I just wanted to say that I can completely relate to this ‘depression or smth’ that made me quit academia couple of years ago. You are awesome! To be honest, if I worked as an MD in US I’d pay a lot just for some kind of brief hike with you listening to the stuff you know.

I’m retired educator. Now I manage my time by doing ample research before I commit to important tasks and decisions. My wife calls it “procrastination”. I have a totally different perspective. 😂 Thank You Dr Crawford for your very detailed and informative presentations. Best of luck to you in every endeavor.

Dr Crawford, although sadly I don't have enough free time at my disposal to watch your videos as often as I could about a year ago, I greatly value your videos, your manner of presentation, your insights - as in this video - and your person. I am unsure how to express myself best, but there often seems to be an air of melancholy and regret to you, which touches me a lot. It pains me how the academic system treats its workers, and how the world doesn't quite seem to honor and offer a place for a man like you. Often, I myself am unsure what place I want to take in the world, and I feel that your perspective and insights have at times given me an understanding and a feeling of being understood that I do not find elsewhere. I want to wish you all the best and express my respect for you.

That was great man. There is a Maori proverb which translated reads as 'If you turn to face the sun, the shadows fall behind you.' Being the Patreon Professor of Old Norse means you're making a genuine difference to peoples' lives and to the advancement of knowledge in your field of inquiry. Keep at it, but be gentle with yourself eh?

Ironically, your channel fights against my own creeping nihilism and depression. You keep the parts of me alive that are not acknowledged or rewarded in the life I live.
I also keep a task journal and to do list. They are the same in order to enforce productivity. I am stealing some of your ideas though. One of mine: I used to do 10 push-ups, sit ups, and lunges for each entry. I keep my most egregious tasks in a beautiful sparkly dimestore notebook because the dichotomy suits my sense of humor.
Nature fights depression: seek it out or bring it to you. We wish You all the best Dr. Crawford.

I really appreciate all the productivity tips and tricks you shared, but on a personal level, I wanted to say thank you for sharing openly and honestly about your struggle with - and thus far, victory over - alcoholism, without belaboring the point, and staying in solutions. I imagine being this public about it might feel a little scary (or maybe a lot), but I wanted to say I respect your courage for speaking up and sharing your honest experience. You're an inspiration.

I know you’ve said before that you rarely if ever read comments, but I do feel a bit compelled to write and say that I find these sorts of videos to be just valuable if not more so than your old Norse content. As someone that struggles quite a bit with goal setting/achieving, “productivity”, and really just having some sort of direction in general, I genuinely appreciate these more personal/meta videos and feel like I gain some insight into dealing with my self. I’m a really big fan of your (to me) novel “diary” style of accountability rather than the traditional checklist, it seems a lot more rewarding and manageable to me and I’m gonna have to give it a try

First, this was a very insightful and useful sidetrail video. It's not that a person need follow all of your methods exactly, but it is good food for thought and encouragement to develop one's own system of organization and productivity.

It is somewhat all to easy to idolize and lionize our favorite UA-cam content creators. It's very beneficial to be reminded now and then that they are very real human people just like us.

I am not self-employed, so most of my days and weeks are filled with employer level work, but your cyclical system gives me an idea for not getting bogged down in the things I want to do in my non-working hours.
I tend to neglect the things that need done - or everything - because the list of "To-Do" can sometimes be large and overwhelming.
    I'm considering the following categories:
    - Language (just sitting down with either Duolingo or a couple of your old norse lessons)
    - Writing (even if it's just jotting down what is in my brain at the moment)
    - Physical (this needs to be an everyday thing, even if I don't have time to go to the Y and dedicate a whole hour - I've got stuff around the house)
    - Maintenance (includes all the house and home stuff)
These 4 would be good to cycle through when I start thinking "what should I do today? Let's see what's next on the list."
I'm also either on a laptop/computer pretty much all day and have my phone on me most of the time, so I'm not opposed to an electronic option for a planner. However, the possible downside to having the electronic version is that I don't want notifications popping up every 30 mins telling me I'm falling behind the next thing on the list. I think the paper planner is a better option in that case. Lord knows it might also help my penmanship.
I would add an addendum to the "Love" category. Maintenance not only with loved ones, but taking some of that time and doing something good for yourself. If I spent half as much time on the positives about myself as I do with the negatives, I'd be a different person. I'm trying, but the negative nelly in my brain is pretty loud.
BTW, I think the categorization by rune is adorably nerdy and I love it.
ETA: I'm proud of you for not giving up the no drinking streak. Seven and a half years is nothing to sneeze at and I admire your strength and determination.

