Subaru is better in the harsh offroad, especially with the symmetrical AWD. Mazda is better in design, handling feeling & naturally aspirated engines. Honda still has some cars competing with Toyota, Mazda, Subaru. But their overall reliability is falling and their TCO increases due to the planned obsolescence that plagues most cars. Lexus - being the entry luxury brand of Toyota - is more reliable (the innovation is checked usually first with Toyota upper mass-market cars) and its low TCO comes at #3 (Toyota is #1 and Mitsubishi is #2). But nobody has the wide range of reliable AND low TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) cars that Toyota has. Therefore, no, there are yet no brands above Toyota overall. Mazda is the closest and ascending.
