@SSArt98 The Laki eruption erupted about 15 cubic kilometers of lava which covered 600 square kilometers. The Holohraun eruption erupted 1.4 cubic kilometers and covered 85 square kilometers. Just so you know, 1 cubic kilometer is equal to 1 billion cubic meters, and 1 square kilometer is 1 million square meters. The Holohraun eruption alone is larger than all the eruptions in Iceland since 2021 combined.

Fabulous as usual, Gylfi! When the Holuhraun eruption was going on, we were staying at a hotel on the south shore of Myvatn, and at night you could see the glow of the eruption, about 75km away.
5:01 to 5:34 :watching the slow trickling of cooled rock, apparently destabilised by the slow, glowing rock flow behind it, quire distracted me - I had to go back to hear the voiceover. Well done.
I had similar thoughts about Grindavik geology. I think it was tectonic fissuring that opened a pathway for the volcanic. I appreciate your artistry along with the info you provide us.
Thank you Gylfi for info magma volume is different to erupted lava volume as it expands as pressure is released when erupting filling with gas bubbles around x2 the volume on average
In other countries the meteorological service just does the weather. In Iceland they give out daily reports on earthquakes, land rises, lava flows and eruptions.
They are quite busy, and they have way better accuracy in the geology department since the weather department is just about to program AI models and they don't even get the currant weather right :)
.... and ice dams in rivers, storm tides, mud flows, snow avalanches. It must be quite fun to be in the warnings department of IMO. My favourite warning however was a weather warning, which said: "... storm, sleet, snow in the mountains, and bad view. Not a good weather for hunting ptarmigans".

The Volcano on my list is still Katla! I have dreamed, really, that she erupts, but it was not that big, at the southwest crater rim. But there was a big water flow with stones and ice and what not. That was pretty scary, because in my dream I was running away but the water was right behind me. And then I saw this big black cloud coming out of the crater. And then I woke up.

Thank you for the update. Never a dull day in Iceland. I guess the power plants that use the high temperature groundwater are always in an active volcanic region and therefor always at risk. It's an interesting problem, no doubt lots of clever Icelandic engineers are busy working on solutions.
Here's a thought to throw at your vulcanologist friends Gylfi: What if the main source of the pressure in the upper magma storage area is actually the lower chamber? If that's the main source of pressure, that could be forcing lava up and through the upper area directly.
I am confused, Iceland doesn't have a problem with volcanos, it has a problem with people thinking they have a problem with volcanos. Iceland has always had volcanos but not always had people. If people put things in the way of volcanos that is not the fault of the volcanos.
Most of this country (like other countries) built stuff before we knew squat about plate tectonics. Or volcanoes. VOLCANOES spout off in any way and direction the pressure forces. The subsidence around the power plant and the blue lagoon is likely to be that the power plant has withdrawn water from the aquifer faster than rains, seepage from the Blue Lagoon, and inflow from the surrounding areas can replenish it.
There would have been a professional survey of the power plant site that was made prior to the the approval of the project on file somewhere. It would have the elevation data for back then. Also, a really old topo map would get you close. There should be records of how much if any of the surface was removed prior to building the foundation. In the U.S. various state and federal agencies install "bench marks" with the latitude, longitude, and elevation inscribed in them. I am sure that Iceland also installs bench marks. A quick survey from one of those to the power plant would give you the current elevation. The rest is just arithmetic.