Seems like a great system. Organisation is a foreign language to me. Columnar agendas are good for a week-at-a-view, but I just write a todo list and copy it from one day/column to the next. It lets me put the day behind me and remind myself of what needs doing.* Staying focused (as I also have a tendency to depression) is the problem. I also use Q card lists for when I'm feeling particularly fragmented. They have Day Start and End routines that help me get back on track.
*I did this for my first years of Uni - the only year I can claim to have been organised. I haven't repeated it since. This is because I'm very ADD, which, left untreated, manifested into BP Type II. Apparently that's how that works. Depression was a part of it too. I urge anyone struggling with depression to seek professional help. Insider tip: it speeds things up to do your own research first.

Thanks for this! I also have a variety of "side hustles." I am older than you, so I understand the idea of not always using technology for keeping track of daily tasks. It has its place, but I prefer to buy student planners or blank journals.
There was a Big Think video with Tiago Forte talking about using a digital journal as a "second brain," and talking about the usefulness of making digital notes, but I prefer paper, myself. There are no distractions or notifications happening in a paper journal, which helps your focus. And you just jot down small bits of useful info and ideas, rather than forget about them.
Also, I would mention Marcus Aurelius, he was only writing for himself, but it's a good template for people to learn from (and Stoicism forms the basis for modern Cognitive Behavioral Therapy). The idea of writing down what works for you, being able to ask yourself what you could do better (to learn from it, not to beat yourself up), what you've done well (so you can repeat that), etc. And accountability.
I have to remind myself to check my email and other accounts. In addition to the spiral notebook planner, I have a big dry erase magnetic calendar on the fridge, I have fun with it, putting colorful post-its on there. If I don't have a system in place, my life descends into chaos because I'll get into one project or task and forget all the others.

The current job--and even life--being more important, however, continue to interrupt such things.

I struggled/struggle with planning, productivity, etc. I found a couple of things that have really worked pretty well for me when I stay on them - the Power Planner developed by Dan Koe (it's a free set of templates and an explanation of how to use them) which requires you to actually think about what you're trying to get done over time but also does not let you set up some monster daily task list. I found it useful. Also useful is the Pomodoro time management system - I only use the timer, though (online version available from Pomodoro). If I work with these things and stick to using the timer, I found I'm productive and don't end up feeling like I've frittered my time away on nothing.

As someone who struggles with procrastination and laziness, I think I'll give this a try. I've noticed in myself that I generally work better when I have multiple things going and I allow myself to move between them, although this becomes detrimental if I switch too much to the point where I can never get into the flow. Maybe the 30 min block was what I need to manage my time in a way where I still have that flexibility to do what I want but also enough structure that I'm not losing my head

I think divination works best when seen as a sort of decision maker, like should i take the left path or the right one, it doesnt tell your future but it can help you realise what you really want inside. Maybe we even unknowlingly influence the answer, through whatever way we seek it. Thats my thoughts to this. Interpreting signs is somewhat different, not the action is influenced, but rather the signs chosen. Might be a bit different if you believe in destiny and fate, then if you know what happens will happen, no matter what you do, why worry about anything😅

Personally, I agree with and love just about everything you do. However, I feel that "Love" shouldn't be a task or on a "to do" list, especially, not at the bottom of your priorities...damn it. Because, Love should always come before breakfast and after dinner, in my eyes.

Around the time I started watching your videos, I came across your article in the Journal of English and Germanic Philology. Though I'm more interested in Romance rather than in Norse, I found the paper very interesting, especially since one of my early scholarly interests was the organization of vocabulary from a structural perspective (á la Pottier, Coseriu, etc.). Since you seem to have some reservations regarding your career as a UA-camr, may I ask if you plan to ever go back to academia? I'd love to be able to read more about your research.

Thank you for your precious advises, some of which I will try tomorrow! Is it that physical "depression or something" again? Anyhow, I hope the last task will become the first one (again?)!

You should try acting. You would do a great captain in a movie like “Saving Private Ryan”

Enjoyed this, and not sure if it's just me, but the audio on this video was super low. Maybe turn up your mic a bit? thanks

Have you ever considered writing short fiction? Having heard your Cowboy Havamal, I thought you could take Norse sagas, or events in them, move them in time and place to the late 19th century American west, and retell them. The biggest challenge might be to properly convey Norse social and cultural concepts and motivations.

If you want something else to do, lol, voice acting would be fun.

Good tips, thank you for sharing. I used a weekly planner from Leuchtturm1917 for several years. Now I use the Supernote e-ink device as a consolidated notebook and planner.
