X=17 using the distributive property on both sides you 4x+20=6x-14 adding 14 to both sides and subtracting 4x on both sides creates 34=2x dividing by 2 on both sides x=17
@@stevenjohnson1143 DIVIDE BOTH SIDES BY 2 FIRST.
Then it's a problem you can do in your head.
This is especially important when you're doing higher level math.
Always reduce if possible.

There's nothing wrong with pointing out different approaches, but you can't know what someone else's head is going to find easier.
@gavindeane3670 yes..that is the exception for this problem.
However, in General..
Anytime you can reduce the ( scaler)
The better.
And in this case I believe that's how it should have been taught.
Because when you get to diff eq or Le Place..
You're going to need those tricks.

2x-14=20

Got it because I remembered a previous lesson of yours that taught me you can subtract like variables.
First step
Multiply both sides by 1/2.
2(X+5) = 3X -7
Then its distribute
2X + 10 = 3X -7
Combine like terms
17 = X
I got it right.
X=17 4(x+5) = 2(3x-7) 4(17+5) = 2(3x17 - 7) = 4(22) = 2(51-7) 88 = 2(44) = 88

4x +20 = 6x-14
4x+34=6x
34= 2x
X = 2
4(x+5) = 2( 3x-7)
4x + 20 = 6x-14
4x-6x = -14-20
-2x = -34
X = 17

2(3x - 7) = 4(x + 5)
6x - 14 = 4x + 20
2x = 34
x = 17
4X + 20 = 6X - 14
34 = 2X
17 = X
68 + 20 = 88

The first objective is to expand everything
Second is to collect like items (apples and oranges.)
Finally, come to a specific equality for x.
4(x+5)=2(3x-7)
Step1
4x+20=6x-14
Step2
4x-6x=-14-20
-2x=-34
Step3
X= -34/-2
=17
VERIFY:
4(x+5)=2(3x-7)
4(17+5)=?2(3(17)-7)
4(22)=?2(51-7)
88=?2(44)
88=❤88✔️
Wrong.
The first thing to recognize is to multiply both sides by (1/2)
Which yields
2(X+5) = 3x-7
Then distribute
2X + 10 = 3X- 7
Then
2X goes to the right, and the -7 goes to the left.
Yielding
17 = X
@@fredmertz1791What do you mean "wrong"? There's nothing wrong with their method.
It's wrong of them to give the impression that the problem must be solved in the sequence that they've described. But that's what you're doing too and it's equally wrong for you to do it.
Your method and their method are mathematically equivalent and equally valid.
@gavindeane3670 if you like writing with crayons, then use their method..
The Neanderthal method is great for noobs.

@@fredmertz1791 Given that both answers go through the same steps, just in a slightly different order, I'm not sure why you think you get the answer any slower the other way.
Personally I did the distribution first, because I was solving it in my head. It was easier to visualise the result of the multiplication if I did the multiplication on the numbers that were written on the screen in front of me.
But obviously dividing both sides of the equation by 2 first is perfectly correct and valid too.

When you get high enough in math, you learn to reduce or manipulate the terms at every opportunity.
Otherwise it becomes messy.
