah, Bardarbunga is a volcano that could be seriously problematic. Both the Holohraun and Laki eruptions came from the same system. I don't want to seem like a "the world is ending" type of person, but this volcano and the eruptions it can produce shouldn't be ignored.
On a side note, I find it cool that some of us still keep in touch aftee we met online since Fagradalsfjall.

The Volcano on my list is still Katla! I have dreamed, really, that she erupts, but it was not that big, at the southwest crater rim. But there was a big water flow with stones and ice and what not. That was pretty scary, because in my dream I was running away but the water was right behind me. And then I saw this big black cloud coming out of the crater. And then I woke up.

Then it was Katla, uuuuh, the ice is melting, she is overdue, too. Now it’s The Bardabunga, again. He and his partner in crime are restless for two years now. I check the tremors every morning. Here's a thought to throw at your vulcanologist friends Gylfi: What if the main source of the pressure in the upper magma storage area is actually the lower chamber? If that's the main source of pressure, that could be forcing lava up and through the upper area directly.

  • @poetmaggie1
    @poetmaggie1 3 дні тому +7

I am confused, Iceland doesn't have a problem with volcanos, it has a problem with people thinking they have a problem with volcanos. Iceland has always had volcanos but not always had people. If people put things in the way of volcanos that is not the fault of the volcanos.

Most of this country (like other countries) built stuff before we knew squat about plate tectonics. Or volcanoes. VOLCANOES spout off in any way and direction the pressure forces. Hæ Gylfi, nice to see you pick up on the topic of "extra" magma coming up, but just a small thing about 3:36 -> it's not just this last eruption which had the phenomenon of "extra" magma coming up, but several of the previous ones before, at least the August one (similar amount of magma came out, and similar prior filling of the magma chamber, as in Nov), maybe the May one (slightly less lava came out but still much more than estimated capacity of the magma chamber, and I guess that despite the somewhat longer duration, most of the magma was erupted in the first few days, so again more magma came out quickly than had been in the shallow reservoir or could have been refilled at the sae rate at which the reservoir is usually filled in between eruptions), and also that intrusion on Nov 10th last year which was estimated to have sent (if I remember correctly) 70 million m^3 into that dyke, even though prior land uplift underneath Svartsengi was much less.

The subsidence around the power plant and the blue lagoon is likely to be that the power plant has withdrawn water from the aquifer faster than rains, seepage from the Blue Lagoon, and inflow from the surrounding areas can replenish it.
There would have been a professional survey of the power plant site that was made prior to the the approval of the project on file somewhere. It would have the elevation data for back then. Also, a really old topo map would get you close. There should be records of how much if any of the surface was removed prior to building the foundation. In the U.S. various state and federal agencies install "bench marks" with the latitude, longitude, and elevation inscribed in them. I am sure that Iceland also installs bench marks. A quick survey from one of those to the power plant would give you the current elevation. The rest is just arithmetic.
Thanks again for you beautiful and informative work.

Thank you for the update. On the subject of what effect the power station might have upon the magma chamber below I can't really imagine a way in which it could possibly make things worse as the power station is continually pulling energy out of the surrounding ground. In fact that might already explain some of the subsidence of the area. As magma/stone cools it contracts, so if the drop in elevation isn't too much, maybe the cooling effect of the power station has dropped the temperature of several hundred meters of rock beneath it and thermal contraction can explain most of it.

Wasn't there a suggestion previously that the magma chamber off the coast of Grindivik could be more than just one? That's what I'm thinking. Maybe those chambers are a bit more illusive and difficult to define even with our ground-penetrating doo-hitchies. Maybe there's a crack pathway from somewhere even deeper or a volume miscalculation caused by .... the volcano nymphs.
Btw, the scenery in this piece has caused me to replay more than a couple times to actually hear what you're saying instead of me saying,
"Oh my gosh, would you look at that !"

I have a bar joke for you: Which came first the chicken or the egg? The rooster.
