    What a fabulous location!! I've just moved from South Oxfordshire to the Isle of Mull, and will soon be starting (okay, commissioning) cladding my own 38x12 static. This is both inspirational and educational!

      Quick question, if I may? And with apologies if it's in one of your videos! My static has very basic capacity for electricity or, rather, the fusebox has and the ring main keeps tripping. How have you got around that? I had a very long but not informative phone conversation with an electrician 🫤

    Hi, just watched parts 1 and 2 and looks like this is going to be a great help as we are in the process of buying a static to live in . We have been off grid In a small caravan for a year so this is our next step. Looks like the van we are going to purchase has only single glazing but we will probably have to change them to double which will probably cost ! Thanks for posting. All the best from Swansea, South Wales :)

      Thanks for the kind words, really gives us a boost to hear we are connecting with folks. Funny you should say that about the music. When we published this video we got a copyright warning as it picked up a couple of sections of music it recognised as Dire Straits tracks. To get over the problem I had to overdub the sound again making all the appropriate noises and repeating all the things I had said as best I could. It was quite the challenge but no one seems to have noticed so I think we did a decent job.

    I enjoyed that, despite only searching for videos giving me tips on sprucing up the INSIDE, of a an older static, with an Intention of buying one in the near future. Laminate in place of an old grubby carpet? Settee and chair in place of caravan seating. New kitchen cupboard doors. Etc...
    Despite that, I stayed until the end. And will probably watch the other ones. In fact, I could be tempted to buy a small parcel of woodland (or the like) and give this type of life a go. Retirement beckons.

      I hope the video has been useful. Part 3 will be along soon as possible, it would have been done by now but my partner has a nasty accident which required surgery and that has slowed us down but I'm back on it now.

    I’ve watched your video and I’m following you way I’m useing 4x2 for stud work and cutting the gutter off flush as have tonnes of 4x2 save me buying 3x2 my question is how come you didn’t leave an air gap and also do you think when you come to move it , it won’t be too heavy ?? Great content btw well done

    • @LadyfieldFarm
      @LadyfieldFarm  2 роки тому

      Hi Tom, nice to hear the video has been of some use to you. Cutting the gutter off sounds like a fine plan, always best to use what you've got eh. As for an air gap I didn't see the need for one and as it stands there is no evidence of this being a problem. The insulation is doing it's job keeping the heat in and there is certainly no sign of any damp, moisture or condensation anywhere. Due to the nature of the wool there is some means for air to pass through and around, so all seems well as is. As for the weight, we have no intention of moving the caravan but I would imagine with care it could be done.
      All the very best with your project, I hope it goes well.

    • @LadyfieldFarm

      I was very fortunate to be able to mill all the timber myself so that didn't cost me anything but nowadays no timber is cheap. The sheets and felt for the roof was around £350 if I remember correctly and the fleeces were also free. So I can't tell you a realistic cost as I didn't have to pay for much of the materials but I would say if you plan to be in a caravan for any length of time it will be worth the investment.

  • @MrMully48

    Great Job. I plan on cladding mine, but only up to gutter height, what would be the best way to fix the frame under the gutter. I have an existing deck at the front so that can be used to fix the 3x2 at the bottom, just wondering how to fix at the top.
    Thanks
    Rob

    • @LadyfieldFarm
      @LadyfieldFarm  3 роки тому +1

      Hello Mr Mully, I would suggest that maybe the best way to fix at the top would be to find the timber uprights within the wall. Their position will be given away on the outside by the presence of screw heads through the metal exterior. If you put a small angle bracket on each of these a couple of inches down from the underside of the gutter then the head of your stud work could be attached to these. Obviously your uprights would be taking the weight of the head so the only job the brackets have to do is to stop the stud frame moving away from the caravan. If you clad each end of the van also then joining each frame to the other at the corners will also stop any of them moving away from the caravan.
      My other thought if you are only cladding up to gutter height to be sure to have a flashing of some sort that will sit under the gutter but over the top of the head of the stud work and the first cladding board. Hope that all makes sense and is of some use. Thanks for watching.

    Hi,can you possibly give an idea of the cost of all the wood you used please.it looks lovely but also very expensive??

    • @LadyfieldFarm
      @LadyfieldFarm  3 роки тому

      Hello, and thanks for watching. I am in a very fortunate position in that I am able to work at a sawmill for a friend and get paid with wood so to be honest I really don't know what the cost would be as I've not had to pay for 90% of the timber. But as I do say in the Part 1 of this video, it's not something to do if you are only staying your caravan for a year or so. We will likely be in ours full time for 4 years so it makes the cost more worthwhile. You are right though, it's not a cheap option.

    What size timber are you using? It looks like 3x2? Can I ask why you didn't go with 2x2s? As you know I'm aiming to do exactly this on my mobile but probably would only use 2x2s please advise?

    • @LadyfieldFarm
      @LadyfieldFarm  2 роки тому

      Hello Lex, a couple of reasons I went with 3x2 really. For one thing it allows room for more insulation than 2x would. Also because all the roof timbers sit on the head of the stud walls and exert a lateral force to push the walls outwards I don't think 2x2 would be man enough for the job. If you could fix 2x2 to the actual caravan walls outside then perhaps they would be strong enough but because of the gutter projecting out an inch at the top that would reduce the head of the stud to just one inch and would offer no strength or fixing for the roof timbers. I hope that helps.

    • @lextrombas
      @lextrombas 2 роки тому

      yes, I gave it more thought. The roof beams will be heavy for sure. After watching this video I realised you have built an independent frame around the mobile. I don't have the freezing conditions you have so I'm going to attach my 2x2s directly onto the inner beams as I aim to take the frame right down to the ground. I will rest the frame on concrete blocks just as my mobile also rests on blocks. An added plus will be creating a huge storage area under the mobile. As I'm busy with floorboards at the moment I will fit a couple of access hatches inside. Unfortunately it's going to still take me a long while as I rely heavily on help as I am disabled. But in another 6 months I should be finished. It's a slow frustrating process for me. But will get there. Thanks for all the information it helps me tremendously.
